Man: This is a good year – lots of good berries.
Woman: That doesn’t mean we need more than usual.
Man. I think it means exactly that!
Girl. Yada, yada, yada, yada…..
Grandpa: Just stop.
Girl. Stop what?
Grandpa. Talking.
Woman #1: We ended up having to rent a u-haul to get everything to college.
Woman #2: Makes you wish they would just go to college locally, doesn’t it?
Woman #1: Absolutely not. Two u-hauls would be OK with me!
Girl: He’s throwing berries at me.
Boy: I am not.
Girl: Are too.
Boy: Am not.
Field Worker: Wouldn’t you rather just be eating them instead of throwing them?
Boy: I’m only throwing the white ones.
And then awhile later…..
YA: What are all those scratches on your arm?
Me: From the raspberry brambles.
YA: Why don’t you wear long sleeves when you pick?
Me: Well, it’s hot and the scratches are kinda like badges of honor.
YA: SIGH (and biggest eye roll this side of the Mississippi)
What shall we do with all the fresh raspberries this year?
Eat ’em in oatmeal &&& smoothies &&& ice cream &&& crush ’em up with The Birds seeds&&&
Oh, BTW it’s National Ampersand Day &&&& National Star Trek Day , September 8, 1966 first television broadcast of Man Trap.

Rise and Shine Baboons,
Share them with me! The rabbits ate mine to the ground last winter so I don’t have many this year. Smoothies with raspberries are terrific as is the homemade raspberry liqueur I make with purchased berries. Lucky you.
I love your overheard conversations!

Do you have a recipe for raspberry-rum?

Sorry Jacque, but no. My wife made it back in the early 80s when we had wild raspberry bushes on the edge of our yard. We thought she’d saved the recipe but couldn’t find it in our cookbook/recipe stash. And I didn’t see a specific raspberry-rum jam recipe after a quick online search.
My best suggestion is to make plain raspberry jam, put it on toast, and wash it down with a shot of rum. 🙂

I’m thinking washing just about anything down with rum would improve its taste.

Well, then,I will riff on the basic recipe and add 1 c rum to the mix.

Several tablespoons of rum in Creme Brulee or 1/2 cup in the sauce of Pioneer Plum Pudding is mahvelous.

The neighbors with the trees that shaded our raspberry patch kindly trimmed the branches last month, and now our canes get lots of sun. Next year will be a banner year for berries, especially given the rain we got this summer. My best friend in Howard Lake insists we need to bring some of these canes to Luverne when we move, as she finds ours delightfully tart.

Rain… what’s that? Actually, we got a little last night, but we’ve really been in drought…

My thought, exactly. What rain.
But this cool weather is heavenly.

Last week when you mentioned rain, I was very jealous. We didn’t get any rain at the fair that day and my neighbor told me that it only sprinkled here at the house for about five minutes.

I just heard that Athens, Greece was inundated with rain. I thought, “Hmph, that was MY rain.”

We got almost no berries here, due to the drought, and I guess I haven’t kept up with the cane borers.
But out cantaloupe!! Have made cantaloupe mint soup, cantaloupe smoothies, and there’s always a big bowl of cut up cantaloupe with toothpicks, sitting on the table. Other ideas welcome, there are still 3 or 4 out there…

Only one thing to do with raspberries: leave them on the bush for the wildlife.

One thing Sandra and I learned a year or so after we were married: we both dislike blueberries and raspberries.

It’s so handy when you both dislike the same thing!

Overheard in my apartment about 8:30 last night. I was cooking my supper, standing quietly at the stove waiting for pasta water to boil. Two 40something women walked into my apartment. I keep the door unlocked because I cannot hear people knocking at the door and two neighbors often come to borrow things like butter or eggs and I from them. It is secure building, at least in theory. They discussed how bare my apartment is but how maybe they would rent it. Then they saw me standing at the stove. One of them said to me very sternly, “You are supposed to keep your door locked.”

Wow! Well maybe they shouldn’t walk in on people!
Did you have a stern reply back?
What’s the rest of the story?

I didn’t say anything. They rushed out.

Makes me think they must have been walking down the hall and trying all the doors.

When I was at the entrance to the Fine Arts building last week I heard someone say “I always go counter clockwise, because everyone else goes clockwise.” She said this as she and her friend set off clockwise, and everyone else went counter clockwise.

Counter counter clockwise. What a rebel!

I don’t suppose it occurred to her that there’s a good reason why everyone goes more or less in the same direction. Makes me think about the Madison farmers market around the capital. It’s almost impossible to go in the other direction.

Going clockwise in the Fine Arts building is sort of like going clockwise in a traffic circle.

Also yesterday I was pulling up towards a stop sign and an old man came around the corner and made a left turn into a gas station. I had to slam on the brakes and skid sideways to avoid hitting him. Right behind him was a cop car who turned on his siren and lights to let me know he was following him. I pulled into the gas station to watch. He never even looked at the cop as he took out his credit card. The cop took his wallet. Then another cop car came in with siren and lights. We took my father’s license away for driving like that. I am sure he is about lose his.
Then later I stopped ant an intersection downtown. A school bus was letting kids out to the right of the intersection. I suppose I could I could have made the left turn but I decided to be extra safe. Then a car came through the intersection honking loudly, which gave the driver ample notice to get the plate number as he raced through the bus stop sign. It is good the kids were not crossing the street. In busy areas like that they always drop kids off on the side of the street on which they live.

I’d make the raspberry jam. I love raspberry jam. That raspberry rum jam sounds incredible. Please post the recipe if you can find it!
I also like freezing berries for future use. I make lots of smoothies. Freezing is quick and easy, if you have the freezer space.
OT: I hope to see some Baboons at Rock Bend this weekend. I hope to see Linda on Saturday at some point. I’ll be hosting at the North Grove stage on Sunday from about 1 p.m. to about 3 p.m.

I’m looking forward to John Fulbright. Also I’ve seen Jeff Ray a couple of times, including last week at the State Fair, when he played at the Minnesota Wine Country stand. It was one of those serendipitous things when I happened to wander by at just the right time. The weather was perfect and the music superb.
