Sandwiched

Last night, Husband decided he wanted to have hot dogs for supper, so we headed to the grocery store. At the checkout, we were behind another older couple sporting Methodist t-shirts, and a young Hispanic woman buying rolls and a papaya. The papaya turned out to cost more than the young woman wanted to pay, so she declined to buy it, and only got the rolls.

She used her cell phone to pay for the rolls (I have no idea how that is supposed to work), and was on her way out when the clerk called her back because her transaction had been declined. All this was transpiring while the other older couple was bagging their groceries. They and we noticed all the issues with the young woman’s purchase.

I intended to step in and buy the rolls for her, when the other older woman jumped ahead of me and paid for them. I exclaimed “I was going to do that!” Husband said he was going to do the.same thing. We all laughed except the young woman, who was deeply embarrassed and said it was just a glitch and showed us on her phone the balance in her account. There wasn’t very much in it. We told her she was sandwiched between two old couples and to enjoy the rolls.

Who have been the helpers in your life? What is your favorite sandwich?

  1. I’ve had lots of helpers… friends who babysat, friends (3 of them) who came and painted my kitchen, friends who helped put in a new ceiling in the basement, tim of course with the sandblasting… goes on and on!!

      1. As a practicing Methodist I can knowledgeably say NO, they are not like Morman underwear. They tend to be large and be imprinted with social action projects.

  2. I used to do driving for a charity here in town, mostly senior citizens driving people to clinics and to shop and such. I routinely drove a man with brain injuries to PT and to Walmart. He would shop on his own. By rules of charity I was not to help. He would get to checkout with rather full basket but his card had less money than the bill. Then he would slowly eliminate things. He was more helpless at these moments. Soon people were buying the excess groceries.

  3. I had a lot of helpers when I couldn’t drive while my fractured ankle healed. They took me to appointments, rehearsals & concerts, grocery shopping, etc. I have also been a helper whenever possible, especially for my sister’s family, as well as for friends.
Favorite sandwich – tie between BLT and grilled cheese.

      1. I have twice in my life lived in neighborhoods, one an extensive valley, where people just helped each other.
But now friends, except for two, and her family, quickly abandoned her. So much connectedness has been lost.
Not a sandwich fan. Sandy loved all the sandwich shops, and if she avoided some toppings, they worked for her. Right now with how hectic my life is, I often make sandwiches for supper. The carbohydrates are not a wise choice. I buy ham and turkey or chicken lunch meat and whatever cheese strikes me and a whole grain bread. That’s about all I use.

  4. Outstanding helpers!
The construction site where I’m now working has dozens of Spanish speakers only. With my limited Spanish, I’ve dropped a few phrases that are greeted with appreciation.
I am sure that an ICE raid would be a catastrophe to progress.
I hope it doesn’t come to this but if ICE surrounded the place, I’d have to put myself blocking an entrance.

  5. Been several times when a lot of helpers came forward. I can remember the women from the ladies’ poker club helping me load up the van when I was leaving Brooklyn, NY. And Joel’s friends doing the same with a U-Haul when we moved here from Robbinsdale 9 years ago.

Tons of help when Husband had his stroke almost exactly four years ago now. And more recently, lots of stellar helpers came forward last weekend to make Walken’s memorial go smoothly.

  6. Good Afternoon Baboons,

BLTs are my favorite sandwich. There is a small deli near our house that also has many delicious sandwiches.

Helpers: Right now we have several aides who are wonderful help. When I was a child there was a retired minister who was our neighbor, my aunt and uncle, and some others who provided much needed assistance in so many ways.

PS. If you google Mormon underwear you will get a picture and explanation of temple garments. Who knew?

  7. I stopped at a Home Depot today. They were giving away hot dogs. That was nice. I was kinda hungry, and hey, free hot dog!

I’m a BLT fan too. Also love breakfast sandwiches, english muffin with egg and cheese.

I’ve always had helpers when I was moving. Bless them! And I’ve pitched in for others in the same transition.

    1. My mother raised me on pb, miracle whip (which we called mayonnaise; I didn’t realize it wasn’t actually mayo until I was an adult) and crushed potato chips.
