Reading Gems

Every now and then when I’m at the library, I find bookmarks made by kids. In addition to the fact that I always needs a bookmark, these creations are delightful.  Markers, stickers, ribbons, misspelled words – I love them and usually take one home with me.

One that I picked up last week has a quote on it. “No thief, however skillful, can rob one of knowledge, and that is why knowledge is the best and safest treasure.”  L. Frank Baum

I started to think that there are quite a few quotes that would be good for bookmarks. Here are a couple more that I like:

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.”― George R.R. Martin, A Dance with Dragons

“Never trust anyone who has not brought a book with them.”―Lemony Snicket, Horseradish

“You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.”  ― C.S. Lewis

Do you have a favorite quote about reading?

  1. My daughter gave me a book for Christmas that has turned out to be a delight. Prairie Fires is a superb biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder. I hadn’t bought the book because I’m not a huge fan of the “Little House on the Prairie” books, though I read and enjoyed them. Caroline Fraser’s biography is far deeper and rich than I expected and is a thoughtful history of life in the middle of the continent from the Civil War to the 1970s. I am enjoying every line of it.

    1. Isn’t that an older book? I think I read that or one like it years ago and was surprised that her life was so difficult.

    2. Thanks for the review, Steve. I have always loved Laura, but reading the books an adult in the 21st century was a very different experience than reading them as a child in the 1970s.

  2. Be as careful of the books you read as of the company you keep, for your habits and character will be as much influenced by the former as by the latter.

  3. And this one is for tim: “You get a little moody sometimes but I think that’s because you like to read. People that like to read are always a little fucked up.”

  4. “I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.” ― Jorge Luis Borges

To me, this is a bit limited, but I’d agree with the idea that Paradise should at least have a good one.

Another quote about books that makes me smile is this one: “Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly.” ― Francis Bacon

It makes me smile because my dog, Charlie, literally devoured a book when he was a puppy. He thoroughly chewed and digested some of it as well. I wasn’t a happy camper, as it was a rare Danish library book that I had to pay to replace.

  5. OT – It seems I may have had my last loaf of Hungarian raisin rye from St. Agnes Baking. They’re ceasing distribution at the end of this week. Reports say it is due to a threat of investigation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

    1. Screw the bread – delicious as it is. This is just such a travesty, and happening all over this nation. I am, as you all know, not a citizen, and I no longer feel safe traveling outside of the US. A friend recently invited me to a trip to Cuba for Christmas but unless Cuba is a place where I’d feel content to spend the rest of my life (and it isn’t) that’s not a safe place for me to travel. I feel trapped here. I have such strong feelings about this, and all of the other travesties that I feel helpless to fix, that I’m near despair. How has this nation suddenly become such a hateful, inhospitable place?

      1. it is my true bnelief that it will take such a travestyu to turn this nation around. we have been surrounded by right wing bigots and radicals who went undetected and whose cancer went silently unnoticed even with all the damage the silent majority as they called themselves was doing

i think the democrats are incapable of figuring out how to unseat the gop on their own and we can be thankful to the pigs who want me me me and more more more to be their mantra to show themselves through the thinly veiled presentation they have up until now labeled patriotism and now call white supremacy and 1% interest
the dems will take the senate and the house in 18 and in 20 and in the foreseeable future thanks to trump and the emperors new clothes

        thank you 45

      2. Your fear is not entirely unfounded, PJ – but I refuse to despair. I am angry, heartsick, and disgusted by what the current administration has done, but I cannot despair. I refuse to give up hope. There are good people in this crazy, messed up democracy we live in. There are advocates and fighters in DC and beyond. I may be a cockeyed optimist, but I will continue to hope for better days. I have to.

  8. I know there’s a lot of quotes.
As far as about writing there’s my own one-
LET THE WORDS OF THOUGHTS TO FLOAT ON THE PAPER..
AND IT WILL MAKE THE READER TO FLOAT
    ON THOUGHTS
