Bob

I can’t remember a more rainy July than the one we are having this year. In addition to keeping the house interior spotless, we are intent on getting rid of garden weeds. The weeds have been horrendous because of the rain.

Weeding for us entails crawling through the garden beds on our hands and knees with dangerous looking implements to remove the weeds, and large buckets to put the removed weeds into. We rarely use herbacides. Husband is currently limping around with a walking stick due to a strained knee muscle from weeding. With apologies to Bob Dylan, this song keeps going through my head every time I pull weeds.

Buckets of weeds,

Buckets of shears.

Got all these buckets coming

Out of my ears.

Buckets of bind weeds in the yard.

Why does weeding always have to be so hard?

I have not seen the new Bob Dylan movie. Husband reminds me we saw him in concert at the Bismarck Civic Center about 30 years ago. He only had a bass player and a drummer with him. I don’t remember the concert very well. I never was a big Dylan fan, but some tunes just stay with you.

Did you ever see Bob Dylan live? What Dylan tunes stick with you? What is your weeding strategy? At what age is a person too old to weed?

  1. Whatever’s in my face. And then if I have time I’ll go get the little weeding chair, but usually wait till the sun is low in the sky…

I didn’t really listen to BobDylan till Nashville Skyline album, and then I was hooked. He had mellowed a bit by then, I guess.
My favorites aren’t probably what you’d think of as “traditional” Dylan:
    You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere
    Country Pie
    Father of Night
    Copper Kettle

  2. I loved “Buckets of Rain.” I used to play it on guitar. It’s a good earworm. Thanks!

Yes, I saw him once in Mankato. It was okay, but we didn’t have very good seats. He just did song after song without any comments to the audience at all – people were disappointed in that. I admire his individuality. He is himself, no matter what.

So many good Dylan tunes! I don’t think I can narrow it down to one or two songs. What an amazing and prolific songwriter! I don’t mind his voice. Lots of people have terrible voices but still sing, and that’s a good thing. His is just so Bob – there’s no one like him. There are younger performers now that try to sound like him. His music and his voice are like a thread woven from the beginning of my life to the present, silver-haired moment. I would say that he’s the voice of my generation.

I used to use slabs broken off of straw bales in my garden. You could break 4-inch slabs off the ends and lay them one after another in the garden rows to use as a thick mulch. It worked very well. It kept the soil moist underneath the straw slabs and near the roots of the plants. The only weeding necessary was around the base of the plants. Once they got bigger, they filled the space so that weeds couldn’t get started. Wheat or oat straw is harder to find now unless you have someone like Ben to provide it.

I am too old to weed. My back told me so.

  3. Despite having lived all those years on highway 61, not a big fan. Here and there a fan of his rendition of his songs, especially very early ones. Prefer a few covers of his songs, a favorite being Nancy Griffith’s Spanish Boots.

  4. Our usual strategy for the veggie garden is to lay newspaper between the rows and then cover the papers with topsoil. That prevent the weeds from growing. We didn’t have time or energy to do thatbthisvyear.

      1. i like the roller seat but the handle one works good

dylan is my soul mate since maybe 67
i was into all his early stuff when he had his motorcycle accident and dissappeared for a couple years. then nashville skyline. self portrait and new morning and i was hooked. ive seen him 3 or 4 times at the state fair then he booked the orpheum for a week during the state fair and i got tickets to all those. ive seen him a bunch more time since then and i would guess ill keep going as long as he keeps showing up. i love that hes doing smaller venues this time around. he doesn’t care about the money and the smalker venue feels so much better. mankato this spring was the biggest spot on his tour . eauclaire was next and seated 300

  5. Like Bill, I don’t really have a strategy. Do I have time snd what’s the temperature are biggies in the will I get out in the garden decision. I am weeding, I do like to think of it as a Zen activity. I’m having an issue this summer because I somehow seem to have become more sensitive to bug bites particularly ants I think. I’ve dealt with this by using my little gardening chair, which sounds like the one that Jacque and Barbara have talked about. It’s a little harder on the back because I’m having to bend over to weed, but it’s keeping me from sitting in the dirt. No weeds in bales thank goodness.

  6. No Bob Dylan in concert for me. I like his songs when I hear them, but I don’t go out of my way for them. Not sure if I could name a favorite.

  7. Attended a Bob Dylan concert ai Ravinia in early 60s when he still was still a folk singer. Ravinia has two seating arrangements: Reserved seating under cover and sitting on the grass under the stars. The concert t was not sold out and when thunderstorms hit, we raced into the covered area where we were welcomed by him.

Like a Rolling Stone is one of the best 60s rock song along with the Stones Satisfaction. My favorite album is Blood on the Tracks.

  8. Tangled up in Blue, no question, is the absolute best. I’ll listen to that one over and over.
And there’s a Joan Osborn cover that is really good.
Shelter from the storm is ok.

I saw Dylan in 1986 as part of Tom Petty, and the Grateful Dead in the old metro dome. Couldn’t understand any of them.
Then my last gig as a stage hand here in Rochester was an outdoor Dylan concert. Had the ‘crew’ T-shirt for a long time. I don’t think I saw the concert, I just worked the in and out.

  9. The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan was one of the first albums I purchased. Fortunately, by then I was no longer living at my parents house, so I could play it to my hearts content without driving my dad nuts. I took full advantage of that, and I practically wore the groove off it. So many great songs on that album: “Girl From the North Country,” “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right,” “A Hard Rain’s A Gonna Fall,” “Blowin’ In The Wind,” “Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance,” I could go on. I love that album, one of the all time great albums.

I have only seen Dylan perform live once, on Halloween in 1978 at the Civic Center in St. Paul. I didn’t have particularly good seats, and what was most memorable were the number of people in the audience who were dressed in Halloween costumes.

  10. I saw Bob Dylan at Riverfest in 1989, He didn’t talk very much, but it was a good show in a nice outdoor setting.

There is one song I always think of when I’m at the state fair. Sometimes when I’m not at the state fair, too.
