Big Weekend for Wild Animals

Today’s post comes from Bart, the bear who found a smart phone in the woods. His message has been translated from its original language, Ursus Textish.

Yo. Bart here.

Yes, I can stream videos, but it does not make me happy.

This is it – a big weekend for us in the woods. The tourists and vacationers are getting their last licks in before they have to go back to school or get serious about their work. Four-wheelers are roaring through the forest, Jet skis are buzzing across the lake, and half-eaten bags of Doritos are everywhere.

It’s almost like there is some primal frenzy that takes hold of your species, to play and thrash about wildly in the final hours of your imagined freedom, before everything around you changes.

I would sympathize, but starting today I’ve got my own problems to think about. Things will get quiet pretty fast after this.

Before long the cycle starts all over again. If I’m lucky.

But this is not a complaint. I can take care of myself. Or at least I can take cover. I know that other animals have it much worse than I do. Ferrets, for example, and parakeets. Circus bears. And house cats.

I see that there was just a gathering down in Minneapolis where thousands sat on a hillside and watched images of house cats being tormented by vacuums and metronomes and the bleak reality of their own confinement. And this was considered entertainment for the people! They voted on which episode of feline exploitation they enjoyed the most.

That’s sick.

The winning entry is extra sad, but I hear that people laughed. Out loud.

If you search for “bears” on You Tube, what you get is even bleaker. Mostly it involves dumpsters, trampolines, salmon and hairy men.

Very discouraging.

It makes me glad I’m still free, even though I’m spending far too much time playing with this phone. When will the battery run out? I’m afraid to put it down.

I guess maybe I have already been trapped, and simply don’t know it.

Your Buddy,
Bart

I don’t know if this is a tongue-in-cheek entry by Bart or not. He has a pretty big tongue and not that much cheek, so I’m guessing the stress of the Labor Day weekend is getting to him. But if the unfortunate tale of Henri gives some fresh perspective to a bear in the woods, what’s the harm in that?

How will you spend the big weekend?

  1. Good morning. No big plans for the holiday weekend. We might get our bikes out for the first time this summer and go for a ride on a bike trail. On Monday we will go to my daughter’s house in The Cities for a noon dinner. Both of my daughters and their families will be there. We might go out to eat in the evening in The Cities before returning home. The rest of the weekend will include some work around the house and what ever we can come up with to entertain ourselves at home.

My daughter who has a job at the Walker will probably have some stories about the cat video festival. We have already heard that some people called to find out if the could bring their cat to the festival and some even asked if they could bring their dogs. I believe the answer to these questions was that they should not bring their pets. My daughter helps with events and I’m sure the Walker staff, including my daughter, didn’t want to deal with people’s pets and have enough trouble dealing with the people without their pets.

    1. I was wrong about pet cats and dogs not being allowed at the cat video festival. It was outside and some people did bring their cats and some also brought dogs.

      1. Oh how I wish that I’d known about this event!!! I’ve been owned by over 15 cats in the last twenty years. I’ll alert you to perhaps the funniest cat video I’ve ever seen on You Tube – it’s titled “Yawning Cats” and shows multiple different cats yawning with human dubbing. Maybe it’s just my funny bone, but……….

  2. I have advantages over most of you, my dear baboons. Arthritis and poverty have simplified my life. The list of things I would like to do has been shortened by removing the items I physically can’t do. What is left has been shortened again by all those things I can’t afford to do. But I can still read books, enjoy music and watch movies. Maybe there will be a phone call to Portland. I’ll listen to Prairie Home Companion tonight.

And yet there is something else, something remarkable. I have been talking to a special friend for many years, hoping she might find the courage to make an extremely difficult decision. She stunned me yesterday by taking that step.

My computer makes two magic sounds: a zinging sound when I get an email and a funny “buloop!” when a Skype message comes in. I’ll be carefully monitoring the computer this weekend. The next “zing” or “buloop” might mean my friend needs to talk, and I’ll want to be here.

  3. Right now, I am waiting for the last of the morning mosquitoes to go to bed so that I can water the vegetable garden in the backyard and whatever is managing to survive in the front yard. After that, I will throw together an acorn squash bread—the ingredients are lined up on the counter. While that is baking in the basement stove, too hot for the kitchen stove, I will get ready to meet a young woman for lunch. Lunch is a term we use loosely; it will probably start with a walk to the park with a thermos of coffee and warm squash bread for a late breakfast. She is just returning from a trip to Addis Ababa where she visited her mom after not having seen her for over 6 years. I have mentored her for all of that time. I am so excited to see the pictures and hear all of the details while laughing and crying. She returned this week, 2 days late for her clinicals and classes so I tried to tell her to wait to see me until after she got settled and caught up but we couldn’t wait and she has Monday for homework. After the park, we will probably go out for a real lunch and then to some “adventure” quaking bog? Eloise Butler? or people watching? I won’t be home until we watch the moonrise somewhere. Sunday something will happen and Monday something else will happen, not sure yet.

I’m sure the morning mosquitoes are sleeping by now. It takes me so long to write. Dale, I marvel at how do you it, spot on every time.

However, have I joined ranks? I enjoyed the “Henri 2: Paw de Deux,” with English subtitles, and am actually sending the link to others.

I have done some cutting back in the fall on occasion, if the weather does one of those whiplash things where it gets really warm after it gets cold. In a typical year, though, I wait till spring.

We plan to go dancing at Tapestry – there’s a mix of English Contra (then and now), some Irish, Scottish, and Square dancing. (8:00 tonight). Then at some point I have a George Burns and Gracie Allen DVD to show to my mom – try out the DVD part of her new TV. Other than that it’s just catch up on yard work and some writing. Maybe we’ll get out for a bike or a kayak trip.

        1. It’s a little more like a soup than a liquidy salsa, no tomato or V-8 juice is added. You start with two separate batches of tomatoes, etc. (including a couple of hot peppers). One batch it chopped pretty roughly, the other 1/4 inch dice. You end up pureeing the chopped portion and adding the diced portion after you pureed the first batch. I like both the Mexican and the Spanish version, but usually make the Mexican because it’s not as labor intensive. On a day like today, when I had ample time on my hands to wait for the juices to drain from the salted tomato mixture in which to soak the good ciabatta I happened to have on hand from St. Agnes’ monthly sale this morning, the Andalusian version called out to me.

Turned out to be a pretty satisfying day. Washed and line-dried two loads of laundry, made the gazpacho, and basked in the anti-gravity chair while clothes were drying and husband was busy painting the trim on our house. Husband going to the Fair tomorrow with our neighbors, so I’ll probably be going to the Alexis Bailly Vineyard by myself in the afternoon to see my friend’s performance. Also, as of this morning, I’m on chicken sitting duty till Monday. Life is good!

        1. It’s been so long since I’ve posted that WP is back to only letting me reply to a post rather than start my own thread. Not problem though since I was catching up on this week’s blog posts and saw that BiR had asked about me. It has been a busy summer but more importantly, I’ve had to put myself on a Baboon-free regimen at work. I can’t seem to control the need for constant refreshes to keep up once I’ve peeked; it’s similar to not being able to eat just one M&M. So, for the sake of my continued productivity for the 40 months I have left to work (no, I’m not counting, what would make you think that?) I remain in chronic evening and weekend lurkitude. We hosted our two year old grandgirl overnight. I collected her at the fair on the way home from work yesterday and her parents and big brothers will come this afternoon for tubing behind the pontoon, supper and s’mores. Husband has been sick as a man since contracting sudden-onset crud on Wednesday night. Hope it’s not contagious. The course of his crud will determine the activities of the rest of the weekend.

Hans is new to this, so it’s very exciting that his photo was included and recognized, he had no idea when he entered it, that some people have entered their work for years and not gotten in. Humbling, for sure, but also challenging.

  8. Instead of working myself to exhaustion all weekend, I plan to drive my daughter to Fargo on Sunday so she and best friend can spend some time together. The girls haven’t seen one another in person for TWO WEEKS since best friend started at NDSU. Best friend’s roommate will be gone for the weekend, so the girls can hang out in the dorm and have yet another sleepover. They Skype and text and talk an the phone daily, and are so excited they get to see one another. I find it interesting and healthy that daughter has decided she doesn’t want to attend NDSU next year, but wants to go somewhere in Minnesota that is within 4-5 hours of NDSU. (Maybe in future summers I will get to attend the State Fair!) I get to visit my son and daughter-in-law Sunday and Monday and do as I wish. Husband has manfully chosen to stay home and do paperwork and take care of the garden and animals. Today we drive to Bismarck just to mess around and go to Barnes and Noble.

  9. Making pickles this morning — first a trip to Midtown Market for cukes and skinny green beans and dill. Since we gave up our plot at Dowling Gardens, we don’t grow very much of our own produce because our lot is small and shady, but it’s also good to support local farmers for whom it is their livelihood. It’s all green, it’s all a cycle and it’s all yummy. Dilled green beans and Mrs. Walburga’s sweet pickles because the best pickles have to be named after someone’s grandma, don’tcha know? The kitchen smells like garlic and dill, the windows are all open and there’s nice little breeze. Cat can’t make up her mind which windowsill to lounge on. So many choices, but she’s got all the time in the world.

Oh, and there’s the lemon verbena that’s drying in the dehydrator on the dryer in the basement. Lemon verbena is so much more fragrant and intense than lemon balm. It’s good for a cuppa tea, but it’s fabulous when it’s crumbled and put in Mrs. Nelson’s sugar cookies!

All this talk of apple dumplings and breakfast bread is making me hungry so I think I’ll make a tomato sandwich. And maybe snooze in the garden and read a bit. So I guess it’s a combination of Labor day and Lounging day for us.

      1. Oooh, can I have that recipe, Edith? Please send it to my email. When you have a minute, that is. I haven’t been back to see your garden all summer, but it sounds like it was a bountiful season in the back yard. Are you making any jelly or jam this year? With all those berries . . .

        1. Well…do you have lime basil? I gave one of the cookies to someone the other day and she told me I should enter it in some contest (she said the taste and texture was great, the mouthfeel was excellent, and the finish was memorable…and the lime basil made it unique). So I might keep the recipe a secret for now while I decide if I will really enter a contest with it or not.

How about I bring some to the next book club meeting?

          Like

        2. Bring some to a gathering, for sure, Edith! No I don’t have the lime basil (yet), but thought I’d check it out at Mother Earth Gardens — it’s probably too late in the season now anyway. I thought I might try my regular basil combined with lemon verbena which has an intense flavour. Not quite the same, but …

You should try entering a food contest for the fun of it! You and Beth Ann might be the beginnings of a baboon food dynasty. Specializing in desserts.

  10. I need to get my yard in order. It’s a jungle out there. Edging for the garden beds. Weeding. Thinning. Pulling out all the invasive plants that are messing up the various garden beds. I like the cottage garden look, but this is ridiculous. So I’m going to start by taking out the compost to the compost bin and then taking a good look around. If it’s all too much, maybe I will go to the library and pick up my book on hold and call it a day.

If it rains, I have a thousand and one organizing projects to do…unfortunately, when I get overwhelmed, I just shut down and don’t do anything. Anybody want to hold me accountable?

Today mostly regular weekend stuff – the laundry is on the line, the farm books are up to date, husband is raking hay (baling later), grocery shopping for the first real week of school, etc… Tomorrow, visiting daughter and son-in-law after church, possibly going to their local church festival. Monday, I will be spending long enough at school to make sure my room is ready for the first day on Tuesday. Long story why I’m not done already, involving construction in the building and not letting us in until after workshops started (but it looks great!) I am so happy it is a three day weekend, so I still get some weekend stuff in!

For details on where and when they perform, here’s a link: http://www.mixedprecipitation.org/ Like the Rock Bend festival, it’s free! Today’s performance is in a community garden on Maryland Ave @ 4 P.M., and tomorrow’s performance is at the Alexis Bailey Vineyard in Hastings. I’ve been trying to get the house in a little better shape but I’m not having much success. I have too, too much basil and it’s all flowering, so I need to get to that. I have just enough tomatoes for a yummy sauce, so I’ll do that too. I think I’ll use a chemical to clean the lower deck and try to get it stained this weekend. Tomorrow afternoon we’ll go shopping for stuff that we need backstage for Rock Bend, and Monday I’ll cut the hay (mow the lawn). I’m on vacation now for Rock Bend, so this week I’ll be baking and preparing food for backstage. I don’t have to do as much of that this year because some strong, energetic young men have stepped up and are going to take care of much of it – yay! Tuesday through Friday we’ll be setting up stages and tents in the park. I’ll be there for at least three of those four nights. It’s a busy time of year.

Here are a few of my responses to the last few days discussions:
My condolences to Ben on the loss of his dog. I’m sure she was a good girl and she’ll be greatly missed.

It’s good to hear from Clyde, even though the news isn’t good. I’m sending you hope and strength, Clyde, that your family will pull through this tough time.

Good luck to Anna and Edith. I hope you both get the job that best suits you.

Cole Younger fans: I sing a song that Mary McCaslin did – I’m not sure if she wrote it or not – called Cole Younger. It’s a great song and tells the story well.

I worked at the Fair all day on Thursday. I went out of my way to get a sample of BA’s MsD ice cream. They gave it to me in a little paper dixie cup with no spoon. I walked back to the DNR building licking my dixie cup – it was delightful!

It’s interesting to hear that there is sugar in space. Does that mean there are bees? Sugar cane? Beets?

Gosh, that must be enough from me for one day!

After reading through last night’s comments about the “Jill Stein quiz”, my cynical side wondered if maybe it was a hoax and no matter what you said, you’d end up with Jill Stein. So I went back and took it again, choosing the exact opposite of what I did yesterday. 19. I’m experiencing one of those completely unscripted, spontaneous week ends that seem to fill in the hours with meaningful interactions. Starting with the most touching breakthrough with a client – this alone would fill my heart for days. Then, a call from my daughter telling me that my ex-husband had a brain bleed (I can’t spell the correct word) and is in a coma. Many thoughts and feelings are flowing from this. He’s only 61 and nearly died two years ago from a 7″ tear in his aorta, followed by two heart stoppages. Then, my neighbor on the north engaged me in a
conversation about her sister’s esophageal cancer prognosis. An hour later, I found myself wandering over to the neighbor’s home to my south, where I enjoyed the first substantive conversation in a decade. I took the opportunity to acknowledge that we were “horrible neighbors” when we first moved out here and how much I regret the anguish we caused them as well as all the time lost to be friendly (if not friends). In a bit, a close friend is coming with her black-coated retriever to hang out by the shore and share the pain of finding out that her identical twin is
    turning “evil” toward her.

None of these events were planned (except for one client session); all of them are precious opportunities to be human and present to others. I am so blessed.

Son#2 and I went to the Fair. I got very tired and my feet hurt terribly so I took every opportunity to sit down that became available. I think I’m in the middle of my second bout of shingles (no real rash so it’s hard to be sure) but it makes my leg stiff and painful. We saw the important stuff and did some reasonable eating (by Fair standards).
In the Ag-Hort building, I saw the tail end of a presentation on straw bale gardening and thought of VS.
I wore my Vote No (Don’t Limit the Freedom to Marry) t-shirt. I saw a number of similar t-shirts and fans and only one Vote Yes t-shirt. I heard a few people say the word “Yes” as I passed by but I don’t know if they were commenting on how THEY would vote or if I was hearing bits of conversations that had nothing to do with the issue.

I was planning to try to attend the same dance as BiR (with our mutual friend, the OTHER Robin N calling) but I think I’m too wiped.
A potluck barbecue tomorrow and a few hours of work on Monday (our European division doesn’t know from Labor Day so someone has to support them).
    Happy Labor Day, all.

I wore my Vote No t-shirt last weekend at the fair and saw several others also wearing similar shirts (including one whole family – including the kids – we all grinned and commented on the “nice shirts” – also a serious biker dude who gave me a thumbs up and I returned in kind). Saw a couple of Vote Yes shirts – one owner of a Yes shirt scowled at me, but not 10 feet behind him was another, friendly, Vote No shirt wearer. Phew. And at the Kemps booth I saw a couple Yes shirts – once they were out of earshot the Kemps person said that she liked my shirt better and thought that the constitution was no place for discrimination (sing it sister!) and really hoped it didn’t pass – then she wanted to know if she could get a “No” shirt at the fair (why indeed you can…).

      1. Nope… great way to not have to lug milk from the grocery store. Turns out it also saves me money. I’ve never been good at running in and just picking up milk, so not having this on my agenda keeps me from all those extra purchases I used to make!
