Fireworks!

Guinevere is afraid of everything.

She is afraid of little dogs, big dogs, medium dogs, the vacuum cleaner, the Roomba, the lawnmower, the hairdryer, paper bags, squirt bottles, the dog gate, noises close to her, when you wave your arms around, outsiders, things touching her without warning (pillow falling on her, towel slipping off a hook, toy tossed at her when she’s not looking).

But there are two things that Guinevere is NOT afraid of.  Thunderstorms and fireworks.  Unbelievable.  YA and I used to do a few fireworks out on the front sidewalk but we quit because my last Irish Setter, Rhiannon was afraid.  I suppose we could get a few things now that Rhiannon is no longer with us, but considering how many other dogs get scared, it doesn’t seem worth it.

So we’ll watch fireworks on tv and we’ll hear fireworks from the surrounding communities, with Guinevere snoozing at the end of my bed!

Doing anything fun today?  Any fireworks on the schedule?

  1. Work is fun!
Two weeks ago, my former company asked me to oversee remodeling work at the junior high school here in Franklin. The job is less than a mile from home and I don’t have to get on my knees (as if I could). The work isn’t too complicated but must be totally complete by August 15. One of the teams comes from near Chicago so they didn’t want to work just Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Then be off today and come back Friday. So here we are! One guy speaks English while the rest are Spanish speakers. I’m loving it!
Rain is forecast so no fireworks.

  2. Fireworks were a week or so ago at the end of Steamboat Days – we watched them from the end of our block, and they were pretty good!

We may go for a drive, check out different spots we know along the Mississippi R. both here and on Wisconsin side, to see how high the water is and where there is flooding. Other than that, just enjoying a day with no commitments. : )

  3. 4th of July on the 6th

my daughters are are coming back from Chicago for a week

Debbie’s family likes to do a reunion and they did one in Wisconsin dells that was horrible, planned one in northern Minnesota and everyone of her siblings canceled on minneapolis everyone is happy with the mall of america and swimming at bush lake as the go to agenda items son Devin gets home from Germany today but I don’t know what time

all the out of town folks are figuring on arriving about 4 and with rain as the forecast the pizza party at my house may be it. I did ask my girls to stop in Wisconsin and get some ladyfingers and black cats to blow off to keep 4th of July festivities on the ceremonial side for the little guys. I don’t think they’ve ever blown off firecrackers before. When I was a kid we’d get a packet of firecrackers about 8am and start blowing up dirt piles, piles of leaves,

  4. I plan to pull weeds and work on the agenda for an upcoming meeting of my regulatory board. Husband is smoking a pork shoulder. That will take him all day.

  5. So is my enemy

it is making it impossible to see what I write until after I hit the submit button two days running .
I would start the 4th with cousins in detroit lakes blowing up the lakeshoreolder cousins blew up bigger stuff and it was a good thing because every one of us little guys had firecracker blow up in out fingers and it was a stinging pain not an injury to report. Lady fingers are so small one fiesta cousins black cats hurt pretty good and that was the extent of what you’d want to blow in your hand . Bigger would be a problem we will see how the bows do. I was always given a cigar for a punk to light them off with. You’d have to puff it every five minutes to keep it going. The 60’s… give a kid a cigar to blow off his fireworks and show him how to puff the cigar to keep it going

we will have a full day shindig on Saturday with big bar b q and family get together in the back yard A week of family should be great 11 from Debbie’s family 12 from mine plus me and deb makes 25

  6. I remember one July 4th here that was cold, rainy, and real windy, and the ER doctor who lived across the street and I were lighting fireworks with blow torches.

  7. WP hasn’t allowed me to post this morning. I can’t get anything into the text box using my iPad and/or iPhone. I switched to my Dell laptop and it seems to be working. Maybe WP doesn’t like Apple products.

Pippin is a very anxious dog too. His anxieties seem to change from one horrible, awful fear to another. He used to be terrified of fireworks. I don’t think he can hear them anymore. Now he’s afraid of my stove. And by afraid, I mean terrified. I have no idea why. I’m trying to desensitize him by cooking things and giving him a piece of whatever it is. Of all the things to be scared of.

I used to drive out into the countryside to a high hill I know, and park there. From that vantage point I could see the fireworks from at least Northfield and Faribault. I could see others but I’m not sure which towns, or if it was even a town. Pippin wasn’t able to hear the explosions that way, but it didn’t change the fact that he’s terrified of the movement of the car.

The flood warnings that have been in effect for a long time have finally been lifted this morning. It’s pouring rain. I hope we don’t get too much.

To tell the truth, I don’t get very excited about the 4th anymore. For me, it’s a day to be quiet. Our democracy has lasted 248 years. That’s what I’m celebrating. May it last 248 more years!

  9. I was remembering this morning, back when milking cows, TLGMS would play songs celebrating the 4th. For example ‘America’ from West Side Story. I miss TLGMS…

My family is planning a picnic today. They have a covered shelter, but it may just be inside anyway… Rochester fireworks have been postponed. We’re just looking forward to a quiet day. Kelly has just got through a very busy time at work and she’s exhausted. (She works with the Residents and Fellows in Pathology. The new ones start July 1, and the graduates move on. So lots of comings and goings. Computers, orientations, tours, questions questions questions. She loves the people).

  10. Posting this from my pc. I am getting the same “can’t input into the box” issue this morning. The WordPress AI assistant’s suggestions were not applicable to the issues we’re having so I’ve sent something directly to the real WP folks. But definitely seems like a WP bad day, not something related to the Trail.

  11. I’m typing this on my MacBook Air, and it seems to be working just fine. Maybe WP has fixed whatever problem it had earlier in the day?

We’re having a quiet porch picnic with the usual suspects at Anne’s house on Crocus Hill later in the day. To ensure there’s food, I cooked large portion of pulled pork yesterday. Just have to put the finishing touches on the sauce, and we’re good to go.

    Happy 4th, everyone.

  12. Done with work.

Main Street here in Franklin has been demolished. Sewer, water, electric, storm drains. All being changed out. Lots of areas looking bombed out. Last night, folks took advantage of the devastation to set off some stuff. With just a very light rain, I expect more action tonight.

Now, for fun, I’m watching the Jason Bourne film series geographically.

Stop the movie and see where they are. There are actual trip/film vacations you can take and walk in Matt Damon’s footsteps. Waaaaay out of my price range. Thank goodness for the internet.

  13. We had two parades scheduled today – the Tangletown Parade this morning and the Richfield Parade this afternoon. At 9:30, it was raining so we didn’t even walk up to the Tangletown starting point.

When the rain let up a bit, we headed out for the RIchfield Parade. We got about 25 minutes of the parade before the rain started to really come down and they called it.

So now just relaxing at home listening to the sound of the rain!

(Sorry, nothing that WP has suggested has worked. I still think it’s a WP issues and not a Trail issue….)

  14. Ah, ha.

I have had an intense migraine for four days. Spend much of my time at home in my very dark bedroom. I can no longer take NSAIDS that helped me before. (Please don’t start telling me remedies.) I know why. Sandra sleeps about 20 hours a day. Our 59th anniversary is in about a month. It has been a hard week. Almost every resident in her unit has gone downhill badly the last 3-4 months. It is hard to watch. There have been four deaths recently.

Mankato moved the fireworks to tomorrow night and away from the river. I will not go. My grandson’s big St. Bernard is given Trazadone to get him through this day.

I have only slight memories of this day from my childhood. We did go to at least two parades, maybe one of those was with my friend Dennis’s family. We went to a classic town picnic in the park by Lake Superior with the town band playining in a round pavillion. It was like something from The Music Man.

  15. BTW, because the camp was closed for the week of the Fourth, Mr. Tuxedo and his best buddy planned and took a three day trip to NYC to see three Broadway shows, eat in two high-end restaurants, walk Central Park, ride to the top of the Empire State building, and walk Times Square. They landed in the middle of the storms today.

  16. Hey All. I’m posting this from my phone and hopefully it will come through.WordPress says it’s a known issue and apparently it has to do with Safari, which is why it was bugging so many iPhones. Anyway, they did some fix and hopefully we should be OK now.
