Found!

The other night Husband was preparing to use his Neti pot after cleaning his CPAP hose. There were any number of things and implements and Q-tips involved in the processes, and when he was all done, he couldn’t find his hearing aids, which he had purposely taken out. I guess you can’t wear hearing aids when doing what he was doing.

We looked all over, in every room and drawer. I had him retrace his steps as best he could as he had got all the things he had needed for his tasks. He mentioned that he had gone into the bathroom I typically use when he got the Q-tips. I didn’t see them anywhere on the counter, but something caught my eye when I glanced in the bathroom waste basket. Sure enough, there they were!

Husband has lots of numbness in his fingers from carpal tunnel. He must have gathered the hearing aids up with the rest of the cleaning supplies and inadvertently tossed them, too. I felt like I imagine a detective feels after a successful solution to a mystery. I should add that despite his health issues, Husband is a busy and active guy.

When have you felt like a detective? Lost anything recently? Read or watched any good mysteries lately?

  1. I was assembling something large-ish out in the garage yesterday. It involved some steel bracjets that go around corners. I’d found a few of them in a “pan of parts” that I maintain, so I didn’t have to buy everything new at the hardware store. Anyway, they were on the table across the garage from where I was working. I positioned the first one, then had the wrong screws or the wrong screwdriver (I don’t remember which). I walked back to get what would fit, and when arriving at the place where I was doing the work, couldn’t find the bracket, so I walked back again and got the second one, which was misshapen. A search ensued for the first one, which turned out to be in my pocket.

These kinds of things have become increasingly common, and I wish that someone would cut it out!

      1. actually, I liked the idea enough that I went on Alibaba today and ordered up 20 of those little keychain things and will get a hold of my Chinese contact and see how I take the size down from the size of a stamp to the size of a pinhead and see if it can be done so I have begun the journey because of the note this morning

  4. I rarely feel like a detective, just a forgetful old man when I can’t find something. 🙂 I’ve “misplaced” many things lately. Lost for a few hours, a day or two, but then I usually track the item down.

It’s been a while since I read what I consider to be a good mystery. That was Allen Eskens’ “The Deep Dark Descending” back in July.

I’ve been reading more non-fiction lately and some other “author courtesy read/reviews of ARCs” for colleagues, so I haven’t been on my usual diet of keeping up with the new releases from my favorite mystery/crime/thriller authors.

  5. At the end of my life, I want back all the time I spent hunting for misplaced things.

I frequently need to refer to an older email, and some of them get lost – where do they go?? But now that I have gmail there is this “All” category that helps immensely when sorted by “Correspondent”.

We’re enjoying reading aloud from a series by Rhys Bowen, Molly Murphy… early 1900s New York.

  6. Husband was in a panic just now as he couldn’t find his cell phone after a trip to the library and a diner. He went back to both places twice to search. We found the phone behind the drivers seat of his pickup. It had fallen out of his vest pocket.

      1. No, the cautionary tale is mine. I’m talking to my mom on the phone but while I’m talking, I’m getting ready to run some errands. Picking up some mail to go to post office, setting aside a book due at the library, getting my wallet and keys. Then I start looking for my phone. Got a little panicked when I can’t find it in any of the normal places. Probably a full four or five minutes before it occurred to me that the phone was in my hand, up to my ear while I’m talking to my mom.

  7. I lost the keys to the new lock in my basement/garage door. I can’t believe I lost those keys, but I have looked everywhere. I still have the packaging for the new lock and I stuffed the old lock and the old keys into that packaging, and then I proceeded to put the new keys in a very safe place where they would not be lost. I was sure that safe place was in the garage, in case I got locked out. I can’t find them anywhere. So, no, I’m no detective.

I did read two more of the Jo Nesbo mysteries. We read one for BBC, so I read the one that followed it, and one that preceded it. I don’t think I will read another one of his. The main character’s life and personal problems are so heavy and dark.

    1. Krista I recently “lost” keys and checkbook. Finally, after two days I remembered that I put all of those items in the safe I purchased last winter. I knew there would be caregivers in the house who I would be getting to know, and so I wanted everything locked up. Duh. They were not lost all, and there, safely stored.

      1. This is my issue. When I’ve just misplaced an ordinary items (keys usually, or phone), I can usually easily track it back. Think of the last time I’m sure I had it and then walk myself back. However, items that I have said “I’ll put it here so I remember where it is” often go missing for a long time. I had one piece of paper that was gone for almost 8 years. Bright orange – folded up and stuck in a book. So sad.

  8. Better Late Than Never, Baboons,

While at the State Fair, Lou’s cousin got separated from Lou. He called me. I told him that Lou now moves so slow that he is not far away. So I “lost” him for 45 minutes and then they found each other and came back home, hot and tired. Now I have an Apple Airpod pinned to Lou when he is out and about. That is then “found” by the “Find My” App on the iPhone and I can know where he is. I do this even when he is with other caregivers.

I constantly lose stuff, so now I have the same Apple Airpods fastened to important stuff. Which all works unless I lose my phone which I need to find everything else!

      1. I just have the last one in that series to read. Have enjoyed the series – some books more than others. And a correction of her last name – it is Winspear.

  9. I lost an audio book I had taken out from the library. It was a little audio player about the size of a deck of cards. They are called Play Aways. I accidentally dropped it one day, and it came open and the battery fell out. I found the player and the battery, but couldn’t find the piece that fits onto the battery. I set the player aside. I thought I had put it in its case. Eventually I found the piece that was missing, but then I couldn’t find the player. Apparently I hadn’t put it in its case. I am still trying to get all the pieces assembled. The library wants it back.
