Let Them Eat King Cake

I saw a funny story online yesterday about a thief who stole seven King cakes from a bakery in New Orleans.  Cash and a case of vodka were also taken.  That’s a heck of a party someone is planning.

Growing up, while I had heard of Mardi Gras, I had never heard of a king cake.  Even working in bakeries for four years after I got married, I still never heard of it.  It was the travel industry that finally introduced this pastry to me – every year a king cake was delivered to the travel division from a supplier in New Orleans.

The Bittersweet Confections king cake must be fabulous.  While the green, purple and yellow colors are bright and it’s fun to see who ends up with the plastic baby that is often baked into the cake, I’ve never thought king cake was the best use of butter, sugar and flour.  A little too sweet and sticky for my taste.  But a staple of the holiday it is and I suppose if I lived in New Orleans, or celebrated Mardi Gras, I would learn to make them.  Maybe I could make a version I like a little better??

Suppose you’re breaking into a bakery?  What would you take?

  1. In order, I’d go for the eclairs, chocolate covered doughnuts, cream puffs, and caramel pecan rolls.

I’d fill out my loot bag with custard bismarks, turnovers, and croissants. Oh hell, who am I kidding? I’d back up a pickup truck and take every last morsel. It’s a bakery, for God’s sake. If you’re going to steal, steal big! 🙂

    1. In the movie”Chocolate’ they find the town royal passed out in the front window of the Chocolatierre after he breaks into the shoppe and binges. Maybe you could just pass out in the front like that.

  2. If it was a fancy French bakery they might have bottles of Calvados for apple tarts. I still have pounds of fresh yeast in the freezer, so maybe I would bring about half if what I have and leave it at the bakery and take butter in its place.

  3. I’ve had a taste of King Cake once, many years ago. I can’t remember who made it. It might have been ordered.

I like cream cheese croissants. Those would be my first grab. Followed by those cream-filled things, but I’m not sure what they’re called. Popovers. Chocolate doughnuts. Scones and coffee.

  4. Rise and Shine Baboons,

What a question! In my home town there is a locally famous Dutch bakery called Vander Meer’s Bakery. During the COVID years the bakery owners decided to retire and sold it to an Irish Catholic family which owns food business, the Mullallys. This is kind of a local heresy. The Vander Meers are of a very strict Dutch Reformed Christian faith–no dancing, drinking or cards. The Mullallys do all of those forbidden things. But they bought the bakery and the recipes, promising that they will keep the bakery as it was.

If I was going to break into a bakery it would be that one. They had some Dutch pastries that were delicious, but my favorite treat was the bags of buttermilk donuts. As a tall skinny teen with a voracious appetite, I ate dozens of those. There was just the right flavor and texture.

I don’t know much about King Cakes, but I am with Bill on this one–it doesnot look appealing.

  5. Depends on the bakery – if it’s our Bloedow’s, I’d take the macaroon cookies.
But I’d rather pick an Italian one that would have Cannolis, or a Middle Eastern one for the Baklava… let’s just create an international bakery that will also have Rum Baba… Piroshki…

  6. A friend of ours moved to the iron range from Iowa. She could not figure out why figure out why some bakeries were selling pasties, which she pronounced PAY-sties until someone explained.

  7. King Cake doesn’t look remotely appealing to me. If I were to raid a bakery, the first items to go would be glazed raised doughnuts, chocolate frosted raised doughnuts, raspberry & cream filled Bismarks, maple frosted long johns, and cinnamon rolls (must be fresh).

OT – I am now out of the boot and into a fussy ankle brace (laces and velcro straps that crisscross). I can walk unaided but occasionally use a cane. PT started last week – my ankle is quite stiff, especially flexion. Swelling is still an issue, making it hard to find any shoes to fit over the brace but one pair of tennis-like hiking shoes work as do clogs. Compression socks help quite q bit as well. I have 3 more PT sessions plus as 2 acupuncture sessions before I leave on my big trip. I won’t be Speedy Gonzales but at least I don’t have to take/wear the boot!

  8. I’d go for the chocolate chip cookies first. Then brownies, if they’re moist. I’m not a big fan of cake, but I say that meaning most cakes I’ve had are kinda dry. If it’s moist enough they’re OK.
But like Chris, I’m headed to the donuts after the cookies. 🙂

  9. At one of my former workplaces, we were sent a King cake once. I got the baby. I think I may still have the baby somewhere. That’s unfortunate, because my understanding is that the recipient of the baby is supposed to bake the cake the following year. I fell down on the job.

  10. My dr was going to call me with pathology report which he assured me was going to be cancer free. His office called 3 hours to set up a video conference on 2/15. That is when I will now get the results. What conclusion should I draw?

  12. If I broke into a bakery I wouldn’t take very much, as baked goods should be consumed fresh. If you’re going to break into a retailshop, you’d do better to put your energy into more shelf-stable goods.

In a bakery, perhaps I’d look for their sourdough starter. But I wouldn’t take all of it. Just enough to start my own. Then I’d check to see if they had some high quality baking chocolate and cocoa. Those would keep. Then I’d take one baguette, one fruit danish, and a brownie.
