Borrrrrrring!

I’ve been writing a lot of notes these days and it’s been hard.  I don’t find I have much to say about my life.  It’s kinda boring.  I work, I sleep, I read – the triumvirate.  Then there’s all the day-to-day stuff that makes life run (cooking, eating, laundry, errands).

There is crafting of course.  It goes into the “Other Stuff” category because it’s not a daily activity; I tend to do most of my crafting on the weekend, when the big a** work monitor is moved off my desk in my studio.  It probably accounts for 6-7 hours a week.

But even with the crafting, my life right now feels boring to me.  I lost my winter attitude way too soon this year and I’ve been feeling trapped in the house by the cold weather.  This is not something I usually experience during Minnesota winter.  The only difference between this winter and other winters has to be the lack of seeing other folks.  Calls, text, even online meetings for work aren’t quite the same as being with people (although I will admit the irony that I wish I could keep working from home starting the first week of April).

I am really looking forward go warmer weather so I can add a socializing slice to my pie.  And then there will soon be a gardening/yardwork slice to my pie as well as a dog-walking slice.  Can’t WAIT for a more interesting pie!

What does your pie include these days?  Any new slices coming up for you?

  1. Happy Pi Day. I’m going to delve back into mathematics. I did not do well with the “new math” in 7th and 8th grade. In my recollection, we spent weeks on the Babylonian number system based on 6. It was likely not that long but sure seemed like it. And grafting equations was a real challenge. The stage was now set for 9th grade algebra failure. The first quarter D- was a close call. Embarrassing. Motivating. Fourth quarter B+. Yet Algebra 2, Geometry and Trigonometry were not going to happen. But after reading about the facinating Fibonacci sequence, I’m going to have at you, number menace!

    1. Interestingly, the books Husband checked out from that WSU Library are math-related (he used to teach h.s. math). One is Fibonacci and Lucas Numbers with Applications.
(There is also How the Hippies Saved Physics, The Music of the Primes, and Combinatiorial Algorithms.)

    2. I am not a math person at all so although I know what the Fibonacci sequence is, I would never see it and recognize like Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu in Da Vinci Code!

      1. I tried for several years to BECOME a math person. I’m here to tell you, quit now; just stop beating your head against the wall. I think if we missed those critical lessons back in 9th grade, algebra will never work in our heads.

  2. My routine’s about like yours, VS. Pretty boring for the most part. Writing/marketing takes the space is my work slice of the pie. I probably read less than you do too. I will confess to watching TV, mostly live sports, Big Bang Theory reruns, Colbert’s monologues and comedy segments (along with the occasional guest who I actually recognize and/or have heard of. (Who ARE some of these “celebrities”???

I’ll have many in-person book events this year compared with only a few last year and none for 11 months of 2020. Those add lots of interest to my life–for me anyway. Most of you might be bored silly.

My social always takes a hit in winter but picks up when golf season starts. Then the writing/marketing/reading piece of my daily pie will take a hit.

  3. March is my least favorite month on the Great Plains. Cold, windy, ugly, unpredictable. I am rarely bored, however, probably due to the nature of my work. Someone always seems to be in crisis. April is shaping up to be too exciting by half, however.

Tomorrow I am accompanying two younger coworkers to a small town 60 miles away to see a client. My coworkers both have very, very, severe ADHD along with anxiety. It should be an exiting trip.

    1. What is going to be interesting is that I can’t drive the State vehicle we will take because I forgot to take the required defensive driving course all State employees have to take, and Mr. Stress is afraid to drive out of town (don’t even ask) which means that Little Volcano will be behind the wheel.

    2. In my world March and November tie as the “worst month.” November just holds Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday which raises it to #11 over #12, that dastardly March.

  4. The photo is perfect, VS! And I can sort of remember/imagine what your usual “winter attitude” is, but please refresh my memory.

I would actually like for things to be a little less boring. Being on two boards of directors, and chairing one, has made my life filled with little details that must be attended to. Add to that Winona’s general awsomeness about almost EVERYthing – yesterday we attended a second vigil organized by high school students for Ukraine. And my penchant for getting involved with everything… It seems like there is just always something new happening. I’m going to need to pace myself in the coming months.

    1. When I have my winter attitude, I love winter. Love the brisk, love the snow (even the second week of March like right this minute), love my fluffy coat, fat socks and my large collection of scarves (mostly knitted, crocheted, sewn by friends). But once it’s gone, I’m ready to move on to Spring/Summer; unfortunately winter attitude deserted me at the end of January.

  5. Planning my weekly radio show takes up a significant portion of my week. Listening to new music, finding suitable non-new music, arranging the playlist, finding good comedy spots from Bob & Ray or Duck’s Breath Mystery Theatre… For a 2-hour weekly volunteer show, I spend an inordinate amount of time and money.

    1. Having the time and money to spend on a true love, like a radio show, is the privilege of the senior years. Autocorrect keeps changing the “pr” word to price ledge. Why?

  6. Rise and Shine, Baboons,

My day, to this minute, is too exciting. All three of my mother’s children were awakened this morning to phone calls letting us know that mom is having a psychiatric crisis. I will not relate the details. We had a care conference scheduled for tomorrow, so the agenda for a usually dull meeting will be filled with arrangements for a consultation with a geriatric psychiatrist. I think it will take all day to settle down.

We are scheduled to take a train ride through Verde River Canyon today. I hope that it is distracting and calming.

    1. Sorry to hear about your mom’s crisis.
My mom has an Alexa that she talks to often. She likes it as she can ask it the time or what day it is or what’s on her schedule. Because I’m the one that set it up, I can see what she asks it. And I can tell when she’s awake “thinking” about things because she’ll talk to it a lot more.
Tomorrow there is a visit with a social worker. Mom must be worried about it; she asked for the schedule 35 times between 4 and 5 AM.

  7. Son will remind me of things when he was a kid. I remember once he mentions it, but so much was just day to day, the same thing; milking cows, doing chores, work, milk cows again. One day just ran into the next for a lot of years. Still does.
FB is reminding me of things I posted in 2020 as we were all shutting down for Covid. Two years ago went fast and slow at the same time.

  8. I’m trying very hard to stay away from pie right now. You can use math to calculate the number if calories in a piece of pie. It takes a bit of information gathering because you have to know the amount of calories in every single ingredient, then add them all together, then divide by the number of pieces. There are a lot of calories in a piece of pie. I know. I have done it. My over-the-top friend gave me a creamy chicken pie last year. She’s so proud of being able to make good home cooked food but she has never watched the calories or fat. So I showed her how to calculate the calories in something like that and she was astonished. Then I pleaded with her to please, please not make any more pies for me. It’s hard. I have to be firm.

I usually enjoy winter. The first snows in December are so lovely. The lights and holiday music are joyous. Seeing friends and gathering for music events makes me feel whole. It’s always a bit of a downhill slide for me after that but I embrace the solitude and I’m usually eager for catching up on reading or crochet. This year the cold was painful. Pippin was sick for a lot of January and February. He had me rushing outside at 2 a.m. when the air temp was -21 and a strong northwest wind was blowing. He looked at me like I was supposed to make it stop or turn the heat up or something. We both had to be bundled up to go out and after the 3rd or 4th trip each night, we were both exhausted and felt like sleeping all day. He’s better now but still has something going on. More blood tests and possibly x-rays are in his future.

Then as the cold dragged on and on, past March 1 and into meteorological spring, I began to feel depressed. Last Friday was almost intolerable with windchills below zero and Pippin again insisting that we take multiple trips outside. I wish his tummy upset could be in the summer, if it has to be at all.

I cheered right up yesterday with the warmth and sun. All it took was some fresh air and some physical work and I was better.

    1. I don’t believe in focusing on calories alone when deciding on food choices. Calories aren’t good when they’re empty. but if you’re getting calories from food that is also delivering nutrients and fiber, that’s not a bad thing. We need calories.

        1. Yes. Calorie restriction slows metabolism, and then you don’t burn as many calories. So cutting calories doesn’t always work the way you want it to. It’s not so much a matter of cutting calories as making sure you calories are nutritious ones.

  9. Wordle today: my second try was a total guess. I was laughing as I guessed, thinking at least it would give me a few more letters. But I got it on the second try!

      1. The first thing I posted to the trail this morning was a different song about Pi; it had a really cool cartoon video. I got a message telling me that WP was fact checking it. So far it hasn’t showed up, it probably never will.

    1. I went to see my honey on the fourth of July
Oh she baked a homemade apple pie
Yeah she knows how to treat me right
I get it almost every night

Pie pie pie, all I want is pie
Hot or cold, nine days old
      I love apple pie

I love my honey and my whiskey too
But if I trust I tell you what to choose
The one that helps me ease my mind
Oh that cherry, pumpkin, apple pie

Pie pie pie, all I want is pie
Early in the morning, late in the evening
      ‘Till the day I die

All you need is a crust and a fruit to bake
Don’t you give me no bread, don’t you give me no cake
Oh I’ll eat it ’till the day I die

Pie pie pie pie pie pie pie
pie pie pie, all I want is pie
Hot or cold, nine days old
      I love apple pie

Pie pie pie, all I want is pie
Early in the morning, late in the evening
      ‘Till the day I die.
