Carb Fest

Over the years I’ve tried a lot of different food plans.  Whenever I hear of someone talking about how good they feel on some particular diet, I get curious.  I’ve even tried raw a couple of times; the second time I lasted the longest – four days.  Tried the zone for a bit.  The Mediterranean is pretty close to our regular habit, although as vegetarians, we pass on the occasional fish/meat.

The keto diet was the one that I toyed with for quite some time before giving it a shot.  I have two good friends who swear by it.  I loaded up on a few keto carb substitutes and I made it three weeks.  But I didn’t feel better.  In fact if you factor in how much I was thinking about carbs, dreaming about carbs, crying about carbs, I was much worse.

So it probably won’t surprise anybody that every now and then I let my delight in carbs get the better of me.  Every month or so YA asks if Great Harvest is making Derby Cookies; they are her favorites.  She is also very fond of the various cheese breads that Great Harvest makes.  When she looked at the March newsletter, she was happy that the Derby cookies were on the docket as well as the gouda garlic bread.  Since she was traveling and I was in party prep, I made the bakery run on Saturday (that’s when they do the gouda bread).  I thought that ordering ahead would help, but it didn’t.  In addition to YA’s bread and cookies, I left the bakery with a White Cinnamon Chip loaf and an Apple Caramel loaf (mostly apple, not much caramel – a perfect ration for me).

This is a lot of bread, even for me.  YA will take care of the gouda and probably most of the cookies.  Guess I’ll just have to suffer through my two loaves.  Sigh.

Anything that occasionally just makes you lose control?

  1. Quick fix. For some reason I’ve had in my brain that I got the Gouda for YA. Turns out it was the Three Cheese Sourdough on Saturday!

  2. I’ve read about various diets too, but I’ve never been able to stick to one. It’s true that restricting yourself causes you to think overmuch about the one food you’ve eliminated.

I tried the South Beach diet years ago and it worked. I stuck with it for the required two weeks and lost 14 pounds. At that point you’re supposed to start gradually adding (healthy) simple carbohydrates, which is where I fell off the wagon.

I’ve decided that a whole foods, vegetable-based diet is right for me. I do eat dairy products and chicken and fish now. I was vegetarian for many years, but I feel better when I have protein. I don’t eat beef or pork at all.

Ice cream makes me lose control.

  3. Husband made an Italian pork roast on Saturday, and I made Ribollita, an Italian vegetable stew with slices of homemade French bread in it. I chose to forgo the meal due to a really bad flare-up of diverticulitis, but that pork, sitting there in all its roasted glory, was more than I could pass up, so I started to nibble, and that led to more nibbling, and that led even more nibbling, which led to a very sleepless night with intense abdominal pain. I almost had Husband take me to the ER in the middle of the night. I went to Urgent Care on Sunday morning, and now I am getting by on clear liquids, antibiotics, and the occasional slice of Husband’s freshly made sourdough bread.

  4. The cabbage soup diet worked for me for a while. And once when I started a fitness program at our health club, I lost 10 #s fairly easily by cutting out my bedtime treat! If I was serious about dropping some pounds, I’d make a main dish salad for at least one meal a day.

I worked above the Great Harvest Bakery on 44th & Upton (S. Mpls) in the late 90s. OMG – on Thursdays when they made the Asiago Cheese bread, the place smelled like pizza for most of the day. And they always had those bread samples available, WITH BUTTER!

I seem to crave custardy things, so lose control if there’s a bread pudding, or clafouti, etc. And as Krista said, ice cream, if I don’t pay attention.

  5. OT: I have a friend whose Twin Cities daughter will be away from her home for about two months, and her dog, Ladybird, needs a temporary home-away-from-home. If any of you know of someone who might care for this sweet collie-type dog, they’re offering $100 a week plus food expenses. Email or message me if you or anyone you know are interested – I can send photos via email.

  7. I am currently roasting one of the 20+ butternut squash we grew in the garden. Our dog LOVES roasted squash, and would eat it all up if we let him. He only get a little in his kibble every day, and in the middle of the night when Husband is up and gives in to the dog’s “squash whine”, which differs from his whine for ice cubes.

      1. I was wondering what do do with all the squash. Now I can cook with it and feed it to the dog. He also loves canteloupe. We will grow that this summer, too.

  8. I caught a nasty cold, Baboons,

I have been sleeping the day away after getting sick with a scratchy throat and cough last night. I just finally revived myself. Sweets and sugar are my constant temptations so I keep a limited amount of those in the house. Then there is yarn and knitting materials, not to mention polymer clay art supplies. Those all meet the “loss of self-control” criteria.

But the big one is a Spring Plant Sale! Each spring at the Picha Nursery and the Hennepin Co Master Gardener Spring Plant Sales, I lose my self control, my budgetary vigilance, and my mind, and purchase many flats of plants for the garden. This year I will be thwarted, though. My hip surgery is May 5, 1-2 weeks before these events. Maybe I can talk my son into taking me to the Hennepin Sale. We will see.

  9. Today I was notified that someone tried to charge something on my debit card. It took a phone call and voice mail and two texts before I believed it might be real and called my bank. I ordered more credits on Audible this morning, and WHAM – somebody tried to charge a few hundred dollars on my card. So I’ve had to get a new card. I already had my credit flagged with a fraud alert that went to all three credit reporting agencies. I think my next step will be to freeze my credit. I’m feeling quite low and grumpy right now. I’m aware that the Muskrats have all of our information, but I don’t think this is related to that. I think it’s just good old fashioned identity theft. Grrrr… I might have to go buy some Breyers and over indulge.

And WP really is being difficult!
