A New Year

January 1 is a big day around here, although not for the reasons you would think.  I am a calendar person – I love calendars.  Right now I have my daytimer calendar (which lives in my bedroom), a handmade 6 x 6 calendar (also in my bedroom), a Cobblestone Way calendar on the fridge, a Lighthouse for the Blind calendar in the breakfast room, a birthdays only calendar in my studio and the new addition, a Sandra Boynton calendar (also in my studio).   I do keep a few things on my phone’s calendar and when I was still working in my cubicle, I had a calendar there, not to mention my Outlook calendar on my computer.

Most of these calendars are just for show.  Probably the most-used calendar is the birthdays only calendar in my studio.  It has one page per month with all the dates, but no weekly/day layout so it doesn’t have to get changed out every year.  I use it every month when I’m getting the birthday cards ready to go.  The Sandra Boynton calendar is just for fun – January 4 is listed as World Hypnotism Day.

Not sure where along the line I got hooked on calendars; I suppose it’s been ramping up as the years go by.  I don’t think it makes me any more organized, just a personality quirk I guess.

But it does make the first day of each month exciting because that’s when I change out the calendars.  And January 1 means not just moving to the next page but moving to a whole new calendar (except the birthday one, of course).  Tell me that this doesn’t make me a sad and pathetic being.

What have you got on YOUR calendar this month?

  1. Vs, you are as far from a “sad and pathetic being” as I can imagine, your calendar quirk notwithstanding. Your occasional, beautiful, handcrafted cards have lifted my spirits more than once, and I’m pretty sure there are lots of other people, baboons included, who feel that way.

    1. This artist and his warehouse are in Decorah, Ia. We have some of his work which is always whimsical. I did not know he had a calendar, but I will check that out.

      1. Yes, he used to participate in various arts and crafts fairs in the Twin Cities years ago, and had cards and other stuff for sale at a couple of local gift stores.

it’s a cool sport full of the right culture and attitude

the trip was to a weekend tournament to close out her high school career and she did a half years worth before the season stopped in march/april

she’s still attending online meetings and looking forward to getting back into it

    2. I had to quit the word a day, joke a day kinds of calendars because I kept keeping the squares as I was ripping them off thinking I wanted to read them again later or somehow keep them. So by the end of the year I’d have a little stacks of square pages all over the place.

  4. Not much. My music activities are still suspended. The only regular activity for months now has been twice a month acupuncture treatments for various aches (very good Covid protocols in place). Now that the holidays are over I need to get several overdue appointments taken care of (dental, bone density scan – real fun stuff!), and get back to regular massage sessions (again, good Covid protocols in place). Such an exciting life I lead! Actually, I still am getting out for walks with friends and hope to break out the snowshoes this week.

  5. This month I have a mammogram, a regulatory board meeting, an oral exam for said board, and probably attending to Husband after he has carpal tunnel surgery. It has yet to be scheduled, but he has his preop appointment this morning. My calendar in my work office is from the World Wildlife Federation, and features birds.

We are home now after a lovely visit in Brookings and a 7 hour drive back yesterday. That drive gets more tiring every time we do it.

    1. My carpal tunnel surgery was called ‘sonex’- ultrasound guided surgery. About a week’s recovery—- I did both wrists at the same time. If it’s not too late, look into that.

  6. Rise and Shine, Baboons,

The first thing on my calendar is returning to work tomorrow. That will be a tough morning after my 11 days off. I needed the break. I had been pushing myself too hard over the fall into winter. Therefore, I have spent a lot of time here napping, watching the Great British Baking Show, and walking. I have to regain my stamina which I have struggled with for a year now. Each time I get back to the gym and make progress with weights and cardio training, the gym gets closed or I get sick or I have surgery. I also brought my yoga DVDs for old ladies which is on my calendar 3 times per week

On my 2021 calendar is my Master Gardener program (orientation next week!), visiting family here in the great outdoors, and getting Lou new hearing aides because the old ones squeal a lot and drive both of us nuts. Soon we will watch kitchen demo on our camera, then re-construction. Somewhere on the workplace calendar, is the task of completing the certification that we started, failed, then all was delayed by COVID.

Our AZ calendar is now outdated. I have to find a 2021 to hang here.

  7. I have calendars all over the place, and there are issues sometimes about transferring data… I used to get them all at Half Price Books because they had a great selection and were… half price! But I no longer have access to them. I have just created my own desk calendar – the spiral bound weekly page-turner – because I haven’t seen one I like enough – Sierra Club one is a perennial favorite, with gorgeous photos.

There are a few things on the calendar like zoom board meetings, an annual physical, and we’re starting to schedule walks with friends at some place like the cemetery, where there are wide roadways where we can spread out as we walk and talk.

  8. For the past ten years I have made my own calendars on my MacBook or Shutterfly using photos from my international trips. Since there were no international trips in 2020, this years calendar just has local pics – Lake Phalen, Lakewood Cemetery in the Spring, Whitetail Woods Regional Park in Lakeville, Spring Lake Regional Park in Hastings, and Tettegouche, Gooseberry, and Split Rock on the North Shore. That’s the only calendar I hang in the house. I have a purse size two year planner that stays in my purse. And, of course, my online calendar.

    1. Daughter makes us a calendar every year via Shutterfly. Each month has several photos at the top, last few years of only the four grandchildren. By December we can see how much they have matured. But it also includes birthdays and other hallmark dates printed on it. She makes one for her inlaws with their pictures and dates on it.
That is our only calendar as such, on which Sandy also writes in all her friends birthdays and such. I make two limited calendars, or lists of dates. One on refrigerator of all important dates, mostly medical appointments. in the next few months. Sandy has forgotten it is there, but I can use it to prove what I say is true. I write up a day sheet each day with forecast for next several days and plans we have to do things. At the top it features todays date, forecast and meal plan.
I want to use a digital calendar of some form, but it gets superfluous and I find it is too much bother. And digital calendars want to beep ot alarm ne when I do not need it or want it.

  9. Well, Husband’s carpal tunnel surgery is off, as the surgeon gave him a cortisone shot and told him it would do the same thing as surgery. That is a good thing to not have on my calendar.

      1. I had ‘trigger thumb’. It sort of ‘snapped’ into position. Cortisone helped that. But still needed the SONEX surgery later. I know, not really related.

    1. I had thumb problems about a year and a half ago and both of my friends who had similar problems had to have multiple Cortizone shots and one eventually had to have surgery. So I wasn’t holding my breath about the shot but it’s been almost a year and a half on the thumb is still fine.

  10. Jacque, calendars of all kinds are a weakness of mine too. I used to put up several for the pictures, and like tim I like the daily tear off kind too. But wall space is limited here and it a waste of money, so I avoided the calendar section of B&N, which I have not been in for two years or so despite being 3/4 mile away.

  11. There is nothing at all on my calendar except two vaccinations, and since nobody knows when they might happen my 2021 calendar is still open, awaiting the first planned event.

When I had a normal life, we recorded upcoming events on Sierra Club Wilderness daily planners. My erstwife was smart enough to keep the old planners at year’s end. When I constructed a brief history of our family, those old calendars were the primary source material.

      1. At the time you write in the appointment, it is an event you think you will never forget. Thirty years later you read that you had lunch with Judy Wilson and you think, “Who the heck is/was Judy Wilson?” But then, I know better than to think everyone shares my obsession with past events.

  12. OT – Our mail carrier is delivering today’s mail in a shirt with short sleeves!

Also I finally got around to roasting that turkey leg quarter I bought for Thanksgiving yesterday, so today I’m cooking up a big pot of Renee’s Turkey Chipotle Chowder.

    1. Yum! I made some for daughter when she was home. It always tastes better the next day. She said it tasted the way it ought, unlike when her father makes it.

    2. It’s a great recipe, but so rich. I only use one cup of (shredded cheese, as opposed to two) when I make it. I suspect that some of the cheese ends up stuck to the bottom of the pot anyway.

Regarding calendars, I use them sparingly. When I was working more, I had one on the wall in my office and often in December the calendar would still be showing January. We have one calendar I contribute to and it’s mostly so Robin knows what fixed appointments I have.

I don’t need no stinkin’ calendar.

      1. I went easy of the cheese and heavy cream as well, and substituted cilantro for the parsley called for in the recipe. I made a salsa of tomato, avocado, jalapeño pepper, cilantro, and red onion with lime juice, and added a big spoonful of that to each bowlful of the chowder. Served with El Burrito corn chips; a very satisfying meal. Pretty sure it wouldn’t have passed muster with Renee’s daughter, but we liked it, and there’s enough left over for a small bowlful tomorrow, along with a quesadilla of some sort.

  13. I have heard myself tell others: If you want to get something (more exercise, a specific kind of reading, whatever… put it on your calendar. So I’m trying to take my own advice, and write in the days I will do Zoom exercise or t’ai chi, or walks. An VS has reminded me that I need to get out my birthday calendar and fill in my wall calendar with the birthdays.

  14. I also need to add a quarterly meeting to my January calendar for a small church committee I serve on to provide support for our senior pastor. We meet next Tuesday. The bells play the end of the month, and the choir will sing in a couple of weeks.

  15. I’ve been in a one day at a time mode for awhile now. The pandemic pretty much cleared my calendar for most of last year. There are a few things on it now, but not a lot. Waiting for a time when we can put another Blevins book club meeting on the calendar. Maybe April…or May…

  16. I rarely write appointments down, not that I have that many of them. Medical appointment always send reminders, and at the moment Walgreens is bombarding me with reminders that I need to refill a prescription.

This week, Jeopardy! is showing the final five shows taped with Alex Trebek, I don’t need a calendar to remember that.

I’m afraid I’m also nearing the final Sunday visit with Philip. He was in rough shape yesterday. He met with his care team today to discuss the possibility of a nursing home as his next stop; in his current situation they are unable to give him enough morphine to control his pain. Tough, tough decision for his pain-addled brain to make because we all know that once he’s in a nursing home, he will not be allowed visitors for the foreseeable future, and his future, I’m sure, is very limited.

  17. I got a lot of things on the calendar yet. Different stuff from other years, but a lot of stuff.
Donated platelets today. Plus a meeting and then had to meet a contractor for the theater remodeling.
Tomorrow is a massage and, again, letting contractor into the theater.
Dog vet appointment Saturday as well as a zoom board meeting.
    Always something.
