Mailbox Euphoria

I’m guessing that I care more about mailboxes than your average Joe.  I’ve done the math and on average, I send out a card every day.  Most days when I send something, I just leave it at my mailbox for the mail carrier to take.  But quite often, if I have three or more cards to send in one day, I like to drop them at the post office.  Seems safer and easier on the mail carrier.

Drive-up mailboxes are my preference, since it’s meant to be a quick errand (usually in the midst of a list of errands) and that means Richfield or Nicollet.  But I’m fussy (I know, you’re shocked, right?)  The Nicollet box is curbside but on the right side of the street, so I have to get out of the car to put the envelopes in.  That leaves Richfield as my drop-off point of choice.

To my shock and horror, early last spring, they removed the three drive up boxes!  There was a note on the post office door explaining that they were taken out due to the road repair that was taking place.  The note did ensure that the boxes would be replaced when the roads were finished.  Considering all the problems in the world, this wasn’t the biggest deal, but it was a pain in my patoot.  The road near the post office seemed finished up to me in early fall but the mailboxes didn’t come back AND the note about the boxes was gone as well.

I’d pretty much resigned myself to always having to get out of the car to put something in the mailbox until two weeks ago, when I turned the corner into the Richfield lot… AND THERE THEY WERE… all three of them in the same spot they were before.  You would have thought I’d won the lottery – it made my day!

Any small happinesses in your world to report?

  1. Our grandson loved making krumkake last weekend. By the time we were done, he could roll them quite expertly.

Yesterday the workers came to put new doors and baseboards in the basement. It won’t be long before the new carpet can go in and we will have full use of the basement.

      1. I didn’t officially sign up for that Whamageddon game but I did hear about it. You have to get through the holiday season without hearing Santa Baby. Apparently it’s a little cutthroat. But I am glad I can turn on a couple of my stations now without the risk of hearing it!

  2. Our mail was actually delivered yesterday. Mail delivery is sporadic here due to the post office prioritizing Amazon deliveries over delivering first class mail. I was happy to see Senator Klobuchar weighing in on this for us and northern MN. It has been better since she did.

  3. Yesterday I got a Natonal Greograhical rock tumbler to polish agates I collected in the 1970’s. I was inspired after receiving a polished agate from a friend for Christmas.

  4. This just makes me laugh, VS. These little things that cause me to laugh make my day.

I don’t get on Facebook every day, but if I get a good out-loud laugh or snort, that is a small happiness. Just saw one that says “Accept yourself for the dumpster fire that you are.”

  5. I’m happy the holidays, with all their noise and expectations, are over.

I’ve decided to trade my Rav in for a Corolla hatchback. It will get much better gas mileage and it will be easier for me to load the kayak for more kayaking next summer. My Rav is getting older and, love it as I do, it’s a machine and machines wear out.

I’m starting a knitting class next week.

  6. Rise and Feel the Joy, Baboons,

We acquired a “Little Free Library” this fall, and it is up and dispensing books in our neighborhood. It makes me happy to see it at the end of our sidewalk. It makes me even happier when I see the neighbor kids looking through it and putting books in it. I think there have been some adults out there, as well. When we host Blevins this month, book readers can bring a book to contribute if you want to.

We also put National Geographic issues out there, but so far none are gone.

  7. I painted half the basement stairs yesterday—only half so that I wouldn’t be trapped in the basement. I’ll paint the other half today. It was particularly satisfying because I had a bit of difficulty getting the new paint to cover the old. After sanding the stairs and using a deglosser, the new, different kind of floor paint from the floor paint I had been trying to use went on perfectly.

Also I cut out the pieces for a new cowboy shirt. I hadn’t necessarily planned on making any more of them right away but I didn’t have any other fun projects on the horizon and I had found fabric for the shirt body that ideally complemented the decorative yoke, so now I want it to be a shirt and not just pieces of fabric.

  8. I made it through the holidays without catching anything. Last year on the Tuesday after Christmas I came down with a cold. Glad it was just a cold.

This year some family members, the youngest ones included, were sick with something at Thanksgiving, but I escaped it.

    I’m hoping my streak continues.

  9. Greetings from Taiwan, where on a wander around the neighborhood I discovered that my favorite post office has been converted to a self service kiosk! This sort of vandalism has to stop. Things should not change!
