Waitlisted for Llamas

I do some funny things for my job. I have a program in Vail this June and one of the activities is Wilderness Hiking with Llamas.  I’ve never offered a llama activity before, although I have offered camel safaris more than once.

Turns out the llama activity is very popular and we filled up our available spots quickly, forcing me to contact the supplier to see if we could offer the llama hike on a second day or get more llamas. She was able to confirm more llamas, which meant that I had to contact the two couples who had wanted to do the hike after it sold out.  Who knew?

When explaining this all to the client yesterday I used the phrase “waitlisted for llamas”. Sounds a little like a grunge band, doesn’t it?  Waitlisted for Llamas.

What’s the name of your favorite band (or fantasy band…)?

    1. Puts me in mind of the Tom Hanks movie, “That Thing You Do”, where a one hit wonder band with a Beatle-like (sort of) hit single calls themselves the Oneders (Wonders) and disc jockeys and presenters keep calling them the Ohneeders.

      1. I liked that movie, although the song got a little old by the end. I did love Faye’s (Liv Tyler) line near the end when she says “shame on me for kissing you with my eyes closed so tight.”

  1. I have a candidate for worst band name. There is a South African gospel group that calls itself “The Christian Explainers” I don’t know what they sound like and the “Christian” part of their name is to be expected with a gospel group, but if the “Explainers” part isn’t a buzzkill, I don’t know what is.

  2. Not great at naming bands, but the first idea that popped into my head was “Hopped up on Slow.” That got me to thinking about one of my favorite bands of all time, Huey Lewis and the News. Since Huey and the boys have been around since the early 80s if not before, it might be time for them to consider renaming the group to Huey Lewis and the Olds.

Then I got to thinking about the time in my life when I was a huge fan of Dave Barry books. More than once I found myself laughing hysterically at one of his stories or punchlines, almost to the point of tears. One of his shticks was coming up with a weird combination of words that one doesn’t often say or hear but sounds funny, and then he’d interject the line, “. . . which is also a great name for a rock band.”

Chris in Owatonna (who’s thinking he needs to get a Dave Barry book from the library.)

  3. Don’t know that they’re my favorite band, but I find The Pogues fascinating. Originally called Póg mo Thóin – Irish for “Kiss my arse,” shortened to The Pogues after complaints received by the BBC. You get right away that it’s a band with an attitude.

  4. One of my favorite contemporary groups is I’m With Her. I like the name because it speaks of a certain lack of ego in all three of these talented women. Each is a wonderful performer in her own right, too.

  5. Husband and I have performed in the past with The Fabulous Rez Cars, a band organized by some of our native friends. They play mainly rock and roll and country gospel.

  6. This topic is turning into quite the rabbit hole for me (I’m procrastinating, don’t want to do our tax returns). Did you know there is such a thing as a vegetable orchestra? I love the concept of cooking a soup from the leftovers and serving that to the audience at the end of the concert.

  7. Can’t let this thread go without Barnyard Dance. For some reason, the Martin, Bogen & Armstrong version isn’t on YouTube, so I went with the late Bill Hinkley and Judy Larson:

        1. That was one of my very first comments on this blog, and I was wondering at the time if you all thought I was just a poor speller.

      1. And one of those days when I wished I’d be willing to risk life and limb to partake in a pie festival. Which begs the question, is there savory pie? That might make me reconsider. Too late for this year, though.

        1. Nope. No Savory this year. I wasn’t in a Savory mood when I was coming up with the menu.

        1. How sweet of you, vs, but no thanks. Bernie and Martha would miss me. Hans is headed toward Ely this morning, so I’m on full time pet duty.
