The title of this post is a statement that is in the job description of all State employees just in case something comes up that needs to be done that isn’t in our formal job descriptions.
In January, the clinical director asked me if I would smudge our building. I somehow let her know I had done it at our old building, and she thought it would be a good idea to do it again. So did our regional director, so at noon on a Friday in January, the clinical director gave me the go ahead. None of the three of us imagined just how much smoke I was going to produce from my smudging shell, and a couple of employees had to go home as their asthma and allergies acted up. Clients were really confused. None of the smoke detectors went off, thank goodness.
I didn’t think there would be a repeat performance, but last week the clinical director asked me to smudge again, with the regional director insisting that I wait until 4:55pm on Friday to avoid making people ill. It went just fine, and I smoked the whole place up. It had been a particularly stressful week and I loaded the shell up with sage, bear root, tobacco, and sweet grass. Husband followed me and silently recited the Prayer of St. Francis, just to keep all our bases covered. It never occurred to me that “clearing the building of bad juju” would ever be a part of my job description, but there it is.
What is the strangest thing you ever had to do in a job? What would you have liked to see added to your job description? Do you ever smudge?
Got the latest show open at RCTC. The Curious Savage. It’s a nice group of kids.
The paint was even dry. I finished the set, oh… tens of minutes before the doors opened.
There are always last-minute things to do, and I even added some set dressing bits after I finished the last of my set notes. I used the ‘rollerwall’ painting stencil to make wallpaper. It takes some practice, but it’s pretty cool.
“Rollerwall.com” – there are hundreds of patterns available. I also used two different rollers to make a pattern on the carpet. (There are plot points in the script regarding following a pattern on the carpet. “If people walked around the outside of the carpet… it would save wearing out the middle.”)
I’m Behind on a weeks’ worth of newspapers and evening news, which isn’t really such a problem to be honest.
The grass is turning green, we’ve gotten some nice rain, the temps are warming up, and it really does look like spring is here. Should be a really nice weekend here in Minnesota. I’m starting to think it might be OK to take the snowblade off the tractor and hook up some tillage equipment.
Last Sunday Kelly and I went to Tractor Supply and picked up another dozen chicks. Supposed to be girls. Pullets. The sign said “pullets”, but when we went to check out, 8 of the 12 were marked ‘straight run’, meaning boys and girls. Time will tell. All the chicks are doing really well. Sixty of them sure do eat a lot.
I went to Fleet Farm and picked up two new feeders, plus another small waterer for the chicks, and a large 7-gallon unit for outside once they get a little bigger.
I know I have / had more waterers around. Evidently, I’ve put them somewhere. They’re the same place I’ve put the dogs tick meds, and some other things from home I can’t find lately. Maybe next week my head will be clearer, and I’ll find them. Especially now that I’ve purchased replacements.
I bought a flat trailer at an online auction this week. This trailer has open sides so it’s easy to load and unload pallets.
This was a construction equipment auction, and it was astounding to see the prices some of the equipment brought.
The dogs had to come along on the drive to pick up the trailer. It’s Luna and Humphrey in the header photo. Luna is an anxious traveler. Bailey was in the passenger seat with her nose on my hand.

They run some older equipment, and it doesn’t appear they have a lot of money. This spring they were having trouble with the barn cleaner chain. That’s the mechanism that takes the manure out of the gutters and, in their case, pumps it too a lagoon. One morning she said the chain had come off 3 times. And they’re always fixing something with the pump, and it just makes me sad. Life is too short to spend so much time fighting with stuff like this. And yet, replacing costs money too, and it’s a tough situation when you don’t have the money for some needed repair or upgrade.
We’ve probably all been there. I certainly remember being young and newly married and trying to get ahead. But at what cost?
Dad was proud to leave me with decent equipment when he retired. He always said his dad had left him junk and he spent more time fixing than farming. And I guess he instilled that in me. I’ve kept up his habit of having decent equipment and not ‘junk’.
WHAT HAVE YOU PURCHASED THAT YOU REALLY COULDN’T AFFORD?
The college says it’s ‘Aggressive Goose Season’. Proof of Spring if I nothing else is.
There are two pairs of geese. One pair in the courtyard on the West side of campus and they will fight you. And another pair on a median in the middle of the East parking lot. The male stands in the middle of traffic keeping watch. It’s down to single lane there and security has put cones around them.
I picked up chicks from the post office on Thursday. Poultry chicks I mean.
I ordered 50 this year. And because details are a problem for me, somehow I got 15 male ‘Blue Laced Gold Wyandotte’. I didn’t mean to order boys. Still don’t know how I did that. And I looked at this order several times last week to watch the ship date and I never noticed. Details. They’ve been vaccinated for coccidiosis.
So. Guess I’ll have fresh chicken to eat this summer. My mom showed me how to butcher chickens several years ago and that’s when I decided I’d rather collect eggs. I think I’ve heard the neighbors says there’s place I can take them to be butchered. It’s not a good idea to have adult 15 roosters. The poor hens don’t get a chance as they boys never give them a break. And they fight amongst themselves. And believe it or not, we’ve never had a whole chicken to bake, so that will be something to learn and experiment with. Baby chicks are kind of expensive depending on the breed. Somewhere between $4.55 (for the boys) to $5.19 for the green egg layers. I’ll be ordering baby ducks later this summer and they’re $8.36 for a mixed variety, to $9.52 for mallards. Minimum order is 15.
We heard the sandhill cranes this morning. I hope they stick around a while. Saw a turkey vulture too.
Our dogs, Luna-tic, and Bailey are getting along better. Bailey has realized she can fight back, and when she does, she can hold her own and not let Luna push her around, and now they are playing more than just fighting.
We have a couple of new staff at work who are from larger metro areas and never lived in a rural or remote area before. They never realized how much they had to learn when they moved here.
One of our newbies, a social worker, came to the office quite upset last summer after seeing what she thought was a suicidal or intoxicated airplane pilot. She lives about 20 miles outside Dickinson in an even smaller community than ours, and while driving to work saw this little yellow airplane fly under and over power lines and dive close to the ground, then suddenly soar upwards. She wondered if she should phone the sheriff or the FAA. We had a lot of fun telling her about crop dusters. She also encounters coyotes in her backyard, a real shock.
Our new clinical director is surprised by the interconnectedness of us all. She was amazed to hear that one of our mental health skills trainers, a 40 year old mother of two, used to babysit for my kids when she was in high school, that her mother worked as a support staff at our agency for 30 years, and that her aunt is a social worker and one of our crisis staff. Then she learned that the parents of one of our staff were foster parents who adopted some of their foster children who I ultimately saw for therapy.
We tell our urban transplants that these new phenomena are just small town stuff, and we are so glad they are here and we will be happy to help them. It isn’t easy to go to an unfamiliar culture. I remember all the new things I had to learn when I moved to Canada, and I know that any of my rural coworkers would need to learn lots of new things if they moved to Minneapolis, or Seattle, or New York. Big town stuff is also tricky to navigate.
What would you educate newcomers about if they moved to your community? What would be harder for you to adjust to-rural or urban?
I was rather alarmed last Tuesday morning to get an email from my Regional Director insisting I attend a meeting that afternoon with her and four other quality control and administrative staff to discuss some problems with my “compliance” data for timely completion of psychological evaluations.
I have 20 working days from the time I first see a client for an evaluation until the report has to be entered into our electronic record system. I do about ten evaluations a month. My compliance rate is typically 90-95% of the evaluations completed within the 20 day time period. Compliance is a big deal for my agency, as our accreditation and licensure are dependent on everyone getting their paperwork done on time. 90-95% is an acceptable rate of completion.
We have electronic scheduling that helps determine paperwork compliance for most appointments. If your note is completed, a little “F” pops up on the appointment on the schedule. Due to reasons that are too tedious to relate, that doesn’t work for psychological evaluation completion. Someone has to keep a spreadsheet that lists the client’s name, date(s) of evaluation, and date of report completion. A quality control staff has to hand calculate the compliance rate. Most importantly, the appointment in the electronic calendar has to be deleted by the keeper of the spreadsheet.
At the meeting I was informed my compliance rate had dropped to 7%. Well, I knew that wasn’t accurate. I asked who was keeping the spreadsheet. None of the five other people knew what I was talking about. I then reminded them that unless the appointments were deleted from my electronic calendar, it would appear that they weren’t completed if they ran a compliance check with the electronic appointment system. I also told them that none of my evaluation appointments had been deleted from the calendar for more than a year, so it would erroneously seem that I hadn’t finished a report since January, 2023. It was at that point that the they suddenly remembered that my “noncompliance” coincided with the departure of a support staff who had apparently been responsible for the spreadsheet and the deletions, and hadn’t told her replacement or anyone else about it when she left. Everyone was quite apologetic about the mix-up.
Dealing with this nonsense took the better part of a day, what with my fuming and gnashing of teeth and doing my homework to figure out what had gone awry. It reminded me yet again of the danger of poorly run statistics.

Last weekend, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, one of our employees came into our building and spread gold glitter all over-in the elevator, in all the hallways on both floors, in our offices, and on our desks along with green paper shamrocks and candy. Whoever it was had a master key to get into all the offices. Administration has been oddly silent, so I think it was one of them who did it..
All I could think was how awful for the cleaning staff to try to vacuum up all the handfuls of glitter that were strewn all over. The glitter has spread everywhere. One of my colleagues took her work laptop to a meeting at a local elementary school, and when she opened it up, glitter spilled out onto the table they were all meeting at. We are even carrying it into the community! After a couple of days for the cleaners to vacuum you can still see it in the carpet. Husband had some on his face at lunch yesterday.

What are some of your favorite Bernstein works? What is the biggest mess you ever made?
This weekend Husband and I are going to have a shred fest, disposing of lots of unneeded documents that we sorted through and discarded last Saturday. For some reason probably having to do with all the renovation in the basement, our housekeeping has really gone south over the past 18 months.
What with Covid and our busy schedules we have had very few guests over to the house in the past couple of years. Last Sunday that changed when Husband gave a cello lesson to one of our church choir members. The aspiring cellist brought his wife along, also a choir member, and we had to do a lot of house cleaning before they came. The dust was awful, and there were countless dog nose prints on the bay window that needed to be cleaned. We even cleaned out closets and brought lots of stuff to the thrift store. We also gave the basement a good cleaning now that the renovations are completely done. We were exhausted by the time we were finished.
We really don’t have a schedule for cleaning. We just do what needs to be done when we see it. I think that when we are both fully retired it will be easier to be more intentional housekeepers. Cleaning closets is pretty low on the list, but it sure feels good when I open the closets and see the organization and fewer things. I have the same approach to cleaning and organizing my desk at work. I have a far too grand, u-shaped desk at work that allows me to have stacks of papers that get bigger and bigger and still leave me room to do my work. You can see how ridiculously big this desk is.
I also have some odd figures that I have acquired over the years that hold pride of place in one corner of the desk. You can see them in the header photo. When the paper piles start encroaching on Moishe and Sigmund, then I know it is time to file things and straighten things up.
What did or does your desk look like at work? What is your decorative style?
I have two coworkers who plan to retire about the same time I do next year. We have worked together for 25 years, and have experienced the highs and lows and ridiculous moments that one experiences in a government agency.
Over the years we developed a motto to keep us going in our continued State employment until the time we reached the ages to get our pensions- “Just Soak Em!” Why, we ask each other, do we keep doing this? Because we’re going to soak em! We are going to extract every penny we are due from the State for all the hard work we did at wages much lower than in the private sector.
I suppose I will need a new motto for a new life that doesn’t involve my work. I will have to think hard on that. Luverne, the town we plan to move to after I retire, has the motto Luverne, Love the Life to encourage people and businesses to move there. Better, I suppose than “If you ain’t Dutch you ain’t much“, another popular motto from back home.

My children love to characterize me as being really rigid and fussy. I’m really not that fussy and particular, but they exaggerate as a way of gentle teasing. My post last week about Saying “No” gave us some some fun discussion about my parenting. I didn’t realize that they both read the blog on a regular basis. Son sent me the following You Tube video, which I find hilarious. He likes to refer to me as “Meine lieblings Mutti”.
I like their teasing, as it is gentle and done in good humor. My father was a terrible tease but he wasn’t malicious. There is a fine line between good teasing and bullying, though. We don’t have bullies in our family.
I have been teased at work by my coworkers the past few weeks for my smudging of our building and the sheer amount of smoke that I filled the building with. That has been fun teasing, too. I imagine it got tiresome for a former coworker to have it brought up on a regular basis that she had been caught speeding in a State vehicle by the governor. She always accepted it with grace and humor.
What do people tease you about? Know any mothers like the one in the video?
I don’t think there are many Baboons who work full-time any longer for an agency or some other entity. As a State employee I sure appreciated having yesterday off. I really needed a three day weekend. I didn’t get as much done as I wanted, but it was very nice to sleep in on Saturday and Monday. Sunday was an early day ringing bells in church for three hours, but it was nice to take a nap when we got home.
North Dakota still gives State employees Good Friday off. I don’t know if there are many other states that do. That means that I have another three day weekend in March. I imagined what other days in April, June, and August I could suggest to the powers that be to consider for three day weekends. May and July are covered already with July 4th and Memorial Day.
For April we could have the 23rd off in honor of Shakespeare’s Birthday. June 16th could be a day off for Bloomsday, as long as State employees read Ulysses aloud. August 23 would be a great day to celebrate the opening of the first one-way streets in London in 1617. The Transportation Department would support that one!
