Today is the anniversary of the debut of the CBS-TV variety show “Hee Haw” in 1969.
This program employed every possible rural stereotype. It defined “cornball” and “uncool”. Here’s a typical bit, made slightly more absurd by You Tube’s unfortunate misalignment of sight and sound.
I remember seeing this number done on the show when I was just 13 years old. Hee Haw was ridiculous in every possible way, but we howled at some of the jokes, and I admit I liked watching the Daisy Mae-like characters in their tight blouses and short shorts as they perched on hay bales.
And some legendary country musicians appeared on the show, including Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Merle Haggard.
Speaking of legendary musicians, also on this day, but in 1843, the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg was born in Bergen. What does he have in common with a goofy American TV show, aside from a fondness for rural themes? Not much. But put some overalls on him, and Grieg looks like he could have fit right into Kornfield Kounty.
I’ve heard that Grieg didn’t like his own composition, “In the Hall of the Mountain King”. He thought it was too commercial. I wonder what he would have thought of “Pickin’ an’ Grinnin'”?

My birthday is August 21. As far as I can tell little else of note has occurred on that day. Jim McMahon (former Bears QB and the late Princess Margaret, sister of Queen Elizabeth also share this birthday). And on the day I was born the Story County Iowa Fair was in full swing. My dad, the farmer/extension agent, loved the County Fair. He was inordinately pleased that I was born while this was going on.
That is it. The last of summer vacation is usually in full swing on my birthday. Several times the State Fair Morning Show was held on my birthday so we attended that to celebrate. Always a great way to spend my birthday.

Fun post, Dale! My mother loathed tv in general and Hee Haw in particular, but the brothers and I watched it anyway. I had to check out June and Johnny Cash doing that song as well as “Gloom, Despair, and Agony”, which has always put things in perspective for me (and takes the edge off of being the one who has to go to work on this first official day of summer vacation).
To answer the question-on my birthday, according to Wikipedia, Michelangelo’s David was unveiled, 3M began marketing Scotch tape, Star Trek premiered (original series, thank you very much), the Kennedy Center was inaugurated with Bernstein’s Mass (love that piece and worked there for 3 seasons) and Ford pardoned Nixon.
Then there is my personal favorite that makes me giggle everytime we start up a dvd-the international anti-piracy law that shows up at the beginning of every dvd was enacted on my birthday in 1977 (we particularly enjoy seeing that notice at the beginning of any of the Pirates of the Carribbean movies).
The year I was born, it looks like it was otherwise a pretty quiet day.

i was jusr talking hee haw with my wife the other day. my family grew up watching lawrence welk dick van dyke and the wonderful wold of disney as the sit arund the tv with a bowl of popcorn and have it roclamed tv night , hers did the same wth hee haw. she like dale comes from illinois farm stock . mst be somthing in the water over there.
last night was my 10 year olds birthday party. she was bummed because it was a full day with appointments and piano lessons topped off a couple of her sisters fastpitch softball games. grandma and aunt carolyn were coming for a dairy queen ice cream cake at 9 and an opening of the presents. it rained and all the family gathered at the bowling alley for a night of family bowling. it was a riot. ever done that before but what fun. present opening highlights were topped off with a demonstration of sims3 where we got to watch the 10 year old create a person a house and a life right before our very eyes. we were laughing so hard at some of the stuff that came up tears were rlling down our cheeks..aunt carolyn laughing so hard she was squeeking out “i can’t breathe” fun stuff

I have two answers. I was born June 12, 1942. At the time, the US Navy was reeling from the Pearl Harbor attack that took out half of the US fighting fleet. What was left of our navy was desperately running and trying to keep intact. But US decoders figured out the Japanese top secret code, learning in the process that the Japanese planned a massive attack on Midway Island. Using that precious secret, the US forces were able to spring a trap on the Japanese, a trap that ultimately resulted in a shocking defeat for the Japanese. Right there, in the beginning of the war, the Japanese losses were so heavy that Japan could never mount a credible long range sea attack again. The tilt toward a US victory had begun.
And yet something at least as large happened that day. A Jewish girl in the Netherlands turned 13. Among the gifts Anne Frank received was an autograph book that she began immediately using as a diary, offering heart-felt observations to “Kitty” (her name for the book). She wrote in that first day: “I hope I will be able to confide everything to you, as I have never been able to confide in anyone, and I hope you will be a great source of comfort and support.” You know the rest.

On April 27, 1943 the situation in the Anne Frank household was getting worse. Everyone was angry with everyone else, and lunch consisted of spinach or lettuce along with rotting potatoes. Goes to prove the old Danish adage: “Når krybben er tom, bides hestene,” loosely translates to “when the trough is empty, the horses bite at each other.”
Also on that day the Boston Red sox defeated the New York Yankees at Fenway Park. Sorry I can’t give you the score, but I have no idea how to read the box score. Otherwise that particular April day seems to have been pretty uneventful.

Good morning to all:
I don’t pay much attention to the dates of varoius things like the dates when people are born. With a little research I found out that I have the same birth day as Charlie Sheen. We were both born on the third of September. From what I know about Charlie, I would guess he also doesn’t pay much attention to when birth days occur. I think both Charlie and I are free spirited people who live our lives with out much regard for things like birth dates.

My folks (especially my Dad) LOVED Hee-Haw. Being an angsty teenager, I had nothing but contempt for it. Even now, when visiting my folks and we happen to find a re-run on CMT, you can actually hear my eyes roll. But I’m more patient than I used to be. And I have a greater appreciation for people like Buck Owens, Roy Clark, and leggy blondes in short skirts and unbuttoned, midriff-tied flannel shirts. Even my appreciation for Junior Samples has grown…that poor guy was treading water as fast as he could… (“BR-549”).

I remember watching Hee Haw too. My favorite part was the ‘Empty Arms Hotel’.
I found a 10th anniversary DVD of Hee Haw that I bought for the family. They were not amused…
I was born on Mothers Day and Mom got some extra goodies for that occasion. Lots of musicians / artsy types born on May 10. Fred Astaire, Bono, Dave Mason, David O. Selznick and Nancy Walker among others.
Then there was the completion of the transcontinental railroad and that whole golden spike thing. But in 1964 all I could find was: “a new study has linked smoking to an increase in Heart Attack for the first time , the study shows that blood clots faster after smoking . The findings were announced by The American Cancer Society.”
So don’t smoke.

On March 20, 1916 Albert Einstein published his general theory of relativity. That’s pretty noteworthy. And in 1987, the Food and Drug Administration approved the anti-AIDS drug, AZT. “Revolver” was released by the Beatles the month before I was born. I share a birthday with Sophia Loren and Jelly Roll Morton (though some place his birthday in October, not on 9/20). Apparently I also share a birthday with Gunnar and Matthew Nelson of “Nelson” pop fame…though I am a year older. If I can believe Wikipedia, Saladin began his siege of Jerusalem about 780 years before I was born, but on my birthday, and in 1633 Galileo was tried by the church for teaching that the earth revolves around the sun. Oh, and on my 7th birthday, Billy Jean King beat Bobby Riggs in tennis in their “Battle of the Sexes.” We shall ignore George W’s gift that keeps on giving – the declaration that started “the war on terror.” A gift I’d rather return, thankyouverymuch.

When I worked in the hospital I shared my birthday with one of the obstetricians. Outwardly he and I were quite different (he threw phones when he was mad). One of my colleagues used to say, “Makes it hard to believe in the zodiac, doesn’t it?” As I matured I realized that under the crusty exterior , he was quite impressive and I re-embraced the wisdom of the zodiac.

BIR, I love the probability exercise. However, I think there is a flaw in their logic. The equation assumes that the probability that a person will be born on a certain day is the same no matter the day (excluding Feb 29).But some days are actually more likely. 9 months after St Patrick’s Day, Christmas, New Year’s, and major blackouts are more likely. 9 months after the hottest day in August is less likely. The temperature differences were more obvious before air conditioning and are still obvious in Amish populations.The ethnicity of the random people also matters both in terms of significant holidays and likelihood of multiple births skewing expected distributions.In case it isn’t obvious to new baboons not only am I obnoxious but I have a job that involves keep track of trends among the average 200 babies born every day in Minnesota.

October 3, 1956, the Dodgers beat the Yanks, 6-3, in the opening game of the World Series and if that doesn’t blow your mind, Paul Newman was the guest on I’ve Got a Secret. And get this! The year I turned 39, O.J. was acquitted.
Today’s date is significant because it’s my son’s swearing-in ceremony for the NY Bar, and also because I’m having my gutters replaced and one of the workers looks like Charles Manson!!

Can everyone stand another animal story or two? Well, here there are anyway.
I’ve got two interesting chicken stories. One chicken was sitting on a nest of eggs in an isolated building. She hatched out 6 chicks and I opened the door for her to come out but she has been very happy keeping family there. I’ve given her water and feed and there’s enough dirt, material and straw on the floor they seem to be very happy pecking and living in there. And it’s safer than being outside. I guess she’s a smart momma.
Another hen, same breed as the first chicken curiously (Black Australorp), she’s trying to sit on eggs in a nest box but I come around every day and collect her eggs. She’s getting madder and madder at me. Tonight I took her eggs and she comes out of that box tail up, wings down and dragging (making herself look bigger) and runs around me, over my egg basket circles around and then charged out the door — right over our little dog Allie, who to her credit, didn’t try to kill that crazy chicken.

Don’t laugh! I’ve seen a documentary film where chickens did JUST that to escape a sort of concentration camp that was turning them into pies.
