Great Nations

It took me by surprise when I learned that Monday is Columbus Day – the observance has completely fallen off my IHR (Internal Holiday Radar), a sixth sense that triggers the release of euphoric chemicals that flood the body when a day off is about to happen.

That’s probably because I’ve worked every Columbus Day since I was in the sixth grade. I would have missed it entirely this year had I not found myself in a conversation about what might or might not come in the mail next week. I admire their work, but the people of the U.S. Postal Service are the last ones to know when a holiday falls out of favor.

It’s pretty obvious that on the October holiday/observance landscape, Columbus Day is on the decline while Halloween continues, ominously, to rise. Though if you’re Native American, Columbus Day IS Halloween – a chilling reminder of the closeness of death.

Randy Newman summed it all up in this song, performed in Stuttgart.

http://youtu.be/ua0pR06pevU

Not a huge ovation, but the Germans in the audience have likely become accustomed to the complicated feelings that accompany true accounts of European history. But you have to credit Mr. Newman for boiling it all down to the essence.

Here’s a list of days off for federal workers from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management:

Friday, December 31, 2010 – New Year’s Day
Monday, January 17 – Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Monday, February 21 – Washington’s Birthday
Monday, May 30 – Memorial Day
Monday, July 4 – Independence Day
Monday, September 5 – Labor Day
Monday, October 10 – Columbus Day
Friday, November 11 – Veterans Day
Thursday, November 24 – Thanksgiving Day
Monday, December 26 – Christmas Day

With so much pressure in Washington for the government to save money, how long before someone proposes a schedule of unpaid holidays to go hand-in-hand with the elimination of Saturday mail delivery? Anything to get those federal employees off the clock! We have lots of candidates. Here are some in October alone:

International Day of Older Persons ―Saturday, October 1, 2011
International Day of Non-Violence ― October 2
World Habitat Day ― October 3
World Teachers’ Day ― October 5
World Post Day ― October 9
World Mental Health Day ― October 10
International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction ― October 12
World Sight Day ― October 13
White Cane Safety Day ― October 15
International Day of Rural Women ― October 15
World Food Day ― October 16
International Day for the Eradication of Poverty ― October 17
Boss’s Day ― October 17
Alaska Day ― October 18
World Development Information Day ― October 24
United Nations Day ― October 24
World Day for Audiovisual Heritage ― October 27
Nevada Day ― October 28

How wonderfully ironic it would be to force people to take a day without pay to observe the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty!

What holidays would you like to add to the calendar?

  1. Everybody who has been up most of the night raise your hands.
Dale, if you still lived in New York, you would not be allowed to forget Columbus Day. It is a BIG DEAL out there, especially in Massachusetts, where it is a national holiday in every way. What it is is the Italian version of St. Pat’s Day.
I have argued for years to dump Saturday mail. It would save a lot of money. How much mail do you receive that matters any more? How much mail you get on Saturday cannot wait until Monday?
I want to add National Insomniacs Day. Wait, that would be National Insomniacs Night.

Just a fairly average night of insomnia for me…I try to not look at my clock too much when I can’t sleep but I caught a glimpse of it at 3:15 and I think I fell asleep shortly after that.

      1. i think once you start in a life of crime you need to stick with your signature so the pilot that flew the drugs out of puerto rico should be rretained and the use of the crystal airport is a good idea with a transport to the library for distribution but what pidgeon will you nail this time.since you have a distribution network setup with the meds for the swine flu maybe you should see if your contact at the pharmacutical house can orchestrate a tainted batch of flu vaccine so that it will be in super short supply there by quadrupling the valus of the predated vaccine you have stockpiled in refrigeration warehouses acrossthe midwest. you will likely target the elderly and pregnant who will be at the greatest risk. that or get into counterfiting dinosaur bones with the new carbon dating techniques developed by the same chemist who cranks out the swine flu vaccine. its really hard to do dinosaur bones on the bus though. you decide.

She was a real problem for the church, noted for her unbridled fits of levitation and disruption of church services. She is the patron saint of therapists and people suffering from mental illness.

and couldn’t you just go on and on
the post office should have an area where you can pick up you mail on these off days and there could be overtime pay for sorting mail on these new holidays. but these are not paid holidays any more. we need to cut back so the post office delivers on the off days . with this slist we still have 100 days of delivery left but i a sure i have forgotten a few. cmon lets not forget any important people worth celebrating and days and events like the day we withdrew from vietnam, veterans day kind of incorporated all wars and i think they should in fact be celebrated or remembered seperately, each war has its own lesson to learn and circumstances to point to. sing of world war 2 in germany is a perfect example. all you germans out there know how in your face that is and would liek to avoid the discussion again. thats how we do it , by having the next generation be given the inside scoop on what was right or wrong with this picture. what are the great dates , great people moments to be recalled and plugged in?
    nice dale!

      2. oh rats, i was going to plant bulbs today,, too, and it has been too warm here. but i wanted to plant them before i planted the perennials that are going to be intermingled with them, because otherwise i have to dig up the perennials to plant the bulbs. and with they way things are going it will be too warm to plant them until we get days of sleet and highs of 34 and lows of 10. I do so want it to cool off (to good bulb planting weather) and a little rain would be appreciated, too.

  11. This will be the first Columbus Day we’ve not had off (although in SD it’s called Native American Day) for as long as I can remember. Last year a committee of parents went to the school board and complained about the early start in August. Their wish was granted. This year, instead of starting on Aug. 15, school began Aug. 22. Last year, school started Aug. 16 and finished May 17. This calendar year, students’ last day is May 15. How can this be, you ask? The district agreed to the later start, only to remove an equal number of vacation days. Swell.

I’m going to take a walk now to hopefully subdue the contempt I have at the moment for my masters.

  15. I am in favor of several of these holidays – especially World Waffle Day. If World Waffle Day could coincide with International Peanut Butter Day, that would be grand. I am also a fan of the notion of having a day of reading (or three).

Is Shel Silverstein on any of the lists yet? He should have a day, too. I also firmly believe that there should be a grand celebration of National Punctuation Day with comma parades, a presentation of the semicolon and em-dash guard, and finishing with an exclamation point ball.

(For the record – as a good Norwegian, I have a hard time with calling it Columbus Day, and prefer Explorer’s Day to celebrate Leif Erickson and all the others who found their way here – after all, Columbus did use a Viking map. 🙂 )
