The Razzies are out!  They did an online reveal this year and here are the winners:

  • Worst picture: Cats
  • Worst actor: John Travolta for The Fanatic and Trading Paint
  • Worst actress: Hilary Duff for The Haunting of Sharon Tate
  • Worst supporting actress: Rebel Wilson for Cats
  • Worst supporting actor: James Corden for Cats
  • Worst screen combo: Any Two Half-Feline/Half-Human Hairballs in Cats
  • Worst screenplay: Cats
  • Worst director: Tom Hooper for Cats
  • Worst remake, rip-off or sequel: Rambo: Last Blood

Looks like Cats took a licking this year.

    1. I ate some very seed-laden bread on the weekend, and I think that did it. Usually I get this from Swedish meatballs.

  2. I have walked out of three movies in my life. First was “The Sailor who Fell from Grace with the Sea”, a Lord of the Flies kind of thing. Toward the end, when the boys were going to do in Kriss Kristofferson, I didn’t have enough confidence the movie would end well so I went and sat in the lobby. Wasband was really mad so would not tell me how it ended. To this day, I don’t know.

    The second was “Charlie Varrick”with Walter Matthau, who I usually like a lot. But the movie is too violent and I just wasn’t in the mood. Luckily I was seeing this one on my own so didn’t have anybody to be mad at me. I left after the first 20 minutes.

    “Dances with Wolves” is the last one I left. For the most part I liked the movie but toward the end, it was clear it wasn’t going to go well. White soldiers advancing into Native American territory? Unless Kevin Costner completely rewrote history, I really didn’t want to see this on the big screen. Second wasband was not as upset as first wasband had been.

  3. Though I have seen lots of crappy movies in my life, I’ve walked out of exactly one: South Pacific. Mitzi Gaynor strutting around on the beach singing “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair” sent me over the edge. My former, and late, brother-in-law and I looked at each other, nodded toward the exit, and both got up and left. My sister stayed and watched the whole thing. This was several years before they married. Wonder if she remembers that?

    I walked out of “Waterworld” years ago. Boring. Plus all the women had to wear revealing constumes, while the men got to wear real clothing. That gets so old.

    As I recall, Barb liked Cats. I await her opinion on this.

    3. I love it when it’s clear that I am in a community of like-minded friends. I didn’t go see Waterworld at the movie theater but turned it off partway through when I saw it on TV for exactly the same reasons. Boring and why are these women falling out of their clothing?

    4. I go in for my post-op visit at 1 PM at which time the plastic shield will be removed. I have a sense, already, that my vision is vastly improved. Next week you can call me Hawkeye. Thanks for asking.

    1. I tried to watch that after I returned from Ireland, since the retreat center we stayed at was their make up and costuming site. The filming was 4 miles away. When the fake head fell off and looked like a fake head on the ground in the second or third episode, I lost interest. I don’t like gory anyway, but stupid gory is, well, just boring, and they also had female characters in unrealistically revealing costumes.

      1. I try to stay away from gory as much as possible these days. So having read online information about Game of Thrones, I knew it wouldn’t be for me. I’ve never watched it. My baby sister loves the Outlander series, can’t get enough of it but a friend of mine described a scene in the book in the first chapter and then said the film is darker. That was all I needed to stay away.

  6. I have seen quite a few crappy movies over the years but have not walked out of any. I wanted to walk out of “Magnolia” – especially during the “raining frogs” scene. The late Philip Seymour Hoffman was the only saving grace in that disaster. The other movie I should have walked out of was “Get Shorty” – a waste of money.

      I remember kinda liking “Magnolia”… not sure why. We even bought the DVD but I don’t think we’ve ever watched it.

  8. I’ve only walked out of one: The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.

    I’ve turned off the DVD player a few times when I didn’t like the way a movie was going. One was a little film called “Go.” I became worried that the kids in the movie were self destructing with drugs and bad decisions. After re-reading the reviews that led me to rent it, I watched the last part.

    As I’ve mentioned, the film I can’t tolerate at all now is Gone With the Wind. It celebrates cultural values that I have come to hate.

    1. Interesting. I see Gone with the Wind as a snapshot of a time that was dying out and didn’t get the feeling that it was being celebrated. I did read the book before I saw the movie, so maybe that’s part of my view of it?

        1. That’s a reasonable position vs and PJ. One of my problems is that the movie does too well when it presents old attitudes about the South, women and black folks. The stereotypes are so seductive.

  9. I saw Cats on stage and didn’t care for it. The plot of “pick one cat to go to a place that’s not even well-defined” just didn’t do it much for me. And except for the one good song, Memories, the music doesn’t make it any better for me. So I won’t be going to see the movie no matter what the critics say.

  10. So-called action movies, or movies essentially made to showcase special effects, don’t do anything for me, so I avoid them. Same thing for lots of gore and violence. Add to that the soundtracks in most of today’s movies are downright painful to listen to, I just don’t enjoy going to the movies anymore.

    Noise seems to have become such an integral part of everyday life that it’s hard to find a restaurant anymore where you can carry on a conversation over dinner. Or have I just become old and cranky?

    3. COVID19 just solved the restaurant noise problem. We have had to change favorite restaurants since Lou got hearing aids—some are so loud he cannot participate in the conversation.

    4. I’ve always liked Khyber Pass for its atmosphere of quiet calm. It’s never crowded, and people don’t have to shout over each other. Carpets hang from the ceiling and probably play a role in softening the sound. I think they are doing some takeout for the duration. I look forward to eating in again sometime in the not too distant future.

  11. My friend Jerry says if there’s popcorn he’ll go any movie.

    Kelly and I call “NOT IT!” during previews of movies we think daughter might want to see. I called “not it” to all the smurf movies. She called it for the upcoming ‘Sponge Bob’. I missed it for the ‘Scooby Doo’ movie coming up. Dang.
    I’ve slept through parts of a few movies including operas.

    The only one I think I’ve walked out of was one of those operas. They just kept saying the same thing over and over and over. Only one set, only two people and nothing happening except “Do you Love me? Do you Love me? Do you love me?” “Yes I love you. Yes I love you Yes I love you!” “Will you love me will you love me Will you love me?” “Yes I’ll love you Yes I’ll love you Yes I’ll love you.” OH MY GOODNESS! JUST kill each other and get on with it already!!
    Had to leave.

    Last Sunday we went to see “Onward” at the theater. It was really fun. Better than I expected. Sweet story too.
    Was only a few of us in the theater. And their credit card machine was down and we had $7 cash. Can’t get popcorn or a drink for that (and daughter wanted popcorn) so Kelly was going to go get cash while daughter and I went to the movie. She asked the manager for something so she could get back in since I had the digital ticket and the manager said “Oh, don’t do that; I’ll give you drinks and popcorn.” WOWZERS! Three free drinks AND a bucket for free??? We really appreciated her doing her little bit for humanity. Extra appreciative.

        I hear that changes might be coming, with more (or even all) films being released for streaming without the delay while they run in theaters. I wouldn’t be surprised if this virus is the death knell for movie theaters.

  13. I’m very selective about the movies I am willing to see in a theater and so I can’t remember any I’ve actually walked out of. There are a few I would have walked of had I been alone, but then if I had been alone, those wouldn’t have been movies I would have chosen.

    I hated the movie of the musical, Chicago and would have walked out if Robin hadn’t also been there. I think Renee Zellwiger had just had her lips botoxed or something and her lips were all over the screen. There was some sort of scene with Richard Geer and marionettes that just about put me over the edge. I’ve tried to blot it from my memory.

    Many of the movies I’ve hated the most were ones someone talked me into. I hated Mamma Mia. I hated The Piano. I hated Cabaret. (I know Jacque said she liked it but I actually was offended that friends thought I would enjoy it).

    2. I, too, disliked Mama Mia, but I liked The Piano and Cabaret. Part of it, I think, depends on being in the right frame of mind for a particular offering, whatever it is.

      OT – Just got back from my post-op exam. I’m happy to report that everything looks great and will look even better in a couple of days. So far, my hindsight is perfect, and general outlook is good, too, especially considering the bleak circumstances.

  14. when i started taking my mom to movies she left eating raoul and she also left pulp fiction

    i really enjoyed pulp fiction and found eating raoul to be a memorable picture just because of the sweeney toddlike storyline (not sure which came first)

    back in the day piper film club had gross out night which was a compilation of concentration camp, slaughterhouse, and horrendous stuff on film that left you with your stomach inside out
    but i stayed

    i see lots of terrible movies and feel sorry for the actors who showed up for work with great ambition and expectations

    i really like james coffin and jennifer hudson and am sure cats was a grand idea gone wrong

    i hear nicolas cage is famous for making bad choices but i’m not a big enough fan to know
    he’s fine with me

      1. It’s a rather dark comedy. The full title is Eating Raul, and it’s a rather bizarre, in my opinion. I saw it many years ago.

  15. i saw cats from front rower balcony seats sitting next to two old ladies that remind you of the old ladies from mr smith goes to washington or arsenic and old lace
    part one is cat after cat telling their story in moderately entertaining ways. jellico cats etc…then intermission
    they seemed delighted with their big night out and were very pleased with the first act and i looked forward to their response after the big number in the finale. i sat and the theater darkened and the second act began i thought they were slowed by the restroom line but no they never came back
    i think they thought it was over
    i felt bad but then realized that except for memories it was a bit jumbled

My next film, after the Diverticulitis film, is an action film in which I leave for Minnesota tomorrow morning, four days earlier than planned, as Friend’s rotator cuff surgery has been rescheduled for this Friday. Watch Renee evade viruses and slippery roads to spend a week in Howard Lake. See her scour Hutchinson for supplies. See her triumphant return to western ND late next week!

  19. A friend of a friend posted this to FB, to be sung to the tune of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Modern Major General. Give this a whirl:

    “I am the very model of effective social distancing!
    I listen to the experts on the topic of resistance-ing;
    I know that brunch and yoga class aren’t nearly as imperative
    As doing what I can to change the nation’s viral narrative.

    I’m very well acquainted, too, with living solidarily
    And confident that everyone can do it temporarily:
    Go take a walk, or ride a bike, or dig into an unread book;
    Avoid the bars and restaurants and carry out, or learn to cook.

    There’s lots of stuff to watch online while keeping safe from sinus ills
    (In this case, it’s far better to enjoy your Netflix MINUS chills)!
    Adopt a pet, compose a ballad, write some earnest doggerel,
    And help demolish Trump before our next event inaugural.

    Pandemics are alarming, but they aren’t insurmountable
    If everybody pitches in to hold ourselves accountable.
    In short, please do your part to practice prudent co-existence-ing,
    And be the very model of effective social distancing!”
