Bye Bye Summer

I swear I’m not doing yet another blog about hand pies, despite the header photo.

A discovery was made a couple of weeks ago that if I ask Alexa to play “You Butter My Bread” by the Divers, I will get a nice mix of songs that remind me of TLGMS.  Some of the songs are actually TLGMS favorites.

Yesterday morning, while I was making something that I’ve promised I won’t mention, I made my request and one of the songs that Alexa coughed up was “Canned Goods” by Greg Brown.  You all know I adore this song; this morning, looking out a the slight dusting of snow on the neighbor’s roof, I realized that it’s official that summer is over.

So going into fall/winter, this is what I’ve put up this year:  strawberry jam, raspberry jam, pesto, applesauce, tomato sauce, basil/oil cubes, chive/oil cubes, mint/lime juice cubes, strawberries, raspberries and grapes.  Somehow it doesn’t seem like I’m keeping up with Greg Brown’s grandmother!

Any favorite summer songs to tide us over?

    1. I’m impressed by all you’ve put up, VS. We froze several bags of cored tomatoes, and a few raspberries. : )

      This one always comes first to mind. I remember listening to it on the car radio as we drove to Colorado (to the trailer court) summer of probably 1959:

    1. I’m assuming it just can’t get out? And not that it’s injured? If it’s a brown bat, they are protected in Minnesota but maybe long handled spoon you could scoop it out and release it?

    2. It probably can’t fly out. I don’t think they can get out of things like buckets or even fly off the ground. You might have to scoop it out (wear sturdy gloves). I would just toss it into the air and let it fly. They are looking for warm crevices this time of year.

    3. Bats don’t do well when the temp is below freezing. Maybe your bat was caught by surprise when the temp dropped last night and sought out a pocket of warmth. It’s supposed to stay a bit warmer tonight, perhaps it will find its way back to a hibernation site.

    4. Another friend got me to some info – have managed (with gloves) to get it, for today, into a ventilated box lined with a soft cloth for it to crawl under. Animal control here was closed for Veterans Day, so I’ll call first thing in the morning and see if I can bring him/her over to them!

  1. The words of the poem that this music was set to:
    ‘Tis the last rose of Summer,

    Left blooming alone;

    All her lovely companions

    Are faded and gone;

    No flower of her kindred,

    No rose-bud is nigh,

    To reflect back her blushes

    Or give sigh for sigh!

    I’ll not leave thee, thou lone one,

    To pine on the stem;

    Since the lovely are sleeping,

    Go sleep thou with them.

    Thus kindly I scatter

    Thy leaves o’er the bed

    Where thy mates of the garden

    Lie scentless and dead.

    So soon may I follow,

    When friendships decay,

    And from Love’s shining circle

    The gems drop away!

    When true hearts lie withered,

    And fond ones are flown,

    Oh! who would inhabit

    This bleak world alone?
