Annexation

I was much alarmed recently to see that some strange State legislator from Iowa was proposing to annex all the bottom southern counties in Minnesota, including my beloved Rock County, and make them part of Iowa. I haven’t seen much in the MN press about this, so I am hoping that it is being viewed as a political stunt and nothing to take seriously.

I lived within 15 miles of Iowa my whole life and lived in south central Iowa for a year, and I sure wouldn’t want to become an Iowan. Too conservative for my tastes. I also lived for a year in southern Indiana, and my, was that strange after living in Manitoba for six years. North Dakota is conservative, too, but I have managed to tolerate it for 37 years. People here are quirky enough to make life fun and interesting despite the influence of big oil and conservation politics.

We still plan to move to Minnesota in the next year, but if the Iowa annexation actually happens, it sure won’t be to Luverne!

What states or countries have you lived in? Where would you consider or not consider living?

  2. I read about that too. I think it’s about as realistic as making Canada the 51st state. But I have been wrong before…. Seems that anything can happen these days.

    I have lived here in Minnesota all my life, and it’s really the only place I want to live. If I had to consider another place to live, I imagine I could live in northern Wisconsin or maybe the UK if things turned completely upside down here. I truly love our state, and I would be sad to have to leave.

    2. I was born and raised in upstate NY but now feel happy to be a Minnesotan after 55 years here. I agree- northern WI or UK (Cotswolds or Yorkshire) would be my desired alternatives.

    I won’t be living in Gaza no matter how glamorous Der Phooey, Adenoid Hynkel, makes it sound.

  4. Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Illinois, plus freshman year at the U of Miami, FL. Pretty dull.

    I could live almost anywhere in Canada, especially BC or the Canadian Rockies. Nova Scotia is beautiful too, but I’m not much of an ocean guy.

    I don’t want to live anywhere in the South or east. Too hot and humid; and too crowded, respectively. Maybe New England other than the Boston area (too crowded again).

    Other than parts of California, I could handle probably any place west of the Mississippi, not including LA, TX, AR, MO, OK, KS, NEB.

    Iowa, Minnesota, Arizona part time.

    I have not been sorry for a minute that I left Iowa. While I love aspects of it, it is not my place. When I chose a profession as a young adult people there said to me, “Why do you want to do that? We don’t have problems here.” Well, they do now.

    Arizona was nice in the wintertime and it was nice hanging out with the grandchildren there, but I had an allergy headache every minute I was there. Plus its primary value is money, money, money. Too, too hot in the summer.

    Minnesota. I would also check out New Zealand if I was young and nimble which I am not.

      1. Iowa, California, New York, Minnesota, Indiana. I consider myself a Minnesotan, having been here since 1977 except for Husband’s grad school year in Muncie. I too am glad I got out of Iowa before it went crazy.

        I’d probably be happiest in the states surrounding the Great Lakes. I would consider living lots of countries if they would have us, but my favorites would be the British Isles and France.

  7. England, Ireland, Denmark, Switzerland, Russia, Greenland, Wyoming, New York (Long Island), Illinois, and fifty-three years – longer than in all of the other places combined – Minnesota.

  8. I’ve said before, I have only moved from the basement bedroom to the upstairs bedroom.

    I know too much about annexation as a township supervisor.
    Yeah, I heard that Iowa proposal. Just more hot air.

  10. Do not fret. Move to the happy counties of Minnesota without fear of Iowans’ incursions. The US Constitution, Article 4, Section 3, declares: “New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.”
    That was suspended when Virginia left the Union, enabling the United States to create West Virginia out of territory that was not the United States.

I giggled listening to a Stephan Colbert monolog about the US not needing Canada because we had Minnesota, and how hot dish and poutine are essentially the same thing, and that Minnasotans speak funny like Canadian, and that just like Canadians, no one can understand Minnesotans when they speak.

  12. I’m a lifelong Minnesotan with the exception of a brief (under two-year) sojourn in Milwaukee. Even then, we spent most weekends in Chicago or with family in Minnesota. I can’t think of many places in the U.S. where I’d want to relocate other than Chicago. The west coast might be nice (CA, OR, WA).

    My great grandparents came to the U.S. from Canada (Quebec). I’ve often wondered if I could use my ancestry as a case for being repatriated as a long-lost Canadian–or at least get me a spot at the head of the queue of fleeing Americans.

    1. Our son was born in Winnipeg. He was 10 weeks premature and got the best medical care and his care didn’t cost us a penny. Canada will claim him as a citizen forever.
