Where in the World is VS?

It’s been awhile…… here are some clues.

The Botanical Garden, which opened to visitors here in 1859, is the oldest public garden in the US and among the top three public gardens in the world.

The first US kindergarten was started here in 1873 by Susan Blow.  (You can still see her original class room!)

The Eads Bridge, completed here in 1874, was the first arched steel truss bridge in the world. The bridge continues to carry automobiles, pedestrians, cyclists and light rail trains!

Several new foods were popularized here in 1904: the hot dog, the ice cream cone and iced tea.

Famous folks from here:  Maya Angelou, Yogi Berra, Daniel Boone, William Burroughs, Vincent Price, Stan Musial, Marlin Perkins.

  2. The hot dog and ice cream cone were, allegedly, popularized at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, but I thought the first kindergarten was in Watertown, Wisconsin.

    1. Apparently St Louisians have a fairly liberal definition of “from here”. If you’ve lived here, they claim you as their own!!

  4. I was going to say St. Louis – seem to remember the Eads bridge from when we visited in… wow, it was ’85, and Husband had a workshop there.

    VS – Are you there for work, or there to visit your mom (do I have that right?)

    Now the question’s been answered, we might need a new one?

    1. We are indeed visiting Nonny. It would be cruel and unusual punishment to send me to St Louis in the last two weeks of my career!!

  8. I remember a steel bridge in Cincinnati that has something special about it. So I was going to say you were there. But I know you have ties to St. Louis and everyone else would know more about it than me.

    Looked it up (courtesy Wiki): “The John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge, originally known as the Cincinnati-Covington Bridge, spans the Ohio River between Cincinnati, Ohio, and Covington, Kentucky. When opened on December 1, 1866, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world at 1,057 feet (322 m) main span,[2] which was later overtaken by John A. Roebling’s most famous design of the 1883 Brooklyn Bridge.”

  10. This morning we wondered where in the world Husband’s left hearing aid made off to. Our cat went on a tear in the middle of the night, knocking over things on dressers and counters, batting around paper balls. I found the hearing aid in the basement, where, presumably, she had carried it or batted it off his dresser, down the hallway, and then down the basement stairs into the family room
