Never Down on my Chips

I may have mentioned that I have a Sandra Boynton-illustrated calendar that lists many very unusual holidays throughout the year. 

You’ll be happy to know that today is Chocolate Chip Day.  (Not chocolate chip cookie day, which is in August).  I haven’t looked too hard so I’m not sure WHY there is a chocolate chip day.  1937 was the birth of the chocolate chip – you’ve probably heard the story – when Ruth Wakefield chopped up a Nestle chocolate bar and added the bits to her cookie recipe.  A couple of years later, she signed a contract with Nestle which is why her recipe is still on the back of the chocolate chip package to this day.  She received a lifetime supply of chocolate.  Personally I hope she also got a boatload of cash.

I’m thinking pancakes sprinkled with chocolate chips (I have milk chocolate and white chocolate on hand)  for breakfast but haven’t decided how else to incorporate them into my day.

Any chocolate chip ideas?

  1. I know the history to know why they are called chips, but those things today, wonderful little items, need a more appropriate name.

  2. Back when I built props for professional photographers, one photographer wanted me to build a volcano that would spew chocolate chips when it erupted. I made the volcano out of plaster over a wood and lath framework painted chocolate color and contrived a spring-loaded compartment at the top that could launch the chips when triggered.
    Testing it on set, it turned out that the heat of the photographer’s lights and the “smoke” from the nebulizer caused the chocolate chips to clump together, so I had to individually cast fake chocolate chips out of plastic resin.

    1. I’ve read things about how food in ads isn’t always really food but little resin chocolate chips would never have occurred to me!

  3. I’ve done the chocolate chips sprinkled on pancakes thing. Pretty good. But as a kid, my fave use for CCs other than in cookies was to make a peanut butter and chocolate chip sandwich. Kind of like Reese’s Pieces before they were invented. And if you really wanted to go gourmet, add a sliced banana to that delicious gooey mess.

    1. I get a mix at Aldis that has peanuts, raisins, white chips, chocolate chips and caramel chips. A few almonds and cashews as well. Yummy.

  4. For a few years Nestles made red and green chips at Christmas time. Unfortunately they have quit making them. I’ve only found one company out there doing red/green/white “candy coated chips” but I’m not willing to cough up $18 for a one-pound bag. I used M&Ms these days for the holiday cookies…. using Anna’s chocolate chip recipe. But every year I do a little searching in case some other company decides to get onboard my red/green chip train!

  5. I used to make open face sandwiches with peanut butter, miracle whip, with mini chocolate chips on top. They were REALLY good! I even made them on Ritz Crackers for appetizers a few times. Haven’t had one in years; it never seemed healthy…

    And now I have Mayo in the house rather than miracle whip and I haven’t tried it that way yet.

      my father in law doesnt understand why I don’t understand

      he thinks it’s the difference between catsup and mustard

      1. Mayonnaise makes better dip, if you’re making something with sour cream. Miracle Whip is too sweet for that. But cole slaw is better with Miracle Whip and a little vinegar.

        1. I’m a Miracle Whip devotee- I was raised on it. YA prefers Hellmans. We have both in our fridge.

  6. Rise and Shine, Baboons,
    There are all kinds of things I would not have thought of in these replies. Especially the fountain with resin chips. I think I am a chocolate chip purist–I like them in only the classic recipe, or the chocolate chip oatmeal cookie recipe, in Congo Squares ( a family recipe–like blond brownies with chocolate chips), or eaten right out of the bag. I am also picky about ONLY Nestle or Hershey. The very speedy gourmet versions are also acceptable. I do not like the knock offs with too much wax and sugar and too little chocolate. Hmph. Those are a violation of the chocolate chip credo.

    I think I will bring the Congo Squares to Blevins on Sunday for sampling.

        1. I’ve found them at Cub and Lunds, and I think maybe Whole Foods. Target used to carry them, but I don’t think they do anymore.

  7. thanks for the inspiration today. Chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast. Peanut butter sandwich with chocolate chips for lunch, frozen yogurt with chocolate chips after dinner. Yum-O!!
