Fall Bonanza

You all know my weakness for seasonal goodies – so does Trader Joes.  There is normally a slew of new items each season, most of which won’t be back when the season is over.  YA and I went out a couple of weeks ago, right after the latest Fearless Flyer (Trader Joe’s newsletter) arrived in my mailbox.  There are plenty of things we like to shop for but looking at and maybe picking up some of the seasonal stuff adds to the fun.  In this respect, the YA apple didn’t fall far from the tree!

We tried fall leaf tortilla chips and potato crisps in the shape of ghost and bats.  A big jar of harvest soup, a bag of apple granola.  Pumpkin pasta.  At the last minute we tossed a box of apple shortbread cookies into the basket.  Normally the seasonal items we pick up are nice but nothing that makes me sad knowing they won’t come around again.  But this year is different.   The tortilla chips, the ghost potato crisps and the apple shortbread were all winners.  I even whipped up some fresh salsa to have with the tortilla chips.  YA ate most of the apple shortbread before I even got one.

Over the weekend, I had to pick up a couple of things at Michaels… and when I came out of the store and headed toward my car, my eyes lit on the Trader Joes on the other side of the parking lot.  I didn’t even hesitate; headed right over and picked up more of the chips, crisps and the shortbreads.  YA was very happy to have two more boxes of shortbread but thought that my extra bags of chips and crisps boarded on “hoarding”.  She also suggested that I shouldn’t be eating the ghost/bat crisps until it’s a little closer to Halloween.

Considering that the world has been celebrating Halloween for a couple of weeks; the scary movies started up on October 1st on the dot.  I like the fall and Halloween, but I prefer not to have my wits scared out of me by scary movies and creepy designs.  I do like most folks yard decorations at this time of year; how do they keep those giant skeletons standing up?

So we’ll be enjoying our fall goodies for a few more weeks; I’ll probably have to make more salsa!

Do you prefer the cozy side of Fall or the spooky side of Halloween?

  1. Cozy side of fall. Leave Halloween for the kids and “de-escalate” all the hype and consumerism that goes into it. I’ve never been a fan of horror movies, only having watched a few over the decades. From what I hear, most of them seem to be mostly about gore for gore’s sake.

    1. And screaming. YA loves the scary stuff and more than once I’ve had to ask her from another room to turn down the volume of what she’s watching. Two too creepy for me.

  2. Rise and SHine, Baboons,

Cozy here. I have on a big sweater today and it feels so lucious.

I am at an art retreat in Jordan,MN this week, so my input will be limited.

  3. Oh yeah, the cozy part. I’m going to go find my cozy sweater… would like to get out the flannel sheets will we get past the last high 70s weather at the end of this week…

I’m with Chris – I’ve watched very few of the horror films, just don’t like being scared to death! I’ve been tempted by The Shining, because it’s such a cultural icon, but… not yet.

  4. Count me in for the cozy stuff. I like a fire in the fireplace on crisp mornings like this one. I like knitting or crocheting or reading at home with soft lights on. I love wearing a sweater.

I don’t celebrate Halloween in any way. It seems like another excuse to go out and spend money on a lot of stuff that winds up blowing around or tangling up some poor, defenseless bird. Besides, if I eat even one candy bar, I’ll eat a whole bag. I’m sort of grateful that my voice therapist has forbidden chocolate for 6 weeks. When I don’t have it, I don’t miss it. I am missing the caffeine though. A lot.

I’m not into the scary stuff at all. Give me a cozy mystery instead.

This morning I roasted a couple of big buttercup squash and a couple of large sweet potatoes. Bring on the comfort food!

  5. I love the creativity that goes into producing a Halloween costume. I think my favorite is the guy that I was talking to years ago and wondering how come he just wore a suit and tie for his Halloween costume and we had a conversation and talked for 10 minutes and when he turned to walk away, the whole back of his suit was cut out, and you just saw a bareback and a pair of boxer shorts walking away with the suit basically cut away. It was a riot. I never laughed so hard Halloween costume that I ever did was the year. I decided to go as Wolfman and went around to barbershops collecting clippings just to glue onto my face to go along with the putty, wolf nose that I crafted for myself one year I went to the kids school for the Halloween parade, and I wore my motorcycle leathers and the helmet with the enclosed round mirrored mask so that no one knew who I was. I look like one of the marvel characters and it was a riot the principal was a little concerned about who is this odd guy walking through in the skin tight black leathers and we can’t see his face when I finally showed her. She laughed and said I should’ve known .

  6. my wife likes creepy movies and I have a daughter who is just a maniac for horror movies which is really odd because she’s such a quiet introvert that it makes me wonder if she’s OK in there I don’t mind watching creepy movies, but they certainly don’t call out to me I thought night of the living dead one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen
I was very impressed with what the guy could do with zero budget. I enjoy Steven King’s mind, but his writing doesn’t call out to me. I can’t think of another horror genre, author, which I guess tells you that I’m not much of a scary book fan

  7. I hang up a halloween decoration on the front door, but otherwise I’m not really into Halloween. Cozy, on the other hand, has a lot of appeal. A plaid flannel shirt. A hot coffee drink from a shop where I briefly consider a pumpkin or apple flavored concoction, but then think, nah, just a regular latte will do fine.

  8. I just found Dale again and I feel so cozy! 🙂
Chicken stock simmering on the stove, a warm sunny fall day, and more canvassing to do shortly in hope that the Force will be with us! I’ll be very spooked if the Dark side prevails!
How could I dress up for my Halloween birthday? Maybe I could be a candle burning at both ends.
