Mottos And Slogans

I have two coworkers who plan to retire about the same time I do next year. We have worked together for 25 years, and have experienced the highs and lows and ridiculous moments that one experiences in a government agency.

Over the years we developed a motto to keep us going in our continued State employment until the time we reached the ages to get our pensions- “Just Soak Em!” Why, we ask each other, do we keep doing this? Because we’re going to soak em! We are going to extract every penny we are due from the State for all the hard work we did at wages much lower than in the private sector.

I suppose I will need a new motto for a new life that doesn’t involve my work. I will have to think hard on that. Luverne, the town we plan to move to after I retire, has the motto Luverne, Love the Life to encourage people and businesses to move there. Better, I suppose than “If you ain’t Dutch you ain’t much“, another popular motto from back home.

What is your personal motto right now? Think of new mottos or slogans for yourself, your family, state, or your community.

  1. In retirement I left a nation (Taiwan), a language (Taiwanese) and an identity (Aboksu). If I have a motto now, it’s “Old guys need something to do.” A couple days ago, in conversation with another Old Guy (whom I hadn’t met before), I added a corollary, so now it’s a two part motto.

“Old guys need something to do, and friends with whom to do things.”

    1. Pickleball is the answer, Aboksu. At least that’s what my husband would tell you. He plays at least twice a week, not so much for the game itself, I don’t think, but more for the comradery and the social interaction after the game. Where he plays there is a core group of four or five old guys who like to commiserate over a beer at a local bar afterwards.

  2. OT: Before I forget, I yesterday was a very thoughtful day on the Trail – I learned quite a lot about the nature of teasing, and about the impact it has had on some of our baboons’ lives.

You never know what topics will draw this stuff out!

  3. I’m a firm believer that there’s no one right answer to everything. Life isn’t a puzzle that can be solved only one way. And heaven only knows, there’s more than one way to screw it all up, too.

I’m learning late in life to cut myself some slack for being imperfect; to be kinder and more forgiving when I fall short. There’s a lot wisdom in Maya Angelou’s words: “I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better.”

  4. Rise and Shine Baboons,

I do not have a motto today, except maybe, just get by. Lou had a good day yesterday but did not sleep last night so this morning was difficult trying to get him comfortable. He finally fell asleep now. This all means I am exhausted too since I was up in the night with him. I am having my own nap in a minute.

  5. For many many years, my motto has been “done is better than perfect”. I’ve been thinking throughout the day that maybe I should get a new motto now that I’m retired, but not sure what that would be.

    1. Don’t ‘half ass it’ was one of my mentors advice. But that also stops me from doing it at all. And sometimes, as you said, done is better than not done…
