Peccary Plans Gone Awry

For my birthday, my dear friend Susan got me a javelina cookie cutter.  Pretty niche gift, right?  You wouldn’t think there would be enough javelina fans in the world who need a cookie cutter, but I’m glad somebody thought this was necessary.

Took me a few weeks but I finally decided last Friday to fire up the oven and make a batch of cookies.  The first aha moment was how large the cookie cutter actually is.  It came packaged in it’s own little box so I didn’t really have it in my brain how large it was until I opened it; it’s a good six inches long.  Basically the size of three medium-sized cookies together.

The second surprise was related to the first.  Being so large, I only got 17 cookies out of the entire recipe; I didn’t roll them too thinly because I was planning on sending a small package to Susan when they were finished. 

The third revelation was also related to one and two.  I didn’t have a tin or tupper that I could fit the cookies into.  This wasn’t an irrevocable problem as the Dollar Tree is ten minutes from my house.

They baked up nicely but there turned out to me one more shock.  Instead of making chocolate icing from scratch, I grabbed a can of chocolate icing that I had in the cabinet.  It was clear almost immediately that this ooey gooey icing, while being quite yummy, was never going to set up nicely for stacking them into a tin and sending them via the postal service.  I considered stopping mid javelinas and making a sturdier icing but I didn’t want to waste the icing I had.  The cookies went straight into the fridge and even after sitting overnight, still too sticky to mail. 

Oh well, best last plans.  Guess I’ll have to do another batch at some point this fall and think it all through a little more.

The cookies are quite nice and very cute.  I even bought a cheap comb at Walgreens to give them that javelina-y look.

  2. There are cutter shapes for everything, it seems. Maybe some dodo cutters or passenger pigeons…
    Personally I’d like some vintage toy robot cutters—Robby the robot, etc.

    The icing: good old fashioned butter icing that gets just slightly firm is my favorite for cookies.

    The shape I will consider all day, but between baking cutters and clay cutters, there are almost infinite shapes. Maybe a dragonfly? Thinking, thinking.

  4. How about a Donald Trump cookie (his whole body) so you could symbolically “bite the head off the snake”? Of course, it would have a round, doughy shape, orange food coloring where his hair would be, and taste terrible. Of course, you wouldn’t swallow the bite. Rather, you’d spit it out emphatically and then say, “Ptooey! Good riddance!” 🙂

    2. As Bill mentioned, there’s more cookie cutters out there than you could imagine. Including presidential cookie cutters, and including several versions that I found quickly online for 45. Of the ones I found 50% were not positive images of him, but 50% were. In this quick search, I did however find several Kamala cookie cutters and I think I might have to make a little purchase this morning.

    1. I’m sure there’s probably an oak tree cookie cutter out there. I know for sure that there’s an oak leaf cookie cutter because I have one.

  6. I sometimes use the Easter Island Head emoji in texts, just because it seems to be an under-used emoji, and it has it’s own song. This prompted my granddaughter to announce that it was my favorite emoji, and she bought me a EIH necklace. Soon thereafter, my daughter gifted me an EIH ice cube tray. I I think an Easter Island Head cookie cutter would be a good. and possibly rare one to own.

    1. Ding, ding, ding. I found a couple and one of them is really cute. It also makes indentations for the eyes and nose so that you can tell what it is immediately. It would have to be a frosting list cookie so that you could see the face. Maybe a nice rich ginger cookie.

  7. OT – I returned yesterday from a week long trip to visit the 5 national parks in Utah. One of the trails we hiked in Bryce Canyon is call the Bristlecone Loop Trail which leads to a group of Bristlecone Pines. That reminded me of the song by Michael Johnson, which in turn reminded me of TLGMS.

    Bryce was the most comfortable temp wise – started out in the upper 40s but quickly reached the mid 70s. The other parks were all hot – upper 80s to mid 90s. We intentionally entered each park early and were done by early afternoon before it got really uncomfortable. My hydration pack came in very handy.

    We included Lower Antelope Canyon (northern AZ) at the beginning of the trip. What an awesome slot canyon – words are inadequate to describe it.
