Turning….

Over the weekend I was driving in the left lane on 66th when a white car pulled in front of me.  I was started to grumble my usual sarcastic “Thanks for signaling” when I noticed the driver had his left arm sticking straight out of his window.  After a bit I thought maybe he was signaling his turn but that seemed so ancient of a gesture that I was sure I was wrong.  Then he signaled again with his arm when he moved over into the left-turn lane. 

His brake lights were working fine so I don’t know if his turn lights don’t or if he just likes the breeze on his arm on a lovely day.  What I do know is that using your arm for a turn signal, while it was taught routinely when I was a kid, is not taught now.  YA had no idea what I was talking about when I asked her.

Do you have air-conditioning in your car?  Or do you prefer opening the windows to get the breeze?

    2. I would have been in line right behind you if that had happened to me. While I don’t like to put on the air conditioning in the house if I don’t have to, I don’t have any problems with turning on the air-conditioning in the car.

  2. Do they even make cars without AC anymore? None of my earliest cars had it but I wouldn’t buy a car without it now.

    I don’t like the wind blowing on me for a prolonged period. I could never comfortably drive or ride in a convertible.

    1. I love convertibles. Not enough to have one of my own year-round, but one of the things I always did every single time I traveled to Hawaii was get a convertible rental car. Red if possible.

      1. You have no idea how long it took to find a picture of someone doing hand signals that I could actually use. There weren’t that many to start with and most of them weren’t free to use!

    1. If I remember correctly, signaling with the left arm bent at the elbow with fingers pointing to the sky means right turn if you are driving a car. If on a bike, you can either use your right arm straight out of the left arm bent. That being said, the header photo is incorrect.

  7. Signals are considered optional by lots of folks here, maybe because they think the sparse traffic makes them unnecessary. I hate being cold, but dislike the wind blowing on me even more, so the AC is on and the windows closed.

  9. Well, I shall not be driving anywhere today, with or without the AC. I had a flu shot Wednesday and this morning I am very fatigued with chills. I am staying home from work.

  10. And not the best day ever to talk about air-conditioning, is it? At least not here in Minnesota. I have on a long sleeve T-shirt, sweatpants and socks. It must mean summer is officially over.

    1. We harvested everything in the garden because we are in a freeze warning. It was only 32° this morning, but frost advisory tonight with a low predicted of 28°.

      1. Harvest on my list this weekend. God only knows what I’m gonna do with the last of the basil. I’ve already made more pesto this summer than we can eat, and have now filled four ice cube trays with chopped basil and olive oil.

        1. Jacque – in response to bad allergies. I have a wonderful acupuncturist here in Mpls. She has learned to do ear acupuncture to treat allergies. She uses very tiny needles that are inserted into one ear canal (doesn’t hurt) and covered with some type of “bandage”. Mine stayed in for 4 weeks – didn’t even notice them while they were in though I did use a tiny shower cap over my outer ear to keep it dry while showering. I am quite allergic to cottonwood fluff and since the treatment, I haven’t had any symptoms when exposed to the stuff. My treatment occurred in early summer so I don’t know how effective it will be against my general spring allergies but I am hopeful that I won’t have any symptoms or that they will be mild. And supposedly you only need one treatment that is long lasting.

  13. motorcycles used to call for hand signals , my older models do but current have blinkers on the handlebars
    back in the vw bus days (no air conditioning in those for sure) hand signals were often needed because the tail lights were broken
    nowadays i love driving with windows down but i’m such a procrastinator at cleaning the taco bell and potato chip bags out of my car that swirling winds cause mini tornados that suck my flying debris out the window and make me an unintentional litterbug
    drove out to colorado a couple summers ago to take daughter emma and her beau to a concert on a 100+ week with windows down was pure torture … 70 mph wind blowing through on a hundred degree day drowning out the radio was not good
    other drivers always make me shake my head. i just take splice in the fact i only have to deal with then foe two minutes . somebody has to live with them all day

  15. I’ve been watching Columbo and Mission Impossible episodes on Pluto TV. It is always impressive how many convertibles are featured. Of course, those auto companies paid to have the appearances.

Go to Fourgatesmpls.com, click on the photo of her doing acupuncture, and then click on “make an appointment”. The ear acupuncture is quite new so there isn’t info about on her page yet.   16. My 1992 Civic didn’t have air conditioning. I drove it for 17 years. I loved that car. It was the last car I owned that didn’t have AC. I’m starting to think AC is a need, not a want. I can’t do without it anymore. I remember driving home from work once after a long day, so tired, so hot, I almost started to cry.

    I use those arm/hand signals when I ride my bike. I have blinkers on my moped. I like my moped a lot but I don’t ride it enough to justify owning it. It is for sale if you know anyone who is interested. It’s a 2015 Honda Metropolitan with 194 miles on it. I’ll include a high quality helmet, protective eyewear, a gas can, and a can of SeaFoam (for the gas tank when it’s stored over winter.)

  17. My first four cars did not have air conditioning. I managed okay, although there were days when I would have been thankful to have it. The first couple of cars had vent windows, which are fine for city driving, but not very helpful on the freeway. I took the bus to work in those days, so didn’t need to use the car all that much.
