It’s that time of year again; Daylight Savings Time ends tomorrow and we all (well most of us anyway) in the U.S. get to fall back an hour.
Apparently in all the years that we’ve had DST (starting during World War I and then reinstituted during World War II), no one has been able to do a definite study that proves one way or the other that DST saves energy. It’s a bit of a pain; way too many clocks if you count all the electronics and the clock on the stove is very finicky. Last spring it took me almost 5 minutes to get it changed.
There is one big benefit of DST at our house; we use it as a reminder to change the batteries in our smoke detectors and our carbon monoxide detector. Because of this we know that the batteries are always in good shape.

I was sure at first that you were talking about Marvel’s Avengers, but then you mentioned Mrs. Peel. I loved that series. Do you have The Avengers on DVD? I look for them every now and then on Netflix but can never find them.

In an effort to continue the destruction of the Obama legacy, President Trump has announced a new DST, Daylight Savings Time, plan. The DJT time change will take effect tomorrow at 2AM Eastern Time. “Fall Back TWO hours not a measly Obama ONE hour.” declared Donald “Time Lord” Trump. “All Americans will benefit from an extra, extra hour of something or other. Maybe tweets. Golf. Crooked Hillary investigations. It’s up to you people.” There was no discussion of how Donald John Trump Time will Spring Forward next year and the potential chaos that might cause.

Great. Now instead of getting dark at 4:30 or 5:00 on the short days of winter, it will get dark at 2:30 or 3:00. Thanks, Trump.

Chaos being one of his principal tools of distraction, I foresee that jumping the clock forward or backward an hour or two or three at whim will prove to be irresistible to him and by a year from now, nobody will know for sure what time it is.

I will work on shooting some still life photos so I can get Bill’s lights back to him next week. Or something else. I have a long list of stuff to do next week, I can get started on some of that. Or maybe I will sleep an extra hour.

I try to stay conceptually on the old schedule till after election day. I have to be at the polling place at 6:00. It’s easier if I believe it to be 7:00.

We’ve had several power outages over the last couple of days, so there isn’t a clock in this house that shows the correct time, or even the same time. The clock that I generally rely on to orient myself as to what time it is is the clock on the stove. Since I can no longer set it, and it is 50 minutes behind the actual current time, as of tomorrow it will show the almost correct time. Close enough for a retiree. 🙂

Because my animals don’t have clocks…other than the sun…I continue their/my usual feeding schedule for at least a week…based on sunlight hours…and sleep hours. Easier to do now that I don’t have to be anywhere “on time.”

My animals do have clocks. Or at least my English setters had an uncanny sense of time. I used to walk the neighborhood with my pal Spook when All Things Considered came on at 4 PM. Spook would show up to make eye contact with me each afternoon at exactly 4 PM, never more than a minute or two late. He didn’t know about DST and how it goes away, but after a day or two with the new clock setting he would make his appearance exactly on time again.

There is a passage in Eric Knight’s book Lassie Come Home that describes the urgency of the dog’s internal clock, which compels her to go to the boy’s school every day to escort him home. She’s driven to keep that appointment no matter what it takes.

I am making lefse. Husband tilled the garden this morning, despite the 2 inches of snow on tbe ground. I turned the clocks back this morning, so today will seem like the longest day ever.

Is it something in the air or what? Last week our stove went on the fritz, two days later my friend Helen’s clothes dryer quit, and this afternoon our Filter Queen vacuum cleaner caught on fire. It’s not a good time for appliances in my neck of the woods.
