Glitter And Be Gay

Last weekend, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, one of our employees came into our building and spread gold glitter all over-in the elevator, in all the hallways on both floors, in our offices, and on our desks along with green paper shamrocks and candy. Whoever it was had a master key to get into all the offices. Administration has been oddly silent, so I think it was one of them who did it..

All I could think was how awful for the cleaning staff to try to vacuum up all the handfuls of glitter that were strewn all over. The glitter has spread everywhere. One of my colleagues took her work laptop to a meeting at a local elementary school, and when she opened it up, glitter spilled out onto the table they were all meeting at. We are even carrying it into the community! After a couple of days for the cleaners to vacuum you can still see it in the carpet. Husband had some on his face at lunch yesterday.

For some reason Leonard Bernstein ‘s Candide came to mind when I saw all the glitter

What are some of your favorite Bernstein works? What is the biggest mess you ever made?

  1. Once glitter has been “released” into the environment, it is there to stay. The people in charge of cleaning your office space will be vacuuming it up for years. Besides that, it is an environmental menace. It’s basically micro-plastics that small animals will ingest. Sorry.

I did this once for a Halloween party. I was Glenda the Good Witch, and I tossed small sprays of multi-colored glitter everywhere in a friend’s home. I don’t think she has ever forgiven me. I think back on it and I wish I had known better.

I liked the music from West Side Story, especially “Maria” and “Tonight.”

“This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.” ~Leonard Bernstein.

  2. I burned a pot of black beans. It cost a bundle to dry clean the hanging clothes and rent air purifiers. My insurance might have helped but it would have been a wash what with deductible. Thankfully, this happened pre-Birds. The stink might have killed them.

Of course, West Side Story but also New York, New York from On The Town. But what would the music be without the fabulous lyrics?! I’m going to take a closer look at Bernstein’s role in the collaborations.

  3. RIse and Shine Baboons,

When Lou fell last WEdnesday he fell into a shelf of houseplants, including a spiny cactus. That was a real mess and I am still finding bits of dirt and pots.

I always loved playing the Candide score by Bernstein. Interesting syncopation. I watched part of the “Maestro” movie and did not like it at all, despite all the rave reviews.

  4. West Side Story, hands down. One of the great compositions of the 20th Century.

Biggest mess? Hmmm, none come to mind. That means I’ve only made thousands of little messes (ask my wife–she’s the patient soul who cleans up after I’ve made a “fancy” dinner), or the biggest mess was so big that I repressed the memory so it won’t torment me.

  5. And I forgot about the messes – one of the biggest recently was when I tried a corned beef brisket in the crockpot – removing the fat and trying to slice it after cooking. I do this every few years after I’ve forgotten what it’s like…

  6. Well, everyone can get a good laugh at me for this one. When I read Renee’s questions this morning, my first thought was “oh, I love that Hallelujah song”. Decided to listen to it on youtube and very quickly realized that I had the wrong Leonard! This has led me to listening to Hallelujah REPEATEDLY today. Down to two favorites: kd lang and Pentatonix.

  7. About 6 years or so ago (maybe longer), the shelf above my desk in my studio came crashing down off the wall with all of it’s bins. Two of the bins were paper scraps that didn’t have lids. One bin was full of assorted beads and lost it’s lid upon impact. Took me about a week to get it cleaned up. Shelving is now anchored. I found little beads every now nad then for a few years.

  8. loved Kristen Chenoweth singing excerpts from Candide. She effectively both acted AND beautifully sung “Glitters” -wonderful! Probably could find it on You Tube but not sure word press would let me attach it.
