Shining Through

During pandemic, one of the ways I’ve been keeping myself busy is by making jewelry.  I’ve done a handful of “kits” from a craft company I like that features glass tiles over various kinds of artwork.  A few bracelets, some necklaces and a good number of earrings.

When I saw that the largest diamond ever discovered in the world was found on this day in 1905, I was intrigued.  The Cullinan was mined in South Africa at 3,106.75 carats – about the size of a baseball. Nothing larger has ever been found.  It was given to King Edward VII in 1907 and was eventually cleaved in 1908 into 9 large stones, 97 small “brilliants”.  The worth of the Cullinan is listed as “about” 2 billion dollars and almost all the diamonds belong to the English royal family and are housed in the Tower of London along with the other Crown Jewels.

I assume it goes without saying that none of my jewelry kits includes any diamonds.  I would be too nervous to own jewelry that had any significant value, not to mention that I don’t actually care much for precious stones.   Of course it’s just ridiculous that I am making jewelry these days…I suppose I could wear earrings and rings every day but they would just clash with my sweat pants.  Once a month I do wear earrings for my Zoom book club, but that’s it.  Hopefully if pandemic ends, I’ll have some occasions for jewelry again.

How are you like to get decked out?  Any diamonds in your safe-deposit box?

  1. I have a string of pearls, and that is about it. My mother-in-law sent me a gold necklace with large links for or my birthday, but just costume jewelry, not real gold, of course. I am allergic to all metals, so I can’t wear pierced earrings.

I have a jewelry box full of necklaces and bracelets, things my mother and Husband’s deceased mother had. I never wear them. Husband’s stepmother used to work in a jewelry store and considered becoming a gemologist. She has lots of expensive stuff.

    1. The only place I go where I have to be dressed up is court when I testify as an expert witness. Diamonds and pearls just don’t seem right in the Southwest District Court witness box.

  2. After watching a documentary on De Beers, my disdain for diamonds is visceral. During WW2, Hitler never lacked industrial diamonds for machine cutting. De Beers controlled the world-wide supply. Soldiers fought and died protecting the company that helped make the weapons that killed them. Then after the war, De Beers advertising went to work selling engagement rings to surviving soldiers. Since then, the only gems I bought for the ex were Australian emeralds. I rarely wear my emerald tie tack and cufflinks.

  3. I am not much of a jewelry person. I couldn’t wear rings at work (NICU) and they bother me when playing piano. Also, I have very small hands with short fingers and most rings are too big. My ears are pierced and I have a small collection of earrings – the most valuable being small pearl ones purchased in Vietnam. There are a couple pair I wear 95% of the time. The rest live happily in my jewelry box and only come out occasionally. Unless they are stretchy, most bracelets are too big for my small wrists so I own very few and wear them rarely. My most precious necklace is an opal pendant purchased in Australia. It does have a couple of very tiny diamonds in the pendant which are the only diamonds I own – again, not worn very often. The other necklaces are just costume jewelry though a few have sentimental value. I own one watch and only wear it when traveling. That hearkens back to my NICU days where we had large sweep second hand clocks on the walls – watches were considered too dirty for our precious little premies with their poorly developed immune systems.

  4. My jewelry trends more towards the slightly funky, not posh. I have pearls from being in a couple of weddings (gifts from the bride so we would all match) that get trotted out about once every 5-10 years. I like to wear rings, but mostly haven’t while I have been working from home – though I do put them on when I go out for anything more that a trip to the grocery store. Most of them are just silver, no stones.

I own one lone ring with diamond chips. It belonged to a great aunt – then my grandmother wore it – Mom got it next – and now me. I wear it more because of the family connections than the sparkle, I’m not really a fan of diamonds. My wedding ring has sapphires and amethyst. One of the tines broke on the setting for the central amethyst and I lost that stone. It’s been broken for quite some time and I keep meaning to find a place I can get it repaired – the shop that created the guard ring and has worked on it before is only open odd hours (and is in Excelsior) and closer places mostly only do work on pieces they have sold. So the wedding ring sits, waiting for repair, because I can’t get my poop in a pile at the right time to drive out to Excelsior. There is a metaphor there, I am sure…

  5. My grandfather on my my father’s side was a carpenter for most of his life, but he later became a gem cutter. Perhaps the carpentry became too difficult as he aged, or maybe he was injured, and decided to change careers. He died before I was born, but my sister and I each received a diamond ring with his handiwork. I also got a red gem that I’m told is a synthetic ruby, and my sister got an opal. None of the rings are terribly valuable. I’m not a big admirer of diamonds; I tend to favor jewelry that has more color. I do like the diamond ring I own, though – it has a pretty setting and is quite understated.

  6. Rise and Show your Bling, Baboons,

We need a cartoon meme here of a Baboon decked out in Bling. Bill?

I like a little jewelry, but most of what I have is very modest, inherited items from the end of the frontier. My grandpa gave my grandma a tiny diamond in 1919 that represented everything he had in the world. I have that, but 2 settings wore out long, long ago. When I married Lou the strangest thing happened that allowed me to see a different side of my mother, that I never noticed before. Lou and I had our rings made from some investment grade diamonds he had bought in a rush of poor investments. They were not worth what he paid, so we just used them for ourselves. When my mother saw the ring, she said in a snit, “Well, I guess I don’t have the nicest ring in the family anymore. Hmph.” I nearly fell over. I had not know she felt such a sense of competition in that area. Gardens, yes. Children, yes. Husbands, yes. Diamond rings, no. She was always so practical and against fashion trends, that I had no idea. Although she has been widowed 33 years, she has never stopped wearing that ring. Go figure.

    1. OT, I got in to see a podiatrist yesterday and had my foot Xrayed. Stress fracture. I am now wearing a lovely, fashionable black shoe that does not allow the foot to move. 2 weeks.

I am glad it was not anything worse. The universe better remember that this was incident 3/3 of bad news. I am done now.

  7. I’m a very casual jewelry person. I like rings, but have found they come and go – seem to have a mind of their own… favorite is an opal with two tiny diamonds that was my (surprise!) 25th Anniversary present from Husband. More later…

  8. I have a plain gold band wedding ring. I wore a watch for a few jobs early in my career, but the last I wore one regularly was probably back in the late 80s.

Wife’s not a jewelry enthusiast either. Earrings are about it now that’s she’s retired. If she gets dressed up for something like a Christmas party, she may wear a necklace or a brooch. Nevertheless, she still has a drawerful of jewelry she collected during her working career because apparently working women not only need a fresh variety of fashionable clothes every season, they need the latest in jewelry too. Wayyy over my paygrade of understanding.

And none is worth more than costume jewelry except her wedding and engagement rings (gold) and the microscopic diamond earrings I gave her as a graduation present from Nursing school back in 1977.

  9. When we married half a century ago, Robin and I had matching rings designed and made by an art professor at Carleton who was a friend of Robin’s parents. Robin’s ring had an opal set into it and my size 11 ring was just a lot of gold. Neither she nor I had any regard for diamonds. Within a very few years, Robin lost her ring when her hand got stuck in a mail chute. We bought her a replacement gold band, which she also lost. She really wanted a ring and wanted it to be custom designed, so a few years ago we talked to a craft jeweler she had met previously and made plans for a ring. The stone is green—a peridot, I think—set in a circular bezel. At the same time, I engaged the jeweler to make me a matching band. My original ring no longer fit and so I used that as part of the payment for the two rings.

    1. You might want to get a spare… I have also lost rings, i.e. original engagement ring – somehow slipped off, somewhere. That opal for our 25th was custom made to be similar to the one lost. This comment could go in yesterday’s mysteries, because I never took it off.

  10. I’ve tried to get myself to wear bracelets, which I have a fair number of, some quite nice from art fair. And once every few years I find some piece that I wear all the time on a thin gold chain, until I lose it. I also have a pretty good collection of pierced earrings, but mostly rotate through 3 or 4 of them.

  11. My wedding ring was the ring Husband’s mother wore until she died. It had a .5 ct diamond in it with a thin gold double band. After my mother died in 2014, I used the ring I had, along with my mother’s ring with a 1 ct diamond she got on her 25th wedding anniversary, and her original wedding ring with the miniscule diamond in it that was all my dad could afford in 1942 when they married, and I had them all melted down and made into a new ring with all three original stones and a few other tiny ones to fill in a channel in the new design. I treasure it.

  12. Our wedding bands are simple, narrow, handcrafted white gold bands. On that same ring finger I also wear a white gold eternity ring with 10 small diamonds. The diamonds came from a ring that belonged to
husband’s deceased mother, a more elaborate and showy ring than I cared to wear. As a surprise, husband had them reset by a local jeweler, and gave it to me one year for Christmas early on in our marriage. On my right hand I wear a silver ring handcrafted by some Swedish artisan. I never remove any of my rings.

Another piece of jewelry that I always wear is a bracelet. It’s a beautiful silver chain, crafted by John hardy. I bought it about twenty-five years ago from a young man on Craigslist. It had been his deceased mother’s, a gift from her husband that she never wore. I met up with the seller at Calhoun Square for the exchange of my dollars for his mom’s bracelet. He was a pretty obviously gay man, and had decided that he needed the money more than the bracelet that he would never have a use for. I love this bracelet, and take it off only when bathing. You can find a photo of it if you google Tiga chain bracelet. It’s one of my prize possessions.

The only other “jewelry” I wear regularly is my amber necklace. I don’t feel dressed without it. It’s a string of large, raw amber chunks that  my sister gave to me for my 40th birthday. I’ve worn it almost daily for close to thirty-eight years. People at the stores and places I frequent regularly (such as the farmer’s market) often comment on my beads, and call me the amber lady.

      1. My amber isn’t the highly polished and clear amber that most people are familiar with. Mine is mostly opaque and pretty rustic looking, it’s hard to tell what might be inside. I like to think of it as being so ancient that it’s sap from trees that lived when dinosaurs roamed the earth, but it’s holding up a lot better than I am. 🙂

  14. I cannot wear my wedding ring anymore. I have big issues with touch and tight things. It is hanging on a chain right in front of me. A thick gold band. She has the same, not quite as wide. We bought them in a jewelry store on University Avenue right across from Stub and Herb’s, where we decided to get married one work day for lunch. Total bill was about $50. Sandy later added a diamond onto her ring. We were too broke to buy a diamond when we got married in our rush in 1965. That diamond covers that absence. But it was crisis of conscience for me to buy that diamond. The diamond world is a fake shortage and cooked prices so many of them obtained on the hard labor and deaths of those who had/have, one way and another, no choice.
Sandy’s best friend is rich and her second husband filthy rich. She will not inherit his fortune, which she wanted to be true when they were married 8 years ago. but he keeps buying her diamonds of all kinds. She walks around wearing them, only a some of them at a time because she has so many. She has, Sandy says, over 30 rings. She wears them when she attends her various liberal causes and she does give generously and does good work. She often gets called out for the diamonds at meetings. She refuses to accept what most of us know to be true.
Sandy is jealous. I refuse to bear any shame, as she seems to want, for not loading her up with diamonds. She seems to have dropped the issue but she has not been with her friend for 10 months now.

  15. It’s crazy but I lost my class ring while digging out of snow drifts on a county road near Ada, Minnesota. In the spring I got it back as a farmer found it on the road and recognized the school. It was bent and I never wore it again. I lost track of it. I’m sure the ex got it.

  16. good job! kept yourself busy! we were doing the same thing too, yet write down all the things y9u had done to keep yourself busy during the pandemic because those routines might just come up rewarding. i mean we were making a couple things, inventions, cant describe them on the intranet to prevent intellectual property theft yet we were making a family blanket from old clothes and doing collections of clothes we couldn’t wear any more and made donations to moring star mission so the men and women have clothes to wear ( there was a number of people that was sleeping outside in the snow and cold and so the quickest thing we could take part in was providing clothing that included a snow suit and a jacket and gloves and socks and shirts and pants, too they wash all their stuff, yet we both had medical problems that kida had us to buy new clothing and the clothing was in some cases brand new, yet that compassion is needed everywhere, people have things that they will never find a use for do to life style adjustments or what have you and there are human needs out there so we donated clothing to help). we were studying things too ie tap water, tap water that had a drainage from the utinsile holder in the wire rack to the brand new mat that is right under the mat and the collection of water types of chemicals is way to much too fast. we just bought the dish drainer and wire rack nd mat under it to drain the water into the sink, we bought it at bed bath and beyond and added it to our kitchen not that long ago and it is clear see threw plastic and we can see the chemicals we were drinking of which we stopped do to our cat became ill from the water as well as us that led to medical expenses, wardrobe losses, damage to internal pipes that lessened the inner opening of the pipes by 70% as the repair man shown us and had replaced so many water faucets and spent so much money on all kinds of cleaners just to forcefully scrap off the chemicals from the brand new spiket and the thing is I was taking before and after pictures of each event ie before the chemicals builot up and when the rack and dish drainer was new to the after effect of like a couple months and my Lord when ya can see the chemicals ya had been drinking ya discover a whole new parameter of issues and financial losses and medical illnesses and property damage do to water ie including but not limited to shower curtins and many other things. worked ona few things including how to be a better man and I had no clue as to how difficult I was seemingly being to family and neighbors or friends do to I had this internal belief we are suppose to be we the people and all is applicable in every matter and or issue to everyone and if it affects your neighbors and or yourself it could affect yourself just the same. another thing I was doing was studying the linchen build up on carl’s dense that faces my yard and is close to my dryer vent by about five to six feet and the interesting thing there is if ya think in the sense of how or what they meant by global climate change do to carbons when ya see only one part of a sense build up linchen in one area of the fence and the rest of the fence doesn’t have any klinchen then ya have to figure our why as I priorly knew the type of linchen is from carbon and looked around and it dawned on me it was from the exhaust from my dryer vent, then looked at a couple neighbors areas where their dryer vents were to have comparable models and it was the same and I took pictures also took pictures of how fast the linchen built up on the tree trunks that don’t have that type of growth unless their ina very tropical area of land, found out too that trees if the ro0ots are surrounded by pavement on the soil or cement driveways or sidewalks it takes a lot longer for the tree roots to actually dehydrate and makes the tree a bit more flimsy with water retention in the limbs where weak winds were able to rip fairly stong young or old branches off trees where the y of the tree or the branch areas where there is a croch made a breading ground for insects to build up in that also caused further harm to trees, there is a number of other things

And, at the begining of the pandemic, we used her Mom’s sewing things, after collecting clothes we were going to throw away the clothes wern’t even donatable, and i took the sissors and cut up the fabric sewing a blanket, it’s like a tiny little throw. i created from discarded objects. What did you do during the pandemic during the lock downs?

This is probably not the appropriate place for us to have this kind of personal exchange. I hope your disability is temporary, and that you may return to a more “normal” life after the pandemic. Keep writing, it’s a good way to sort out what’s going on in your head.

        2. im engaged to a woman i live with. we’re both older too. no worries. yet, i miss the times when i could normally function. i use to be a drywall taper and painter, it was my passion and wound up painting my own paintings on canvasses and streached one over a blank frame i made from a drywall drop cloth. made my own art easel, purchased paints. am waiting for the summer sunny weather so i can set my easel up in my front yard again and paint my neighborhood on a canvass, Lord knows ive sketched it many times on pencile and my neighbors think im a really good artist, i just had been trying ot find my own styloe to not plagerize someone elses style in paintings or poems ect.

Ok, you have a warm and happy day. And, really, im not kidding, thank you for writing me back. I feel like im a human again. It’s sorta like charlie brown that always has a hard time no matter how hard he try’s in some respects, i was used for informationpurposes only then was stolen from by innovations that was one of a kind, an invention ya know like tesla or franklin or the wright brothers that ive also read their books.

We were at the library today. Instead of throwing the books out they sell them. we bought two of them today for one dollar at the joliet public library black road branch. She told me prior to paying for the two books that was fifty cents each, she stated you wont read these two, she knows the types of books i use to read. and without wanting to cause calamity in the library as i have anxietys too especially after the pandemic, i stated well, we had a flood in thebasement where we have about two thousand books, some were damaged from the flood and we can start collection books again even if their a differant title then what we read. She looked at me and agreed. Yet, we keep looking for the titloesd we lost during the flood and can never find them. Thank God War & Peace was on a higher shelf, that one cost a pretty penny at a used book store.

        3. yeah ya did. the woman i am engaged to im in love with. she knows my emotional baggage that can become overly wearing on her and my neighbors too and even people at the store. Emotional baggage as unresolved issues from long ago. it was going to be my climax and denoucement in oneof my books. im trying to build the courage to try writing a novel again.

i was working with a very promising publisher at one time in Leeds, New York, Prestige Publishing Company. Yet, she kinda shocked me when she proposed to me in a letter just from helping her with three ms’s to help her medical bills and her publishing company that wasn’t doing well because she was in the hospital a lot do to breast cancer. She was married as she told me. She began writing to me, her husband didnt even know. then one day she asked me to marry her and that she just got a divorce. No harm to be meant what-so-ever, i was really bad feeling that day, yet that was so way long ago, ie like 35 years ago when i use to be handsome like everyone else that thinks beauty is only given to the young. Not so.

I’m really trying not to over load pages or blog posts defined to one area of subject or topic. Thats what i couldnt comprehend when writing on other blogs as well. Me? I think if someone reply’s to me no matter who they are, it’s a gift from heaqven where the abadonment feelings disapear from my past when i was seperated from my siblings and family.

There’s many things like that. Without a doubt, im more then sure many peop,e have had the same kinds of episodes in their lives yet refrain from opening up or they keep to theirself often. That’s good too, and sometimes emotionallty sound and many reallky can’t comprehend what another has gone threw. I mean, for starters, if im to use myself as a example, my Lord i painted a painting for Doctor Oz on Tv, it got wet in the flood too so i tried reduplicating it. This is something he hadn’t known that i was doing because he cares as he is a medical doctor. Well, the flood is one thing, when i went to sell the painting on line on craigslist that i wont be posting on any further after what i’ve gone threw, i posted my painting. someone sends me a text message. Oh, wonderful, someone wants to buy the painting. He stated he was going to mail the check, then once i deposite it to let him know then he sends this person called a mover to pick it up. i get the check. i went to deposite it, then the bank calls me a copule days later my accoubnt is over drawn not having enoughmoney to cover the bogus check i gave them that waqs sent to me that i thought was a honest check. Looked just like a really normal bankers check. The orginal bank employee couldnt tell the differance nor the investigators i had to taqlk to of where i got it from and ended up having them take pictures of everything. I tried recontacting the guy by text message the same form and way he wrote to me on my grandpa flip phone. When i wrote and statedx the check was bad and i had to pay money to get my account out of over draft, he never responded after that. Apparently there are professsional machines that can reduplicate documents to the same paper and same ink colors as documents made by professional places, i jsut happen to have become the victum. i found out its a federal crime to use the post office to trasfer bogus checks or to mail them much less defraud a company or corporation by illegally using their name to print checks from a professional printer. All, true stuff. Really is. Found out threw sources, the fbi, im not kidding, the same machines was being used to authenticate ballots that eiather get mailed to people or then are or were found at voting stations. I could believe that, i really could. I had gone threw the system of dealing with look alikes that ya just cant tell the differance at all. Thats proably why they put the security thread, thinthreads, in normal cash ya know because they found a way to prevent money from being duplicated in the same way. Me? i was just trying to find a way to sell a painting i made myself. It may be a hobby lobby canvass, i mean i didnt streach it like i did one for the business up the street wheni set my art easal inhis parking lot and painted a painting to resemble his building. It was a $10,000 dollar check. Why so much? i was told by a social society group if im going to paint begin at $2,500 per painting regardless what it is, yet if i capture something on behalf of people that are prodogetys like doctor oz or other famous people up the annie a bit and charge at leaast 10 grand. i took the advice. i listed the painting. the buyer turned out to be a fruad that was pinting checks using companys names at their free will and simulated their checks as it it is the same design of the checks per company ie some how that guy eaither a typyically hacked a company to see if they had a picture of their checks then downloaded it onto his own pc then sent it to his printer then printed it out all in the attempts to defraud all of the above.
          I write again later.
Yeah, ya did make my night. She really did too though when we went to the library, they modernized and it is a combonation of mother nature and a frank loyd right design of a building concept into a library, its had to explain. Its poetic being there.

      2. Nope. Didn’t donate it to a shelter. Protype inventions, meaning the 1st one’s, I usually keep the prototypes so I have something pass down to our kids that I just didn’t sit around doing nothing, I used time to create and make things that are useful, I have a few things I made in clothing and in wearable tech and a number of other things. i can’t get employed do to the type of injury I have and figured, hey wait a minute, if I use my time to make something that would be practical and affordable that everyone could use and benefit from then id be able to make a living, yet that requires an investor and capitol of which I lack either or. prayerfully something will come along. i have a invention, too, that would help every human being in their own home kitchen of saving space and saving time and severely lessening the amount of particles and germs in a kitchen the basic area where everyone is suppose to keep clean. Yet we’ve made our donations to shelters already, we usually do. Things that pertain to things I come up with or invent even if that is a tiny little blanket we keep those things as a moment for our kids to pass on to seer our accomplishments. And, one thing I did do, I really did study carbon emissions right from my own back yard and found some things the professionals missed, yet I’ve tried writing to them about what I found and offer a solvable solution to remedy the problem that isn’t just a quick fix it how a premise is built in construction and would need contractors to build. i know, ya don’t understand that part, yet I have to keep the invention of the construction of a working system to myself in a paper journal and not on line because it’s worth money and useful and pretty much I’m tired of being stolen from of intellectual property, it really had happened to me a couple times and my family and relatives know this and they know how steamed i am, so I have to not write on innovative concepts online. Ya kinda follow me there?

It’s nice to know that I have something on, but I don’t overthink what it is and how well it goes with any given outfit. Most of my jewelry is small and pretty universal, so it probably doesn’t really matter. Yet I feel almost “naked” if I don’t have earrings on.

    1. Welcome to the trail. Most of my earrings are dangly. I’ve always liked them dangly, I don’t know why. So wearing them for several days is out cause I can’t sleep on them!!

  20. Oh, these are beautiful! And I love how you’ve displayed them. They look like they just belong there. One of my favorite things about blogging is connecting with people, and I’m so glad I’ve been able to connect with you.
