Where In The World Are Renee And Chris Heading?

Greetings from somewhere that I hope is not North Dakota. Despite all of us, including the dog, being under the weather, we got the dog to the boarding kennel yesterday and managed to get ourselves and our bad colds to Bismarck last night. If everything works out, we will be in the air winging our way to a somewhat far off destination when this posts.

I have to attend the world’s most boring psychology conference again, (all about licensure and professional regulation) and Husband tagged along to take in the sights.

We will be in the home town of an actor noted for the portrayal of an iconic alien. The first chocolate factory in this country was here, as was the first subway. A city park is famous for its role in a beloved children’s book about ducks, and the city is noted for its legumes. The header photo is a clue regarding the main ingredient of a famous confection named after a nearby suburb.

This should give you all some research to do.

  2. Last time we were in Boston area we had driven all the way across Massachusetts to visit Mount Auburn cemetery. I recommend it if you can get there.

    3. Costas’ Candies here in town has excellent dark chocolate truffles in many flavors. We also take our daily “dose” of Endangered Species Almond and Sea Salt dark chocolate w/ 72% cacao. The best we’ve found among the easily available brands in grocery stores. Finally, Maida Heatter’s World’s Best Hot Fudge would be my desert island for life chocolate of choice. I’d die a quick and happy death from OD-ing on that stuff. And I wouldn’t even need ice cream to drizzle it on. 🙂

  7. Is the alien Mr. Spock? My personal favorite fictional alien is Doctor Who.

    Years ago, we took the kids to Paris on spring break. On the way home, husband and I both had sinus infections. The flight was packed, all four of us were split up around the cabin, and I was completely miserable.

    In 2019, husband and I went to London. The man sitting next to us coughed through the whole flight over. Sure enough, husband came down with a bad cold midway through our stay and flew home while sick. He will never forgive Coughing Guy.

    I don’t eat chocolate as much as I used to and prefer the dark variety. I love Fig Newtons.

    1. While in French Polynesia (Tahiti) back in the late 90s, I developed an earache a couple days before the flight home. I didn’t have any decongestants with me, nor did my travel buddies. There were 3 flight segments from Papeete to MSP. By the time I got home I was in agony and saw the doctor. Diagnosis: Sinus infection, bilateral ear infections, and ruptured left eardrum. I couldn’t hear out of my left ear for a couple weeks. The hearing did return but that ear has never been the same. Every time I fly now I take Sudafed 30 minutes prior to take offs and landings.

    2. Doctor Who (nearly all incarnations but Tom Baker was the best). Also Baby Yoda (The Mandalorian), Data (Star Trek:TNG), and Robbie the Robot (Forbidden Planet).

    3. I am not a chocaholic but definitely prefer dark over milk chocolate.

    1. Toward the tail end of my three week trip to China in 2001, I got a severe upper respiratory infection. Despite intervention from a couple of doctors in our group, with medicines they had brought from the States in anticipation of just such an occurrence, my condition quickly deteriorated.

      Our return trip was two days long. Day one, a crowded bus ride from Guangzhou to Hong-Kong, was uncomfortable and exhausting, complete with being herded through a border crossing during which we had to vacate the bus with all of our belongings.

      Though I was bone tired, I slept little that night due to our overheated hotel room and a fussy baby. By the time we boarded our flight on day two, I had a severe headache, and I realized I had left my winter jacket at the hotel. I didn’t so much mind the jacket, but I had two disposable cameras in the pockets that contained all of my photos from the Great Wall. But, it was too late to do anything about it.

      We had a layover of a couple of hours in Tokyo, in an airport devoid of any charm or amenities. During the final fifteen hour flight I was wedged between two new mothers with babies that took turns fussing and pooping in their diapers.

      It took weeks to recover when I got home, and like K-Two, I lost 90% of my hearing in my right ear due to that infection. My hearing never recovered.

  13. Happily, I have never had to fly when I was sick.

    My favorite alien is now Harry Vanderspeigle  – we have been watching the on Netflix the first two seasons of Resident Alien, and I hardly know what to say – I just don’t see how it is he does that! If you like outrageous characters, I highly recommend it. (A third season has just come out on Sci-Fi channel, too, I believe.)

    Chocolate – well, Wilbur’s chocolate buds, which I can’t find in town anymore as the one store closed, and I refuse to go thru Amazon.

  14. went to visit my drummer in Boston at Berkeley school of music

    driving from minneapolis on a short trip spending thanksgiving provided several great memories

    when we got into town I asked for directions to Massachusetts avenue in my midwestern vote from your boat in Minnesota accent and he asked me to repeat it twice because he had to acclimate to it

    oh he laughed maaasss av

    i went into a sub shop to order a sandwich on italian bread. Cheese onion tomato lettuce mayo and mustard. Lodge? He asked? I asked him twice because I couldn’t understand . Sure put some of that in it. I got a sideways funny look. My friend told me he was asking if I wanted a large.

  17. I flew home from Ireland once with a cold, but it was nothing to flying home from Thailand with a sprained ankle. There was no position that I could keep my ankle/leg that didn’t hurt. So there was no sleeping all the way home and it hurt like heck.
