Saturday Crafting

When I was in St. Louis, looking for place close to Nonny’s where I might find an old-fashioned roller shade, I discovered that Fleet Farm was doing a free craft day.  Luckily it was after I got home since driving around in St. Louis after their big snowstorm was not my idea of fun.  Also luckily the craft event was at all the Fleet Farms, not just the St. Louis locations.

I didn’t have anything scheduled for that morning so headed south to the Lakeville Fleet Farm – about 20 minutes in the Saturday morning traffic.  Got there about 10 minutes early so wandered around a bit.  Although I was technically first in line, a family with two young boys was right behind me; I left them go first.

It was a pretty easy project.  Paint the little jar with modge podge (a kind of craft glue), roll it in fake snowflakes, glue on the two little eyes and carrot nose.  Then twist together two pipe cleaners and pick out two cotton “earmuffs”.  The staff hot glued the pipe cleaners and earmuffs on the cap of the jar.  Then they gave us each a battery operated votive candle for inside the snowglobe.

As a planner at heart, I couldn’t help noticing how I would have done the craft day differently.  I would have put modge podge and snowflakes at each of the tables to prevent the big glut at the beginning.  I would have checked all the glue bottles to make sure the top notch was clipped off so the glue would come out.  And I would have had at least three employees at the hot glue station.

Of course, these are big complaints… the craft was going as well as could be expected when most of the crafters were five and under.  I was the first one done and I was walking back to my car, two different families stopped me to look at it, as they were on there way in for the event.

I didn’t really need to drive to Lakeville to do this.  By looking at the photo I was pretty sure I actually had all the stuff to make this at home, except for the little votive candle.  But it was a pretty morning, I had a good CD for the drive and got a nice coffee before I headed home.  I used red and green pipe cleaners so it will be part of my Solstice décor in December.  For the time being it’s still sitting on the kitchen counter where I can still admire it every day.

Do you have a relaxing Saturday morning routine?

  1. Rise and Shine, Baboons,

Now that I am retired the days do not differ that much. But on Saturdays I usually do not go the gym much for water aerobics or anything else, which is nice. (Yesterday was the first day back to water aerobics. It was cold but I did it). So I get to do my morning puzzles without interruption, then move into more leisurely breakfast time. This Saturday I am meeting with my art friends for a pot luck brunch which will be fun. It is not scheduled early so I can still linger over the puzzles. That is about it in my old age.

        1. I quit Connections and Strands as one of my (very few) resolutions this year. That just leaves me with Octordle, Quordle and Wordle.

  3. Yesterday’s topic: I really love the Riverwalk Market Fair on Saturday mornings in Northfield in the spring and summer months. They do have it indoors in the winter, but it’s not as fun as walking outside in downtown Northfield on a warm Saturday morning. Chris sells his books there sometimes.

Today’s topic: Retirement means that every day is Saturday! I’m very lazy and slow to move in the morning – pretty much every morning. I’ve never been a morning person and retirement means that I can now indulge my true nature – laziness! I do certain things on weekend mornings though. I read a little longer on Saturday mornings, and call my aunt in Rockford, IL after 11. On Sunday mornings I make a really good late breakfast. I rarely make pancakes, French toast or waffles though. I go for the vegetables and protein instead. I like to make an egg bake with lots of veggies and feta cheese. Sometimes I just make a two-egg omelette with veggies and feta cheese. I slice the little baby potatoes in half, coat them with olive oil and herbs, then roast them in the air fryer. I usually have tea with my breakfast. Weekday breakfasts are eaten standing up in the kitchen. They’re usually a boiled egg, a few carrots, an apple or other fruit, and tea.

I needed to get out a little today so I drove to Red Wing. I went to Fair Trade books and bought a book by Siri Hustvedt, The Sorrows of an American. I think there are many sorrows right now. She went to St. Olaf when I was there, and I’ve always been interested in her successful life.

      1. I just ordered my advent jigsaw puzzle for December. They are all labeled as 2024 and are marked down 50-80% right now. But there’s nothing about the puzzles that ties them to any particular year. Just 24 little boxes of puzzle pieces. I went for the 80% markdown!

      2. Yes. They used to have a big golden retriever in there too, but he passed away recently. Also, they sell gorgeous Persian rugs.

    1. My dad didn’t do very many funny things, but he used to sing this song on Saturday mornings when he was going to the dump. (We lived in the country and this was long before township dumps were closed and curbside trash and recycling pick-up became mandatory.) So it was funny because he was “going away with his friend.”
