Carried Away

I feel like a horse that has been let out of the barn after a long winter.

I had my first dinner party last night.  Not really a dinner party but my bff and her husband came over to grill.  (The small gathering that YA let me hold for her MBA graduation didn’t count as a real party since she placed so many restrictions on me.)  For this dinner, all the stops were let out; even by my standards, I got a little carried away.

You’re asking – how could she get carried away with grilling?  We had decided on Boca Burgers and corn.  Then YA said she didn’t really like Boca Burgers, could I get her Grillers (another veggie burger)?  And could we please have potato salad and coleslaw.  Then at the last minute I decided I really wanted veggie brats.  My girlfriend showed up with bread salad.  As we sat down for dinner, this is what else we had on the table:

  • Hamburger and hot dog buns
  • Catsup, yellow mustard, grey mustard, Miracle Whip, pickle reslish
  • Lettuce leaves, shredded lettuce
  • Sliced avocado
  • Slice white cheddar (for the burgers)
  • Sliced white onion, diced white onion
  • Caramelized onions
  • Sauteed mushrooms
  • Chopped jalapenos
  • Chopped cilantroa
  • Sliced tomatoes, diced tomatoes
  • Cotija cheese
  • Chopped scallions

To say this was on the table is a little misleading.  We actually pulled up the garden table for some of the overflow.  We had dessert as well: blender lemon pie with blueberry compote and whipped cream.

It was wonderful but as we were cleaning up, we had A LOT of leftovers. I just couldn’t help myself – after 18 months of only cooking for YA and myself, I just couldn’t stop.  I had actually thought about sauerkraut and Mexican corn as well, but ran out of time. And we had initially thought we would have chips and salsa as an appetizer, but as I was chopping and prepping I realized we didn’t need to fill up on chips before dinner with everything I was preparing.  Just as well, as everybody was stuffed by the end of the evening!

What’s the last thing you’ve gone overboard with?

  1. I’ll really have to think about that, as one who practices moderation in all things except :OT! Concerning my yesterday’s post about tomatoes. There are seemingly several baboons who grow tomatoes, all of whom will be too nice to say the obvious thing. If, by a long shot, my crop succeeds, the market will be flooded by cheap tomatoes. Prices will be severely depressed. To cut a long story short, I won’t let that happen. I’ll grind them down for cat feed or something. Please don’t worry.
But what is this about straw bales? I wondered what y’all used them for. You grow tomatoes in them? Huh?
I mean, of course, everybody knows that.

    1. Yes, welcome Liz. And if you figure out how to stop worrying about unnecessary stuff, can you please bottle whatever that is and send send me a case?

  2. We often go overboard when it comes to food. I noticed a local butcher shop had a leg of lamb on Saturday. Since it is hard to find lamb here, of course, I bought it. Do I have any plans to cook it in the near future? No, but at least I have it.

Husband received a dozen eggs from a friend who, for some reason, got 12 dozen eggs from a local farmer. I thought, “Oh, I’ll make quiche”. We decided on crab quiche. We bought a king crab leg. Most expensive quiche in town. It was delicious, though.

    1. I’ve actually forgotten how hot that is. But I know it’s hot. We have Centigrade or Celcius here, I don’t know what the difference is. We will often be seeing 40 now, till the end of August, on the thermometer on the panaderia front wall, which admittedly is right in the eye of the sun. I could check it against Fahrenheit on my phone, but still desperately trying to remain a technophobe. And I’ve forgotten the conversion formula, and too lazy to figure it out. I’m thinking Renee’s 102 could be even hotter than our 40.

  3. RIse and Shine Baboons,

This weekend I have been extravagantly socializing after these months and years of isolation. Saturday morning I was part of a Master Gardener gathering, then we went the Hopkins Raspberry Festival to see Chris and whatever else was there, and ate at a restaurant. WooHoo. Yesterday we picked up my niece and family at the Amtrak station, brought them home and fed them breakfast and heard all about their trip. (The dog was in dog heaven. Their two little kids spilled the breakfast all over the floor which allowed Bootsy a lucrative Crumb Patrol.). From 1-6pm my Art Circle friends gathered for the first time since October, 2019. We had our potluck meal and my first cherry pie of the season. It was so delicious and we could not stop talking.

    1. And a big shout out of thanks for coming to Hopkins and saying hi to me at my booth on Main Street to Jacque and her husband Lou, and Sherrilee and her lovely daughter, YA (since I can’t spell her real name–which is beautiful, btw–I won’t. That’ll help maintain her mystique. 😉

  4. Overboard Saturday with double header baseball at Dayton. Double sunburn. Double hot dogs. Double nachos. Double peanuts. Double beers (I lied).
    No salt. Just sodium.

  5. VS’s feast looked quite reasonable to me when I consider it from the standpoint of a burger bar where diners can pick and choose their toppings and sides. Of course, I’d try a little bit of everything and leave the dinner feeling like a beached whale.

I’m with Stewart on the “moderation in all things” philosophy. But as time implies, sometimes ya just gotta chuck moderation out the window and pig out on a dozen chocolate chip cookies.

  6. This about not going overboard—a quote from Fred Chappell in his book I Am One of You Forever: “I have had an elegant sufficiency of the numerous delicacies. Any more would be an unsophisticated superfluity, for gastronomic satiety admonishes me that I have reached the ultimate stage of deglutition consistent with dietetic integrity. ”

  7. Oh!!! Doesn’t this happen to anyone else? For at least the third time, I’ve deleted a lengthy comment. Maybe it’s WordPress that does it. At least YouTube lets me send them, then gets rid of them when I’m not looking.

  8. I suppose I’ve gone overboard in daylily rescues – people throw them out at the compost site and I keep picking them up and trying to find homes for them. A daylily is a beautiful thing; it simply needs a spot to get its roots into soil. Very drought tolerant. A humble, underappreciated bloom.

  9. OT: Latest in the saga is a new development: Husband is back in the hospital for a day or two, while we meet with a surgeon Tuesday to figure out if a feeding tube is what is needed, to get him back to nourishment and strength. His swallowing capacity has worsened over the past few weeks, and with the help of a dr. friend of mine who is visiting from Arizona, we got him admitted today.

I will probably set up a Caring Bridge site this week, where you’ll be able to find more detail. But tonight, know that I feel he’s in a safe place for the first time in weeks.

    1. So glad your friend from Arizona was able to help in this tangible way. It must be a great relief to you to know that he’s getting the medical help that he needs to get better. Thinking of you both.

  10. Barbara, I don’t know you, but your goodness and niceness has come across to me strongly. I’ve noticed, like everyone else I’m sure, how occupied you’ve been, just by your absence. Wish I could help you beyond the tears I’m shedding for you and your husband right now.
