I had a fun surprise yesterday morning. As I stood in my kitchen, thinking about breakfast, I got a text from one of my donut haunts, telling me that I had a reward coming – a free donut or a free coffee. So much more exciting than eggs and toast. Since I was going out for a couple of errands anyway, I decided to go the donut route for breakfast.
In order access this reward, I had to use my phone but since I didn’t have a younger person with me, I sat in my car until I got onto the right screen, or so I thought. The young man waiting on me was very patient when holding the phone to the “register” didn’t seem to work. He said he’s do it the “long way” and put my phone number in. He then said I had a $5 off, free donut or 5% discount. Which did I want? And then he said “or all three?” You all know what I said. He started punching in stuff; on my side, the screen was showing 3₵. I kept waiting for it to get to a higher number and it never did. When he confirmed the 3₵, I told him I’d have to go to the car to get a quarter since I didn’t have any cash on me. He smiled and said “let’s take it out of the penny jar” which was on the counter.
So I had my donuts and diet pop for free. And it was a gorgeous morning to boot. What could be better?
Any unexpected joys over the weekend?
Went on my first secret garden tour yesterday. The unexpected joy was visiting the garden of a century farm a few miles from town. The owners had a nice spread of wine, lemon water, crackers, meats, cheese, and little sweet treats! Just in time for lunch.
Also, each host owner was gracious with their time and interesting facts and stories about how their gardens developed over time. A nice community-building activity that surprised me in a positive way.

I have a friend from Port Townsend, WA visiting for a couple of days. Haven’t seen her since 2019, so this is a joy.

Rise and Shine, Baboons,
I have been walking in the mornings with the dog. As of this morning I am walking 1.3 miles, while I slowly increase my mileage and my stamina. Adding to that pleasure is the Merlin App that tracks the birds I hear on my walk. Yesterday there were 11, including the Eastern Bluebird, Crested Cedar Wax Wing, Eastern Wood-Pewee. Somedays the Eastern Phoebe shows up. That all adds up to a joy. And Merlin is free, free, free which just makes it even better.
Yesterday morning I finished planting the perennial plants that Lou and I purchased at Gertens last week. Now I must find a Shasta Daisy. The one I had succumbed to winter kill.
I have also experienced a lot of political schadenfreude in the last several weeks. That is a twisted kind of joy.

I have a packet of Shasta Daisy seeds I’d like to send, but it might be a little late for that…

We have had lovely rain showers without wind or hail on and off all weekend. We haven’t had to water the gardens at all.

We’re having a surprise downfall right now. It wasn’t in the forecast this morning. But this means that I don’t have to go out and turn on the hose and water anything today!!

I saw that we might get a brief downpour this morning. It’s supposed to be humid with possible storms all week.

I went to the HotSpot in Northfield with a friend last evening and listened to some local people play some jazz music. It was their regular jam session but my friend wanted to go listen in and asked if I’d like to come. I’m used to music jams but this was a different take on a familiar theme for me – much more structured than the folk jams I’m used to. I learned a little bit about various scales. It was fun and interesting.
Surgery on a pre-cancerous mole again this morning – ugh.

Or they are all so desperately depressed that they cannot lift their hands to type. No joy at all!

Jeff Hanna and Jimmie Fadden. Jeff Hanna sounds exactly the same as he did decades ago.
Jeff Hanna’s son Jaime is a new addition.
Also still in the band – Bob Carpenter, who joined after the initial group had already had a number of albums and hits, but is a longtime member.
