Birthday Balloons

YA doesn’t like a big fuss made about her birthday.  This year she did request a birthday breakfast at one of her favorite places – The Lowbrow – but that was it.

This is hard for me as I love making a fuss.  In my old job, everybody was in charge of someone else’s birthday.  Card and treat.  For the last several years of my employment, I had Norma’s birthday.  Norma loved having a fuss made over her almost as much as I loved making a fuss; we were a match made in heaven.  I miss those days.

Anyway, YA doesn’t ever want a gathering, a cake, a fuss.  About five years ago I made a banner that I hung up in the dining room and then I added balloons for her age.  She allowed this so that’s my go-to these days…. I hang up the banner and put up the balloons.

I figured out that year that I could extend the festivities a bit by celebrating the dog.  YA is 20 years older than Guinevere so all I had to do was take down the “2” balloon, leaving the “5” balloon up for the dog.  It’s the only fuss that Guinevere gets; she doesn’t even like the balloon.  If you take it down to show it to her, she runs out of the room.

This year, with Guinevere turning 10, I did have to get a “1” balloon to make her age correct.  Seemed a little silly to buy a balloon for the dog, but I did it anyway.   Since I’m not making a big deal about Norma anymore, I guess the dog gets the attention!

Have you ever celebrated a pet’s birthday?  How?

  1. No birthday parties for my pets as I’ve never known the dates. Every single one has been adopted/rescued. An annual “rehoming” party is a good idea.

  2. No, I think we often didn’t know the cats’ birthdays, or didn’t write them down when they came to us… even the one when we kept the kitten born in our house (Snowball/Slush).

Closest to that sort of celebrating was at Christmas – maybe canned food that day in addition to the dry stuff, or some of the fish from the fish & lefse.

    1. We have those Christmas stockings — knitted by Nonny with the Santa face and jingle bells. YA and I both have these with our names and we also have stockings for Nimue and Guinevere. Nonny‘s not knitting anymore because of her arthritis so Guinevere’s was made by a friend who knits. I found the pattern online. There’s usually just a couple of special treats in the stockings for the animals.

  3. Rise and Shine, Baboons,

Nurse Phoebe’s birthday is March 4 when she will turn 2 years old. The thought of her as an adorable little puppy still makes my heart melt. She will get a new toy with a squeaker to rip apart and some treats, as well as a serving of canned dog food. Our rescue dogs had unknown birthdays, but we had the vet’s best guess, as well as the Gotcha Day. Then they were gifted their treats, as well. The very best treat, though, is a trip to the dog park where each dog can pretend she is a wild wolf hearing the call of the wild.

Yesterday Phoebe put me in mind of Lassie warning everyone that Timmie or the hired man fell in the well, got lost in a cave, etc. Lou inhaled some food down the wrong pipe and had an extended period of coughing. First Phoebe seemed to think he was barking, and she barked back. However, later she came to get me, yipping until I came out and made sure Lou was OK. She was on guard until he stopped coughing and she was certain he was alright. But she was not satisfied until she and I were both right there, protecting him.

  4. Humphries birthday is 1/5/2015, so he gets lots of praise and extra treats.

Bailey we only have a rough idea so we made it August 3, 2018.
And Luna has her Gotcha Day of 10/5/2023.

  5. One of the things about cats…they sort of happen to you, and you don’t know when they were born. Sometimes you don’t quite know when they became a member of your household, either. Sammy and Georgia just sort of showed up, and I don;t have any record of when. I didn’t really think of keeping track of any approximate birthdays for most of my cats. Isabel, who came to me as a kitten, may have been born around my birthday – April 3 – so I kinda felt we could share a birthday.. She would have been born in 2001.

I am actually more likely to remember the days they died. Easy come, very, very hard to go.
