I know a lot of Babooners probably shop Online, which has to make things easier during this season. Husband and I are still going to the Bricks and Mortar places for most of our purchases. HOWEVER, we have managed to get on catalog mailing lists galore – we probably bought something through a catalog in 1992 that sold our info to another catalog… and now I’m getting Christmas merchandise catalogs to the tune of three a day.

I have here in front of me: LL Bean, Catalog Favorites, Potpourri, Whatever Works, Harriet Carter, Miles Kimball, Bits and Pieces, Collections Etc., Walter Drake, Dream Products, FeelGood Store, and the Vermont Country Store.

And that’s within just the last few weeks.

I have to admit I like looking at some of them, especially if I haven’t seen one in a while. I particularly enjoy the funny t-shirts, some of which I cut out and put in people’s Christmas cards with the caption – “If I were buying you a gift, here’s what it would be.” Some that have made me laugh out loud this year are:

Plus these hits:  

    • It’s not hoarding if it’s only books 
    • You cannot be old and wise if you were never young and crazy
    • I’d grow my own food if I could only find bacon seeds
    • Families are like fudge, mostly sweet with a few nuts!
    • A little gray hair is a small price to pay for all this wisdom!
    • What is this word “NO” you speak of? 
    • You are about to exceed the limits of my medication
    • Gardening is cheaper than therapy, AND you get tomatoes

And my personal favorite:

  • I may be old, but I got to see all the cool bands

But even though I often dog-ear some pages and save the catalogs for a while, I won’t order anything, and I wish I could think of a way to stop them from sending me all this paper.

  1. I believe this one was in tpt catalogs at one time:

    Baroque-when you’re out of Monet.

    Catalog-wise we seem to have eliminated most. Except tor the deluge from Viking River Cruises which are great thick things.

    These are addressed to a woman who as far as I know has never lived in this house (I know those names from our late, great neighbor).

    We have been in this house for 16 years. I’ve tried sending them back eith a “return to sender-remove from mailing list” sticker (mostly to prove the pointlessness of that activity to a team lead-failure on both counts).

    It now occurs to me to Google up this woman. Because I can.

    Yeh, to those catalogues–if you find out how to stop them, let me know.

    Meanwhile, I have two:

    My very old ORIGINAL Powdermilk Biscuit T-shirt.
    My husband’s t-shirt, now discarded, said

    “They took casual Friday too far…”

    And a dumpy guy in a ballet tutu is walking down the hallway.

    1. That reminds me, Linda, of the most famous quote by a St Paul mayor, Linda. Mayor James Scheibel was accused of being indecisive. He replied: “I’m not indecisive.” Then, turning to an aide, he added: “I’m not indecisive, am I?”

  5. The only t-shirt I loved wearing was the original Powdermilk Biscuit shirt. The only t-shirt I really loved was one I made for my daughter when her first book was published. Using the attractive cover of “We Are Wolves,” I made a custom shirt for her.

    1. When I was a very young married person, for our first holiday in Minneapolis we were beyond broke. But big fans of Prairie Home Companion, so I did a PHC Christmas. Got a Powdermilk t-shirt from Hello MInnesota (I was working there so got a discount) as well as an album by Butch Thompson. Then I found a cat book at a used book sale and made a Bertha’s Kitty Boutique cover for it. Then I painted a box of triscuits blue and hand drew the Powdermilk Biscuit logo onto it. I think I did a couple of other things, but can’t remember. It was a big hit and kinda started me down my “hand made for the holidays” path.

  6. I used to have one that said “Runs with scissors”. Now my favorite is “Hell is empty and all the devils are here” which I got at the Stratford Festival when we saw The Tempest. Most people out here don’t know where the quote is from and think I am a very evangelical Christian because of it and want to know what i mean by it. They sure are surprized when i tell them it is by Shakespeare.

  7. I’ve had a lot of good ones over the years – Mental Floss has a lot of funny ones. But when I was a freshman in college, I bought a t-shirt a lot like this:

    My father really really hated this t-shirt, which of course led me to wear it more often than I probably would have. But just like his stance on reading censorship, he couldn’t bring himself to forbid me to wear it.

  9. I was given a t-shirt to wear as a volunteer helping with the march for climate justice held in S.Paul last summer. Several people asked me if they could get one of those t-shirts which featured a dramatic and attractive logo. I had to tell them that they were only being given out to people who had signed up as volunteers. A couple of people wanted me to sell them or give them my t-shirt. There were some of these t-shirts left over at the end of the march which are no longer available because it seems that they were stolen.

  11. My favorite t-shirt is a very old, navy blue t-shirt that I wear for gardening. I like it because it doesn’t matter how dirty it gets or what gets spilled on it. The only thing bad about it is that it will probably fall apart next gardening season. It’s barely hanging together now.

    BiR, it sounds like you have quite a bit of fun with your catalogs, but if you ever decide you want to stop getting some of them, go to catalogchoice.com and fill out a simple form of the ones you want to stop. It will take a couple months for it to stop, but it works.

  14. I had a Maynard Ferguson T-shirt with his logo on it from about 1986 or so.
    I’ve been thinking about it recently as I follow a Facebook page of Maynard and whenever I watch a video I get all nostalgic about him and the three times I saw him perform.
    And then I think about the T-shirt…
