Bye Bye Bicarbonate

I needed baking soda for a project.  I wasn’t sure how much I needed for the entire project and I wasn’t sure how much I actually had in the house.  YA and I were at Costco and I thought maybe I would get it there and not have to make another trip.  Of course, being Costco, the baking soda came in a 13.5 pound bag.

I waffled and waffled about whether to get it.  The project SHOULD work – I’d seen it with my own eyes on the internet – and I would need a bit but 13.5 pounds of baking soda is a LOT of baking soda.  As I stood in the aisle I thought… what family needs that much baking soda?  Eventually I caved and sent YA back to the baking aisle to retrieve it.

I’ll give you one guess.  That’s right, the project did NOT work out the way it shows on the internet.  AND it turns out I had enough baking soda in the cabinet to do the test run.  Sigh.  So now I have a 13.5 pound bag of baking soda sitting on the counter making me feel like a fool every time I walk into the kitchen.  It wasn’t that much money, but I really should have known better.

If any baboons in the Twin Cities area need a cup or two of baking soda, I’ll be happy to bring it by.  Hopefully I won’t get stopped by the police with a bunch of baggies of white powder in the car!

  1. Now. I am wallowing in grief for the deaths of my budgies Pete, Delmar, Yankee and Rebel. I can’t seem to help myself. Heck, they were just birds. Nope.

    2. UffDa Wes, as another animal lover, I understand the level of daily loss that becomes—critters just bring such companionship. I wish it was different for you.

  2. I use baking soda for a lot of cleaning chores. Mixed with a little white vinegar or lemon juice, baking soda makes a wonderful non-toxic cleaning agent for kitchen and bathrooms. It’s great for deodorizing the garbage pail, refrigerator, and kitty litter box as well. Don’t fret, vs, you’ll find lots of uses for it, including weed control. I love that stuff.

  4. For the past month we’ve been overindulging in cucumbers, and they keep coming. And tomatoes are ripening fast and furious now, as well, but they are a little easier to contend with. I attempting to keep up with the cucumbers I’ve neglected the kale which is in the raised bed on the side of the house. I’m almost afraid to go out and look to see what’s happening there.

    1. Oh, I understand. I processed 6 qts of tomato sauce last night. The shell-out pole beans are ripening and will need blanching and freezing, and the cantelopes are ripening quickly. Lots of garden activity.

  5. hey vs I will take whatever baking soda you want to sell
    I go through baking soda like water used both for my indigestion and my wife’s carpet cleaning fetish
    we like PJ use it with vinegar and water for cleaning lots of stuff and I go through five or six of those 13 pound bags a year

  6. I tend to over indulge as a standard operating procedure
    10 years ago I had 15 fish tanks to salt water and 13 various sized freshwater tanks one kept out in the garage to get out of my warehouse one in each of the kids bedrooms one of my offices one in the kitchen one of the living room with the TV room and so decorating the tanks was an exciting option kind of like changing the furniture in the living room for some people

    The rock obviously had some toxic quality that killed all the fish with normal tolerances and only allowed the super fish to live on Lord knows with how much damage to their systems

    Wish I sure am sorry about your birds I kept Canaries for a bunch of years and just loved having them around the joy and the Twitter brings delight.

    2. In the sixth grade at Park elementary school, Moorhead, we had a classroom aquarium. There was a rotation for care of the fish and I got a Friday assignment. When we returned to school Monday, all but a Betta were dead. I must have bumped the heat up but my teacher covered up the truth.

    2. I got two really heavy metal cookie sheets at a garage sale several years ago that have a lot of baked on stuff at the corners. I’ve used them for a couple of years but it kind of bugs me so I was trying to find a way around the endless scraping and scrubbing that it’s gonna take to clean those up. Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide was the method. Maybe it works on less baked on crud…..

  8. My usual over-indulgence is chocolate bars, any kind of milk chocolate goodies. I managed to wean myself from that lately by getting dark chocolate, which isn’t nearly so addicting, for me anyway.

    Ice cream is another one (notice that these are all sweets), and I now keep that in the basement freezer, so at least you have to work to get it.
