Apple of My Eye

I know I’ve talked about this topic before, but it’s fascinating when I see glimpses of myself in YA.  She is in Dublin for two+ weeks for work and the morning of her flight, I found the clipboard (in the photo above) sitting on the counter downstairs.  In an interesting twist on the apple-not-falling-far-from-the-tree, I note that she has used three colors of highlighters.  I am a one-highlighter gal when it comes to my lists; it looks like the yellow highlighter is for her backpack but I’m not sure about the fuchsia or even the dots.

My list-making has evolved in the past couple of months.  My weekly spreadsheet went by the wayside around the holidays last year; it was a gradual decline but I realized it wasn’t doing it for me any longer.  I actually went “list-less” for several months with the occasional list of errands on a post-it or groceries on my phone’s note app.

Then a few weeks ago, after I re-retired, I wrote out a list of things for the next day.  Just on a pad of paper I had laying around and only a few items, nothing that is part of my regular routine.  It felt nice to take a highlighter to the list at the end of the day so I did another list for the next day.  Again – just written by hand and just a few items.  It’s become my new routine — for the most part.  There have been a few days with no list and I survived!

YA doesn’t do daily lists (that I ever see anyway) but it’s nice to have evidence that every now and then she’s takes a page from my playbook.

Would you rather have a pet dragon or a pet unicorn?

  1. Rise and Shine, Baboons,

I will venture outside the question and say a pet Corgi. They are delightful and smart. Weirdly, though, Phoebe, theCorgi, has a stuffed toy about 18″ long with two heads. It has a pink unicorn head on one end and a green dragon head on the other. It is her most beloved toy. Now dirty and bedraggled from Corgi love and chewing, it is still in one piece, while other toys are shrredded with the stuffing chewed out of them. I love both heads because they keep this puppy entertained.

I wish I knew where it came from because it has proven to be chew-proof. Someone else gave it to her and cannot remember where it came from.

    1. Rats. I was SURE I would be able to find the dragon/unicorn toy online… but after about an hour of searching, nothing. I was really hoping, not just for Phoebe but for Guinevere, who is terribly rough on toys.

  2. I guess I’d prefer a unicorn because it would be magical and kind and I could ride it, if it allowed me to. Although, dragons can fly and frighten away all the bullies in the world, so that would be beneficial. Still, I’m going with the unicorn.

I learned yesterday that unless I’m willing to spend more money than I want to, I may be permanently priced out of the Duluth real estate market. Dragons hoard gold… hmmm

Re: dancing: I’m not a dancer. I don’t mind playing music so that others can dance, and I like to watch dancers and admire them, but I only dance in my own kitchen when no one is there to watch me. It doesn’t happen often.

        1. Don’t know which one you’re referring to, but I certainly feel that way about Puff. Somehow, though, the allure of both unicorns and dragons has pretty much escaped me.

          Wasn’t really into dinosaurs either.

  3. I was leaning toward Krista’s view until BiR reminded me of Puff. Tough choice either way because I’m a cat man.

Maybe I’d just rather have a huge poster outside my house with a photo of a Komodo Dragon on it that says, “Caution, Fluffy got loose the other day and is lurking in the bushes somewhere around the property.” 😉

    THAT’LL keep the riff-raff away!

  4. Which is more magical—dragon poop or unicorn poop?

My list making has evolved too. Now I sometimes make a grocery list. That means instead of forgetting things when I go to the store I forget them when I make the list.

  5. The answer depends on many factors– can it talk like Smaug or the Unicorn in “The Last Unicorn”, or does it have the mind of an animal? will it let me ride it? would I have to provide the dragon a hoard, would I be legally responsible for actions the dragon took to enlarge its hoard, would it share any gold with me? most importantly, do I have to feed it myself, and with what? I’m willing to dish out meat-based cat food to my little pride of obligate carnivores, but if I had to provide whole cows to a dragon, that’d be a drawbridge too far. OTOH, that unicorn had better be content with grass and not require organic roses and morning dew or the like. That said, if it was low enough maintenance and let me ride, I’d take the dragon.

  6. My son sent me an article speculating if the auroch was the source of the unicorn myths. Seemed a stretch to me. They are trying to regenerate the auroch’s dna and have made some progress. That the animal I lean to.

  7. i’m a dragon guy
fun to walk where the unicorn would be a pain with people always wanting to check out the unicorn and in reality other than flying around on its back is there a unicorn function i’m missing or what’s magical about it

dragons are like dogs with fire and i think i’d opt for a winged dragon to fly around on given the option

i need to get a list in hand going
i’m running into a regular double booking problem the last month or two

    movie night
    grandkids day
    guitar night
    guitar group practice
now ari started piano and some physical kids program he loves so i’m needing to remember not to book stuff over those times too

i used to do franklin day planner method of list keeping and really liked it
considering the stall i’m experiencing it’s time to try again

  8. I would choose the unicorn as the companion animal that would be easier to feed. The Temeraire books discuss what it takes to keep a dragon nourished, and I don’t want to have to find sheep and cattle for it. I imagine unicorns can be fed on hay and oats and such.
