The last couple of mornings, I’ve had to head to work a little early and thanks to Daylight Savings Time, in the dark. I go pretty much straight west on 494 and have been graced both mornings by a huge, supermoon.
According to Wikipedia “A supermoon is a full moon or a new moon that nearly coincides with perigee—the closest that the Moon comes to the Earth in its orbit—resulting in a slightly larger-than-usual apparent size of the lunar disk as viewed from Earth.”
And it turns out that there is an opposite phenomenon – a micromoon. And sadly, the supermoon this week is the last one of 2019.
What do you see when you look at the moon?
I had a great view of the moon on Thursday evening. It was butter yellow, and got smaller as the evening progressed and it rose. It reminds me of the book Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television, a dated but perhaps still pertinent book.

I see the moon. Isn’t that enough?
But in 1835, people were told that if they had a big enough telescope, they would see this:
Here’s one telling of the story:

Rise and Glow Baboons,
Do Baboons howl at the moon? Years ago during a full moon and when my son was about 6 or 7 years old, we walked to the car after an evening movie. There was a full moon. We stopped and howled at the moon in the parking lot for a bit, then laughed at ourselves.
I love that memory.

i don’t get these moon cycles
tuesday at 7 the moon was already way the heck up there and already smaller than a dime
wednesday it was way up before the sun went down and by the time it got dark it was already 1/2 done
yesterday at 9 it was just coming up and huge colorful and entrancing
i remember the closing scene in the prince of tides the hero goes out on the ocean and sits whilevthevsunbsets and the moon rises in tandem
i wish i was more in time with all the outdoorsy stuff but i feel like i am lightyears behind the egyptians and italians who chatted the stars
the mayan ruins and stonehenge with all that stuff lining up lifted up something deep inside
this world with moon and stars and seasons and nature is so incredible i feel guilty sitting in my living room
a night under the stars up north is like a wake up call. we are flea specks.

I don’t visualize much when I look at the moon, but I often think of Sinatra’s great “Fly Me to the Moon,” with the Count Basie Orchestra. One of my all-time favorite “swingingest” songs.

If you’re looking for something different to do tomorrow, come to Rosemount MN and check out the Book Fair that’s part of the RAAC https://www.rosemountwritersfestival.com/. 10:30-4:30, more than 40 local authors from many different genres will be there. It’s a chance to find just the right book for yourself or as a gift to someone you know who loves to read. I’ll be there selling and signing copies of Straight River (my new novel) and Castle Danger. See you there. 🙂

Chris, I sent you a couple of emails to alert you to the fact that you had this event broadcast via an email as happening on the 30th. It may not be a bad idea to send out a correction if you don’t want people to show up on the wrong Saturday. Just a suggestion.

Wow, what a music day, baboons!
Our sunset/moonrise didn’t work this month because completely overcast, but morning after Full Moon I happened to look out west and sat the full setting moon right over the house on the corner (across the street) between their roofline and a chimney of the next house in. It will only be in that position on the Equinox, so my mission is to remember to look there each time… What are the chances?

I think the 30th is in Red Wing, Chris?

Thanks, PJ. I found the goof and fixed it. Fortunately, when I mentioned it on FB and Twitter this week, I did get the date right. Thanks for checking, although I didn’t see any emails from you. And just between you and me, I don’t think my email newsletter drives that much traffic to my events, anyway.

Yes Barb, the 30th is Red Wing. At least I haven’t screwed up that date . . . YET.

Moon images are so plentiful in music that there’s plenty to chose from. Here’s one that I don’t think we’ve featured on the trail before:
I’ve been waiting for Steve to post Greg Brown’s song about the moon following him and his daughters home.

You surprise me, PJ. I love that song and am delighted to post it. What surprises me is that I once was driving with my daughter in the back seat. She observed, “Daddy, the moon is following us home.” Which is like the lyrics of this song. Do you remember my posting that? If you do, I’m impressed!

So now I’m up to three posts on that story? Geez, I need to shut up or find some new material to mention too often.

No you don’t, Steve, that’s how we get to know one another. At this point we have all repeated ourselves on the trail. It’s like reminiscing with old friends. I think we know each other’s musical favorites pretty well, and many of us share old favorites.
Linda is the one that continues to surprise me with just how eclectic her tastes are. She hides a lot of treasures behind that quiet demeanor. ❤

I’m in the camp of moon observers who tend to see it as another of mother nature’s marvels. Perhaps for this reason, I was not as excited as many people were when we first landed a man on the moon; sort of took some of the mystery out of it. Bearing witness to all the destruction that mankind is wreaking on earth, I don’t have much faith we won’t do the same elsewhere.
Can’t have moon music without this:

We’re not making these up, BiR. They are pretty well known mondegreens. We’ve discussed mondegreens sometime in the past, and I just find them irresistible, probably because it’s comforting to know I not the only one who has misheard a lyric.
