Today’s farming update comes from Ben
Mud.
That’s all I got to say about that.
I shouldn’t be dealing with mud like this at the end of January or early February. I have to admit I do kind of like the warmer temperatures, and I don’t mind not having to deal with blizzards, and our electric bill is certainly cheaper, and I haven’t used as much diesel fuel moving snow, and all that kind of stuff. And, I still think the weather has to turn and we will probably get some more snow, and it’s gotta get cold again and that means I have to do mud all this over again in March. I dislike the mud more than anything.
Luna and Humphrey have both gotten baths because they get so muddy outside during their runs and playing. Luna does OK with the bath. When Humphrey gets out of the tub halfway through, it’s a bigger adventure. And why don’t people put a hot water faucet outside their house? There have been multiple times when I have thought hot water outside would sure be useful. Maybe that’s a thing now, I don’t know, but I think someday I would like to have hot water available. All that to say Humphrey could have a bath out in the garage instead of in the bathroom.
There’s a meme going around lately that says we should say “I get to…” instead of “I need to….”. “I GET TO walk through the mud and get everyone’s feet dirty and track it into the shop and the tractors and the house.” Nope, still not working for me.
I looked up the translation of mud. I found it interesting so many countries have “blato” “bláto” “boue” “bloto” “bahno”. Or “Mudder” “modder” “muda” “muta”. German is “dreck”.
Speaking of running the dogs…Luna is so young; she needs to run off energy and I’ve mentioned before about running her on the driveway and how she leaves a trail of dust in her wake. However lately, she doesn’t like to get too far from home. We’ll take all three dogs out for a walk / run, and she won’t go far before turning around and going back home. I end up with all three dogs in the gator and we go to the end of the road, and she races for home again. Do you suppose she really loves to run? Or is she running for home and safety? We need a dog psychic.
IS LUNA RUNNING TO OR FRO?
CRYO-ANYTHING ?
That is odd – I’m betting on To safety. Maybe Luna had an unobserved encounter with some animal that has her wary?
I don’t understand the Cryo question – something about cold therapy?

Rise and Shine, Baboons,
Maybe Luna finds it so nice to have a good home, that she does not want to wander far from it.
Lou’s great Grandmother’s diaries, written in the 1920’s, 30’s, and 40’s are interesting as they describe farm life in NE Iowa before electrification and reliable roads. The entries from the months of March, April, and May are full of mud. She felt trapped by the mud. The horses get stuck, the wagon wheels fall off, and the cars are sucked downward into the mud. They cannot get to town for weeks and months. She is lonely, yearning to see other people. It is a glimpse into a world I don’t experience in which the natural world isolates people. It makes me grateful for civil and electrical engineering. We do not often think about that now.

I had not realized until I read those that NE Iowa was late to getting electricity.

My mother lived in the rural area outside St. Cloud as a child. They did not get electricity until late 30s, early 40s. She remembers having kerosene lamps when she was young.

My mother’s family also used kerosene lamps. There were birns on some pieces of furniture from them. They never did have indoor plumbing.

You’ve given Luna shelter, food, good care, and a whole family. She might have been in a really bad situation before she found you. She knows she found a really good home and she wants to stay.
I’ve had the same thoughts about outdoor hot water. It would be nice to have. I don’t have the same need for it that I once did. Could you rig up an outdoor cauldron over an open fire and warm up maybe 10 to 20 gallons of water and maybe bathe her that way? I’m visualizing something from the past, I know. How about a “summer kitchen” kind of a thing?
Cryo-whaaaa?

Kyrill loves his baths, and is so hopeful whenever I turn on the faucet that he will get put in the tub.

We have mud here, with temps in the 60’s this week. Kyrill and Daddy just came in from a walk, and Kyrill raced right to the bathroom, as he heard me say he needed a bath. He is a happy dog!

I’ve always loved this song. I remember playing it for hours on end so I could get all the words written down.

You don’t have to live on a farm to be bugged by the mud right now. We have towels on the back porch and you have to trap Guinevere before she gets in the house. She’s had at least one bath that I know of and several “paw washings”.

I read a book a few years ago in which the main character (and her folks) are held cryogenically for their long space flight. I know the author just made up how the preparation for this was done but it was beyond gruesome sounding.
