Seriously Early Dinner?

With YA out of town, I’m in my “eat what’s here and don’t shop” mode.  I actually enjoy this part of YA traveling.  (Not as crazy about being in charge of Guinevere’s early morning and late night trips outside, but I’ll live.)

This week there have been quite a few leftovers in the fridge – more than usual.  Since I also worry about food going bad, I decided that I would have dinner for breakfast.  I’ve done breakfast for dinner many times in my life but except for a handful of cold pizza starts to a day, I’ve never actually heated up what I think of as dinner food and had it as the first meal in the morning.

I heated up some rice with carrots and parsnips and had it alongside some brie and applesauce.  It was very nice and now I’m thinking I should switch things up more often.  The only  hitch was the feeling that I needed dessert afterwards!

Do you have any foods that you wouldn’t normally eat for breakfast?

      1. First of all, nobody at our house makes or expects a formal breakfast or lunch. Second, I don’t usually eat anything until 10:30 or 11:00. Then I usually scrounge in the refrigerator for some savory leftover. Pizza is prime but any casserole or leftover frittata, etc. is fair game.

  1. Never thought about it much. I’ve had cold pizza for breakfast a few times and enjoyed it. Not sure I’d be in the mood for spicy foods like salsa, chili, etc., for breakfast. I’m too used to something fairly bland with a bit of sweetness–oatmeal; cold cereal; the occasional waffle.

  2. I had spicy chili cheese bread for breakfast this morning. It’s a favorite loaf that I get from a bakery in Madison whenever I’m there. It’s not actually all that spicy despite its name and I make it a breakfast entrée by adding raspberry jam.

  3. Soup… when I was reading about the Mediterranean diet years ago, I started trying (non-spicy) leftover soups for breakfast, and really like them, tho’ these days I usually have them for lunch.

And any sandwich on something considered breakfast-y, an English muffin or croissant…

  4. Living alone allows flexibility. I’m certain I couldn’t live with someone who expected only breakfast foods for breakfast.

Last weekend I had a small piece of baked salmon that needed to be eaten. I ate it for breakfast with sweet potato fries and sautéed kale. I usually eat a banana or other fruit with breakfast, so I had a banana. I didn’t feel hungry until around 3 that afternoon. I like having protein at breakfast. It controls cravings for the day.

Today I have to use up some herbed tofu that I cooked in the air fryer. I’ll have that with steamed broccoli and an apple.

  5. Because of his diabetes, Husband gets up most nights at about 2:00 and has leftovers or skyr from the fridge. The dog gets up with him and begs for (and gets) the roasted butternut squash we supplement his diet with. Kyrill also gets to lick out the skyr container.

  6. Most days we don’t get up early enough to have breakfast, so our first meal of the day is brunch, usually around 11 AM.
Just about anything is fair game for brunch though we typically have pretty ordinary breakfast foods. We do like to change things up a bit so that we’re not always eating the same thing. During colder weather I like something warm, and typically prefer something light when it’s hot.
