The news is in. DNA scientists have tested the Yeti “relics” – samples that believers have kept over the centuries. All turned out to be some type of bear DNA (and one dog). So I’m thinking that Yetis are busted.

Sticking my head in to let you all know I am reading along, but can’t otherwise comment for a number of reasons.
My favorite mythical creature is the moderate Republican of my youth. Maybe they were always mythical, maybe they went extinct, but they were glorious in a stuffy, upright sort of way.

I’ll have to say Hobbits. In fact, when they figure out beaming, maybe they can also figure out a way for us to be transported to fictional or mythical places like the Shire, which I would dearly love to visit.

There are the mythical Kindred Lights, lights that spring up near the small town of Kindred, ND at times. I suppose they aren’t creatures, but who knows. I think tomtens are my favorite mythical creatures.
By the way, thanks to VS for all her writing this month. I should have helped her out more than I did. Think other baboons can get their pencils sharpened and contribute a bit more?

I have been thinking about this. Right now it is more than I can do, and it is discouraging when I work on a piece and there is little response. I am wondering if we might want to reduce the number of posts per week and continue to gab away during the week.
I would like to contribute more, but my life just does not allow it right now.

I forgot to add that the feeling the pressure to contribute is unpleasant enough that I have been considered simply not participating at all anymore which I think is a shame. However, I do think some people have dropped off for this reason.

Oh dear, I didn’t want to guilt people. We can only do just so much. I think that the 50 words or less option is a goid one. Also, dont feel pressure to provide photos. That is easily taken care of by me and VS.

Well, I don’t know about tomten. The Swedish and Norwegian versions may be myths, but I know for a fact that the Danish version, nissen, is real. I almost saw him once.

This is Sherrilee on her Soap Box. As someone who’s been writing a lot recently I have been thinking about this. I don’t want anyone to feel pressure to write stuff. However that being said if other people don’t write stuff then you have to listen to me and Renee a lot more. I assume that nobody wants to listen to me that much. I’ve also thought about whether we have fewer blogs each week and that’s what worries me. I know other blogs that I follow that don’t post every day- I don’t check it everyday. And then I don’t check it until a week later. Or longer.
I’m thinking maybe we’re putting too much pressure on ourselves to work hard on a piece and make it grammatically perfect and wonderful when really we just need to engage each other. That’s why I like the 50 words every now and then. Really we’re more about the community than the blog piece and I’m afraid if we start skipping days and don’t do our daily blog that we will lose touch with our community.

And. I know it’s hard when we have a slow day not to take it personally, but I don’t think we should. We all have busy lives. We have days when we’re out of town, when we have company, when we’re not feeling well, when we just have too much on our plates and we just don’t have anything to say.

I think an option is to post regularly on a given day or days, and not just randomly. I probably would be on most days just to chat. I find weekends are times when I am not usually interested in chatting or posting much.

I agree about weekends. That’s why we moved to the post one Saturday morning and then don’t post another again until Monday, since most of us are out and about quite a bit on the weekends.

I’ve thought that a blog every other day would be OK because we tend to wander off topic anyway. But your point about not checking in regularly and thus leading to the slippery slope is valid.
I don’t mind reading about the random thoughts of you two.
Heck, I have lots of random questions in my head any given day. I could just write them out and send a list. We could all do that.

I’ve thought for a long time that a schedule of 6x week is difficult to keep up, month after month, year after year.
I don’t know of any other blogs that post new posts as frequently as the Trail does. I think it’s hard on the authors and administrators to keep up such a schedule. Also, I’ve often wanted to join in a certain conversation – but due to lack of time or slow thought processes wasn’t able to do so on the day, and by the next day it’s too late.
We found that when Dale wasn’t able to post every day that a post every couple days worked fine, but if the gap went up to 4 or 5 days or a week, people started wondering if something was wrong. I think that if we (or Renee + VS) decide that – as an example – new posts will be posted on Monday-Wednesdays-Fridays and no other days that we would find we could adjust. The conversation can just be continued onto the next day(s), giving those who are busy or not as fast thinkers as the rest of you a chance to contribute. All of us are smart enough that we can adjust to not having something new every single day except Sunday. And we go off topic enough that we usually don’t run out of things to say even if we’ve exhausted the question of the day.
Just my opinion.

One problem with our rather limited set of participants is that we know each other too well and that makes coming up with fresh prompt questions a challenge. Speaking for myself, I tend not to participate when my answer to the question would be a rehash of answers I’ve given previously. I don’t have a solution to propose- it’s just an observation.

I agree, Bill. I was going to suggest that low participation, while discouraging, may simply be a sign that we’ve pretty much exhausted that topic. Some days are just more inspiring than others. While I have contemplated dropping out several times, it has had more to do with what was going on in my mind at the time, as opposed to what the topic on the blog was that day. Again, no solution to our problem, merely an observation.

Well, I for one, will keep writing and posting as we have been. It is fun. I attribute everything happening right now in all spheres to the current political climate. Things will get better! I have been writing down ideas as they come to me, so I have a good start for December.

My favorite mythical creature is the gryphon. Lewis Carroll featured one, and there was a children’s book about a gryphon in the 60’s or so. Can’t remember the title or who wrote it, but I remember the pictures.

I like the thoughtful discussion that’s shown up today about the blog. I can, as usual, see all sides of the question(s), but come away thinking it’s not bad to plug away at every weekday, once on weekend. I’ve also thought at times that every other day would be just fine, but I know myself, and if it wasn’t there every day, I’d start to forget to check in when it IS there…

And we can remember they don’t have to be literary masterpieces – sometimes the 50 (or less!) word ones get tons of comments – it’s pretty unpredictable at this point.

But my point is that with an every-other-day blog post, we can just keep the conversation going for one more day. So you could check in every day and see what others have said. For me, it’s often not so much about a new question but just reading what others have said and responding to them. I see it as a conversation the original question gets us started but then we can just carry on by ourselves for a bit (from previous experience, every other day seems about the right amount of space between blog posts).
Sorry for beating a dead horse here and I realize that my opinion is not popular so I’ll quit here and try to not say any more about it.
