Much Ado About the Birthday

Today is YA’s birthday.  A whooping 29 years old today!!

YA is one of those folks who likes a little fuss but doesn’t like to admit they want a fuss.  This is hard for me because #1: I love making a fuss and #2: when you don’t want to admit to wanting fuss, then you don’t admit to what you actually want.  I have to figure what she MIGHT like and not go beyond that!

The first thing we have is a banner that says “Happy Birthday” that I made a few years ago; I hang it up across the arch between the dining room and living room.  I added two big balloons, one on each end of the arch.  A “2” and a “9”.  (YA’s dog Guinevere is twenty years younger than YA so we will keep the “9” for the end of the month!).  That’s it for décor.

Goodies are harder.  Most of the time YA is not a cookies/cake/cupcake kind of person. Most of the time.  But you can’t count on her birthday being a day that she’s in the mood.  She does however like brownies most of the time – as long as they don’t have frosting… so I can make those.  I have two big candles (again a “2” and “9”).  I did get a can of cream cheese frosting so I can write “Happy Birthday” on the brownies.  That will be OK with her.

For a gift, she’s saving up for a new laptop so there is a giftcard for her.  Not exactly original but it’s what she really wants.  She is fairly particular about what she wears, so I would never buy her clothing. I can never guess what she might like to read so no books.  Between us we got four jigsaw puzzles for the holidays so that’s out.  Giftcard it will be.

All this fuss will be set up during the day while YA is at work so she’ll come home to the fun.  Hopefully I will have gotten the fuss to non-fuss ration correct!

What kind of birthday fuss to you like?

  1. No fuss for me either. It’s really just another day. I do like to go out for lunch with someone but it doesn’t have to be on my birthday – just whatever day works.

I have knitting class and music group today, all at FiftyNorth. It will feel like being in high school without the hormones.

  2. No fuss, no muss for me either. That makes it unanimous here on the comments! 🙂

I do think about the milestone of the passing year and how much faster each year seems to have gone over the past 20 or so. I’m sure we all remember our school days when the school year (9 months) seemed to last for nine years, and summer (3 months) seemed to last for three days! I wouldn’t mind having a few of those school years given back to me so I can get some stuff done!

**BSP** Meet the Author (me!) at the Robert Trail Library in Rosemount tomorrow (TH) at 6:30 pm. Sopnsored by the Rosemount Area Arts Council. RAAC is a vibrant arts advocate that deserves our support because it promotes all artists no matter their genre or medium.

It’ll be an informal chat, but I’ll do a short PowerPoint presentation to talk about my new book, “Little Mountain, Big Trouble.”

FWIW, the book is “moving up the charts” in the Chanticleer Reviews Gertrude Warner Middle Grade Fiction Awards. I just made the semifinals, which means I’ve survived four levels of scrutiny so far. 🙂 But still lots of competition to overcome. No expectations, but it’s always nice to get validation of quality from trained, impartial sources. **END BSP**

      1. I’ve only read her book “Quarry Girls.” I didn’t love it, but it was well written. She writes the kinds of crime/mystery books that get awards because she’s nabbed a few big ones.

But yes, there are quite a few quality mystery writers in this state. Maybe it’s due to annual brain freeze. 🙂

  3. Well I guess I have to “un-unanimous” us. I love a fuss. I collect up as many freebie coupons as I can and use them up for days before and after my birthday. Love to go out for breakfasts, lunches, etc around the big day as well. Every few years I have a big backyard party although I never bill it as a birthday bash… just a fun summer party. While I like a fuss, I don’t need a big pile of gifts!

      1. I agree! VS, I’m trying to remember what you called her before she was 18 – was it Darling Daughter? I remember MiG called her son the “S&H” and Anna called her daughter Miss S.

  4. Rise and Shine, Baboons,

I like to go out for a really good meal at a great restaurant (last August it was Italian Eatery in S. Mpls–wonderful) with people I love then have a really delicious sweet desert. I do not want a surprise party. Life has provided enough surprises and I do not want any more of them.

  5. I like a little bit of fuss. At this point dinner out is a rare occurrence so that would do it, and whenever it works out – doesn’t have to be on The Day.

we threw a party for my 39th birthday, at our York Ave. house in S. Mpls. at the time. It was fun, but I said even then it was the last birthday party I was having, and then I could stay 39.

  6. No muss, no fuss here either. One of my best friends has an October birthday and mine is December. We split the difference and meet for supper sometime in November. Applebee’s is our tradition – not so much for the food as for the Triple Chocolate dessert (also known as lava cake). We split one since it is so big.

With a birthday during holiday concert time, I have spent several birthdays at the piano accompanying choir concerts. That’s how I “celebrated” my most recent birthday. For my 60th, the music teachers at one of the middle schools hosted a “surprise” birthday party for me during the school day – 2 sheet cakes and celebrating with each of the choirs. I must admit, that was fun but don’t care for any more of those kind of surprises.

  7. OT – today is six weeks post ankle surgery. I can now start some weight bearing as long as I’m wearing the boot – woohoo! I’ve already taken a short walk around my condo using a walker instead of the knee scooter. I don’t put full weight on the affected leg yet but it’s progress (and pain free)! Can driving be too far away???

  8. I like to celebrate my birthday in a low key fashion without a lot of fuss. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner at favorite restaurants, not all on the same day, with good friends is a good way. It might also be a day when I treat myself to a pedicure, a full body massage, or some such pampering. At this stage of my life, I don’t feel like I need to justify treating myself to experiences that give me pleasure, and enjoying a special meal or a concert with a good friend is right up there.

    Happy birthday to YA.

  10. Fuss update. She did seem to enjoy the little bit of fuss when she got home. Made a wish and blew out the candles. Then relit the candles so she could take a picture. Then she asked if we could do some of the Christmas crackers that we had left in the cabinet!

        1. I will admit to Moose Tracks. It’s a little bit of swirls of fudge and little teeny tiny peanut butter cups a mixed in the vanilla.
