New Holidays

I don’t think there are many Baboons who work full-time any longer for an agency or some other entity. As a State employee I sure appreciated having yesterday off. I really needed a three day weekend. I didn’t get as much done as I wanted, but it was very nice to sleep in on Saturday and Monday. Sunday was an early day ringing bells in church for three hours, but it was nice to take a nap when we got home.

North Dakota still gives State employees Good Friday off. I don’t know if there are many other states that do. That means that I have another three day weekend in March. I imagined what other days in April, June, and August I could suggest to the powers that be to consider for three day weekends. May and July are covered already with July 4th and Memorial Day.

For April we could have the 23rd off in honor of Shakespeare’s Birthday. June 16th could be a day off for Bloomsday, as long as State employees read Ulysses aloud. August 23 would be a great day to celebrate the opening of the first one-way streets in London in 1617. The Transportation Department would support that one!

What Monday or Friday holidays would you like to see?

  1. Rise and Shine, Baboons,

I started my private practice 20 years ago. I have noticed that since doing that, working outside of a bureaucracy, I hardly noticed holidays. I just worked when I wanted to, then took time off when I wanted to. So I am not in any state of mind to think about what holidays I want. Retirement has furthered that way of thinking. When it comes to holidays I just don’t care, unless a store I wanted to shop at is closed.

Without this question, I never would have realized that.

OT, Lou has a pinched nerve in his lower back for the second time in 10 months, which is acutely painful. He will start (restart, really) PT later today which in the long term will help. Does any BAboon have experience with this and any suggestions?. He has a muscle relaxer and a mild narcotic pain reliever which help a little. Drs have cut back on pain medications, which is good practice. But Lou is in pain while this passes. He cannot tolerate steroid treatment, so that is out.

    1. PT is the answer. I am dealing with sciatica right now due to my lumbar scoliosis. It just started a couple of weeks ago. I had PT fir it years ago and I am resurrecting some of those exercises.

    2. I agree that PT is the answer. Try a mild heat for 15 minutes, then off, then do it again hourly. That might help relax the muscles around the area, which tend to tense up and worsen the pain.

  2. I have a shredded lumbar including pinched nerves. They tried injections, but they only lasted less than a week so that’s it. They cannot do them again. I did do a narcotic on a limited basis but then that got shut down. It helped. Traction helped for awhile. I had two laminectomies. Helped abit. My surgeon said they were done. Nothing more could be done. I go through bouts of PT. Use Excedrin a lot. My migraine pills help a bit.but I mostly live with it. I have this circus in my lower body of which joint is going to feel like it is falling apart when they are all solid except my right knee which is strained. Sometimes all of a sudden I can feel on the bottom of my feet, which is very weird. After my five weeks of being unable to do PT while they looked for cancer they weren’t going to treat when they did find it, I can barely walk or stand. So I am going back to my wonderful physical therapist for a new round. I do walk most days again at our wonderful indoor padded track, but it hurts like hell. But 25 minutes at best when two months ago I could pain my way to 40. Meditation helps a bit. Been living with this for about 18 years now. I wish him luck. lots of people find relieve with surgeries, injections, ablations. I did not.

  3. I had yesterday off too as the college was closed. And this morning I was thinking, there’s nothing else until Memorial Day! Heck!

There is spring Break, but I’m still on a schedule, and we have a vacation coming up, but that will involve a conference so not much sleeping in there either. But at least it won’t be not sleeping here!

  4. Hans mentioned this morning that the troubles he has been having with his right wrist has become worse. He gets sudden sensations of a stabbing pain. I suggested that perhaps it’s time to see his doctor, to which he replied: “Yeah, I just thought it would go away on its own.” I told him that it has been my experience that after age 75, things don’t get better on their own. On the contrary, leave them alone long enough, and everything falls apart.

However bad his wrist problem is, he headed off to play pickleball five minutes later. I think he’ll live.

  5. OT – The picture on our TV is breaking up something fierce. It started months ago, is sporadic, but seems to have gotten worse. Hans insists that it’s an antenna problem, and that the “signal” is weak, but I’m wondering if there’s something wrong with the TV itself. The TV is a flatscreen “smart” TV (whatever that is) and about six or seven years old. Any ideas or thoughts?

    1. I’ve never had a smart TV, so I’m not sure how helpful I can be. One thing to think about, though….does the video freeze/go dark/display a No Signal message and the audio drops out at the same time? If there is an antenna problem, you should get video and audio dropouts at the same moment. If the audio drops out, but you can still see the picture move, like a person moving their lips without hearing what they’re saying, that would suggest it’s something else.

Also, do you have a DVD or VCR connected to the TV, and if so, is the playback affected?

    2. Check the attachment to the antannae to be certain it did not loosen. Otherwise google it or ask Youtube to show you a video about “Smart TV picturebreaking up”. There are amazing things on YouTube, many which I never wanted to know.

    3. Is it every channel or just a few? These days, with digital TV signals, we don’t get the ‘snow’ or static like we got when we were kids; the picture breaks up into squares or freezes when the signal is weak. We have an antenna too, and it only freezes like that if the signal gets bad. And only a few channels. Good point to check the connection.

      1. Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. Hans has checked all the connections, and they seem fine, so he has ordered a new antenna. Hope that solves the problem.

      2. The trouble is on all the channels, but we don’t have cable so it’s just the basic ones. Weather does seem to be a factor, though it went completely haywire this afternoon for no apparent reason.

  6. Earth Day falls on a Monday this year. It would be a good day to do something nice for the earth. I might go on a garlic mustard-pulling expedition or clean up some storm drains.

  7. As a long time state employee, I always wished for a holiday between Presidents Day and Memorial Day. The state of Minnesota doesn’t consider Easter a holiday, which is fine with me, but my birthday is in April and I’d like to consider that a holiday!
