The orthopedic folks thought that an MRI would be a good idea after my knee injury.   Was expecting to have to wait longer but they do this stuff on the weekends these days, so I was able to score an early Sunday morning appointment.   

I had an MRI years ago so knew a little bit of what to expect.  The last time I was given anti-anxiety meds as I was a bit worried about claustrophobia.  I also made the decision to run through one of my favorite movies in my head, scene by scene; I got almost to the end.  But it kept my brain occupied so I figured I’d do that same this time, although I skipped the meds since it was my knee.

The technician gave me headphones and they were quite loud and I was surprised to realize that when I play the movie in my head, the soundtrack is a big part of that.  I had to consciously block out the headphone music.  I even thought about asking her to remove them but I didn’t want to stop the process or have to start over.

Luckily it was all done in about 15 minutes.  I hardly got through the first part of the movie in my mind – Danielle had just dropped John Robie off at the beach club at Cannes!  Sometimes I worry about how many times I’ve watched “To Catch a Thief” but it sure comes in handy every now and then.

    I do not have a favorite Cary or Grace movie. I rarely had a chance to view that genre of movie in childhood. Those were aired on TV in black and white on afternoons when I was usually busy with other things. `The local theater did not show such high brow content! But I remember seeing the movie “Marty” on TV with Ernest Borgnine which I loved.

    What I really want to know is the condition of your knee! How is it? Can you go to the State Fair? I am going out on Monday with my new mobil hip. Will you be there?

    1. Went to the orthopedic guy yesterday to find out about my MRI scans and he said it mostly looks like I have knees for someone of my age. Nothing looks chronic – he can’t tell from the x-rays or the MRI what caused the initial pain. He says both the meniscus are torn, but he said he can’t tell if that’s recent and he would’ve been surprised if it were recent because most people 50 and older have some sort of tear in their meniscus. Who knew. Anyway, he said just keep doing what you’ve been doing, compression, therapy,. He did also say, more than once, if it hurts, that doesn’t mean I’m making it worse. That’s always good for me to know. So I’m doing fine today at the fair so far. Brace but no walking stick.

  5. Swoon! Cary Grant! Sigh …. Dreamy.
    I read a biography on him and he had all the usual quirks and emotional baggage of any relatively normal person. But man, that look and that accent, the book did not diminish my man crush on him.

    I think “Charade” is my favorite movie of his.
    The screwball comedies are fun too. “Bringing up Baby”, and the little known “Mr. Blanding builds his dream home“.

    I don’t really know much by Grace Kelly.

  6. My MRI’s, they don’t give you headphones for music anymore because people move too much. Tapping their toes or whatever.
    I’ve had two or three. And some were fairly long. One in particular, for my shoulder and I was uncomfortable and the shoulder hurt and the entire process was rather uncomfortable , I distracted myself by humming to match the pitch of the machine.

    But otherwise I just lay there daydream and listen to the music in my head

  7. I have had 15 MRIs. I take the pill. No music. Too loud, winds me up. I walk the woods trails of my childhood.
    Grace Kelly. Eh. Cary Grant. The usual plus one about being a male war bride, Talk of the Town. Think I have that name right.

  8. I thought I had sent mine. I started out with bringing up baby and then went to monkey business charade my favorite wife and on the grace Kelley side rear window is my favorite Carrie and grace each did their version of the the same movie with different names, Philadelphia story was carriesand Grace Kelley did the same movie with Frank Sinatra.

  10. I tend to not remember movies well. I do recall seeing North by Northwest because of the scene with the cropduster. I’ve likely seen other CG movies as well, but I couldn’t tell you which ones.

    Likewise, I remember seeing Grace Kelly in High Society, and I may very well have seen her in other films, but I have no clear memory of them. I never much cared for her or her “type.” Audrey Hepburn, on the other hand, I adored, she was just the cutest.

  11. Charade, for sure… one of the few movies I’ve seen multiple times.

    The only time I’ve watched many of what I consider old movies (before 1960) was when I lived in Brooklyn with Wasband – they were on TV a lot in the mid-70s, I guess.
    That’s when I would have seen something by Grace Kelly, and I’m sure I saw some that have been mentioned, but they apparently didn’t stick in my memory.

    Now, ask me about Audrey Hepburn…

  12. I’ve had three MRIs, and though the position I was in for one of them was uncomfortable, I was able to relax and listen to John Prine through whatever time it took. No biggie for me.

    1. Oh yes. Just about a month ago, a 61 year old man who was wearing some sort of metal weight chain around his neck, entered the room where his wife was undergoing an MRI in a clinic on Long Island. He was promptly sucked into the MRI machine. For some reason it took an hour to free him, he suffered several heart attacks, and died a day later from his injuries.

  14. I had forgotten about Bringing Up Baby which I love. Katherine Hepburn is a favorite of mine. As a teen and young adult I was fascinated by her independence and her stance that she did not want to marry or have children. I live the Hepburn Tracy films. Grace Kelly just never interested me like Hepburn did.

  15. MRI construction is one of my favorites. I’ve done at least a dozen. They require a completely flat floor so preparation is crucial. And there is a perimeter layout using contrasting finish flooring materials marking off a safety area around the machine. You’ve got to get it all correct the first time as repairs are costly.

  18. I love Cary Grant, so I have a lot of favorites: Bringing Up Baby, Philadelphia Story, North By Northwest. Have only watched TCAT once, don’t remember much of it. Favorite Grace Kelly is High Society.
