Goo Goo’d

One of the places that Henrietta and I visited in Nashville was the original Goo Goo Cluster store – it’s downtown just a block off of  Broadway. For those of you not from the south, a Goo Goo Cluster is a candy bar, similar to a Nut Goodie.  Instead of the maple center of a Nut Goodie, Goo Goo Clusters have a nougat/caramel center.  Goo Goo Clusters are VERY Nashville and you can find them everywhere, even at the register of a pizza place where we ate one night.  I knew about Goo Goos from programs that I’ve run in Nashville – it’s a fun welcome gift and I’ve purchased them for groups several times but had never actually tried one.

The storefront isn’t a large space – most Goo Goo Clusters are made in a huge factory these days – but they make premium Clusters at the storefront and have some historical photos and old equipment on display.  And merchandise, of course.  Like usual, I sent several photos of t-shirts to YA to see if she liked any of them.  She thought about the long-sleeve cream version but eventually decided against it.  Just as well, because I got one of that design and she probably wouldn’t have been excited about us wearing matching shirts!

I also purchased a couple of boxes of Clusters to take home.  It wasn’t until I was home that I noticed that the Peanut box was mis-printed.  That’s a pretty big fail in my book.  Hopefully no one lost their job over it.  I thought about saving it – maybe someday it will be valuable – but decided against it.  I’ll have photos and a nice t-shirt to remember my visit.  (They tasted just fine despite the misspelling.)

Do you have a favorite candy bar?

        1. I made a new cookie this year called an Italian Christmas cookie. It is very unsweet, and it got a good review from my BFF last night, who is also not fo d of overly sweet things.

      1. The dairy milk bar that is produced here in the US doesn’t taste a whole lot like the dairy bar that you get outside of the US. I’m not sure why but I expect it has something to do with Hershey which owns the rights to Cadbury in the US.

        1. Salted nut roll is a favorite of YAs.

Snickers is almost too intense for me. I love the little fun size ones but rarely eat a regular size Snickers. Fact I can’t even think of the last time I ate a full-size bar.

  1. Where shall I start?
I think my all time favorite was (and I repeat myself here) the Russell Stover Cashew Patty, now probably available only at their outlet stores – one is in Owatonna.

Turtles are right up there, and there’s Toblerone, but I think they’re only in milk chocolate. At this point I like the darker, less sweet stuff.

    1. There’s a candy shop at the mall of America that does great milk chocolate cashew turtles. I always manage to walk by there if I have to go to the mall.

  2. Salted Nut Rolls, Kit Kats, Almond Joys, & Mounds. I never buy full size anymore – too much and too expensive. Snickers used to be in the top 3 but the caramel gets stuck in my teeth and I have too many crowns to risk having one of them damaged.

Update on injury: Same day surgery on 12/6. Have to keep this “Cement block” splint on until then. Many folks volunteering to get me to the places I need to be during the next couple of weeks. Knee scooter is helpful but has a wide turning radius. Lots of maneuvering in my small condo.

  3. Rise and Shine, Baboons,

Northwest Iowa produces the Bing candy bar, and when my high school girls and I gather, someone is in charge of bringing some. They are only available in Iowa.

Milk chocolate and peanuts on the outside. Pink cherry flavored nougat on the inside. We used to eat them at lunch time. it is a ritual.
