Bathtime

Our low to the ground Cesky Terrier needed a bath last night. His furnishings and skirt are easier to comb through if he has just been bathed and conditioned, and he was a dirty, tangled mess. His breeder recommended Pantene shampoo and conditioner since it doesn’t dry the dog’s skin. My dog has nicer shampoo than I do!

Our dog loves his baths. We keep dog towels in the entryway closet, and when he sees me take them down he races to the bathroom, sits by the tub, and looks expectantly at me. I have never seen a dog who liked baths as much as our current terrier. Our previous Welsh and Fox Terriers hated their baths and tried to avoid them. I attributed it to their bring earth dogs and being uncomfortable in deeper water. They hated going to lakes. Our Cesky is as earthy as they come, but we have never had him to a lake to see how he would approach the water.

There were after-bath zoomies, of course, and then I brushed and combed out his tangles. He seemed pretty happy.

Any interesting pet bath stories? What is your philosophy on hair care products? What sort of bathtub would you like in your bathroom?

  1. The Birds are a delight to watch bathing themselves. Usually, one will take the lead and the others follow in turn, diving in and out multiple times. The aviary has two baths so as to avoid squabbling. Some parrots like being sprayed but mine do not hold still long enough to wet their feathers. Bottom line is: Low maintenance bathing with all the pleasure.
    I have no hair but scalp care products include that petroleum smelling stuff. It controls chronic folliculitis. Sunshine also disinfects my head. I’ll accept the risk of skin cancer.
    No bathtub!

  2. I’ve only had cats, and they’re notorious for hating to be bathed – it was a rare occurrence…

    I was using a product (don’t recall now which one) that left a waxy film on my hair, according to my haircutter, so I now use a product from the co-op, Avalon Organics, couple of nice subtle scents…
    And back in the 1930s or so, some very smart shampoo marketer came up with the phrase “Lather. Rinse. Repeat.” I skip the “Repeat” and do just fine, thank you.

    My ability to bath my dogs at home is reduced, especially with my knee replacement. It hurts to kneel at the bathtub on that knee. I have found a business here in Eden Prairie that has raised bath tubs for pets. So I have been taking Bootsy there for her baths and it is wonderful. Soon Phoebe will be due for this as well.

  4. In my experience, bathing a cat is akin to having the desire to have your face ripped apart by said cat. We only tried it on our last pair of cats. Calvin hated it. Squirmed and wiggled and backpedaled and did everything he could do while I held him by the scruff and lathered and rinsed as fast as possible. Patty (the runt of the litter and afraid of her own shadow) meowled and squirmed and suffered in relative silence. When done with the baths, both ran and hid for the rest of the day.

    We (tried to) bathed them weekly for a month or two, thinking it would reduce the allergens that affected my wife big time. Didn’t help much, if at all, so we gave up, and the cats were more than relieved about that.

    Usually, I use any shampoo offered, but my barber convinced me to use a shampoo that at least slows down hair thinning and loss. Not sure it works because I can’t do a double-blind test on myself. But he’s a great guy, and the shampoo isn’t terribly expensive over the long run because I use so little per shampoo.

    All I need from a bath is a good shower with decent water pressure. Not into taking baths much. But if I want a tub, it’ll be at least seven feet long so I can fully recline. It might as well be a whirlpool tub too, since my joints ache enough and I pull enough muscles to justify having one.

    We do have a whirlpool tub in our basement bath, but it’s only about five feet long, so I can only soak half of my body at one time. Plus the water cools off fast in winter because the tub sits on the concrete floor with no insulation below it.

  5. I have a favorite shampoo and conditioner from the Pantene line but they discontinued it a few years ago. When I learned it was being discontinued and ran around everywhere and stocked up. I’m still using it. I try to use other kinds but this works best for my hair. Pippin has two natural kinds that help control his itchy skin. He could use a good conditioner on his ears and tail but he licks so much, I just hate to put stuff on him.

    My bathtub is tiny. I think it’s smaller than the standard size. It might be better to go with a walk-in shower but once in awhile I like to soak in a tub. It’s awfully nice to go somewhere that has a hot tub. There is a nice one at FiftyNorth (the senior center). I might go today.

    I returned from a short trip over to Door County last Friday night. We crossed “Death’s Door” on a ferry and explored Washington Island. There was a stave church there – a replica of the first one built in Norway. We also saw yellow ladyslippers. It was a very nice trip. I’m still avoiding processed foods, especially sugar, and I was successful, but it was hard at times. My friends like their coffee with plenty of sweeteners. I like mine hot, fresh, and black.

    2. Redken discontinued their thickening gel that I used for 30 years. I scored two bottles at Walmart. I will have to find something else when my stash is used up.

  7. If I came into a tidy sum of money, I’d re-do the whole bathroom and do the walk-in shower in place of tub -I’ve just never been a “soaker”, and have hardly used anything but the shower since we got here. I could go to the Y for a hot tub if I want…

  9. I’ve only bathed a cat once-it was an experience I hope never to repeat. St least the scars have faded by now.

    Personally, I am not a bath person. I really don’t like it when the water starts to cool. I can only sit in the hot tub at the gym for about 10 minutes before I lose interest. So quick shower for me is all I need.

  10. YA washed Guinevere a couple of weeks ago. This is her worst shed season of the year and why he thinks this bathing helps. There was some discussion about another bath coming up but I don’t participate in these if I don’t have to.

  12. I have never bathed a pet. I understand dogs are higher maintenance than cats. When my sister’s family had a pug, the maintenance involved cleaning the furrows in his face with a Q-tip. I’ll stick to cats if I get a pet in the future.

    I have a cast iron clawfoot bathtub.
