Tired….

I’m that proverbial early bird.  Not sure it’s ever gotten me any early worms.  It’s pretty rare that I can stay asleep longer than 5 or 5:30, although occasionally in the winter when it’s dark later in the morning, I can manage a little bit longer.  In the summer, once the sun starts heading into the sky, I’m done for.

This is not a problem unless I have too many late nights.  Usually I’m not a night owl  but….

I’m binging Brokenwood these days, so one night in the last week, I was  up until midnight watching the last of the DVDs that I had from the library.  Another night this week, I stayed up too late watching some Peter Davison Dr Who episodes (the DVD was due the next day).   A third night I was getting close to the end of Inside a Dog by Alexandra Horowitz.  It wasn’t really a page-turner (4 stars) but I really wanted to see if the author was going to wrap it up with anything more surprising than she had already presented (spoiler alert – she didn’t).

No regrets about any of these nights but since sleeping in doesn’t happen so I am dragging a little bit the last couple of days.  Nothing too serious and after a few more regular nights, I’ll be back to my bright-eyed, bushy-tailed morning gal.  Unless I find something else compelling that keeps me up……

What’s worth it to you to lose some sleep?  Last thing that kept you up past your usual bedtime?

  1. I am almost always awake by 6:00, so I try to go to bed by 10:00. When I overshoot that, it is invariably for a book, not television. This week it was When the Moon Hits Your Eye by John Scalzi and The Paris Novel by Ruth Reichl, both of which were worth missing some sleep over.

  2. I stayed up until almost 11 watching the college football championship game. An exciting, down to the last minute game won by one of the most unlikely “underdogs” (read not one the usual championship caliber teams)–Indiana. Lots of spectacular individual plays, and a true team effort.

Otherwise, a page-turner book can keep me up past 11 (usual bedtime is 10). I’ve also watched a few old George Carlin specials on Prime Video that are lots of fun.

I’ve forced myself to become a morning person at the expense of my night-owl preferences. Gone are the days when I used to watch those first music videos at midnight on Saturday nights, or stay out until two a.m. with my “harem”–long story; don’t ask).

  3. We are still adjusting to our move and retirement, and we can hardly stay up past 7:00 pm. We are up by 6:30 am, usually. We only nap occasionally. I can stay up later if we have company.

  4. Prizes.
The Cincinnati Reds pizza sponsor gives pizza certificates for callers at the conclusion of games. West coast games give the best opportunities.
I’ll watch Sleepless In Seattle after midnight just to say I did.

  5. I enjoy going out to catch some live music once in a while, and that’s usually the reason for staying up past my bedtime. I mentioned going over to Oak Center a couple of weeks ago. There is always something going on at Imminent Brewing here in Northfield, and there’s often something at the Grand too. I don’t go to all of these. I’m usually happy at home, knitting or reading, and going to bed on time.

Maggie gets me up during the night sometimes – not often. If she gets me up at 4:30, I usually make tea and relax in the recliner in front of the fire when we get back in. She is able to go back to sleep, but I am not. This morning she got me up at 3:47. We went out, did her business, came back in and went back to bed. I slept until 7:30 when she attacked my face. I feel pretty well rested today.

    1. Kyrill gets me up sometimes in the middle of the night. Now that our yard is fenced, he can go out on his own and he always comes back quickly. Husband’s fluctuating blood sugar because of his Type II diabetes leads to his having a large snack about 3:00 am most nights.

  6. When I was a preschooler I would stay up at night with my mother and snuggle with her and watch Johnny Carson with her. I often slept until noon. It was hard to get into a morning school routine after becoming accustomed to staying up late and sleeping late.

  7. Last night I was “early to bed” because I had to rise soon after 2AM to do the 2:30 to 7 AM shift at the local warming center, being the “duty person awake” in a church gymnasium where about 30 people who, otherwise, would be sleeping outside in the snow, could be warm and safe off the streets of Holland, MI.

  8. Things here have been so tense, I am not always sleeping well, even when I black out the news. The overhead federal agency helicopters make it difficult to block out what is happening. (They were harassing a local apartment building where Somalis live, then the helicopters harass the bus stops where the kids board the school bus). Monday and today there have been no such helicopters in the neighborhood, so I do hope this will soon be over, and sleep can be restored.

I am a mess when tired. I get irritable and short-tempered, and I have no patience. Therefore, I try to have a regular bedtime routine. I plan to be out late Friday evening. Two friends and I are going out for a girls’ night–dinner and the touring musical, “Chicago” downtown. Can’t wait!

  9. I can stay up late with a book if it’s an e-book; paper books are harder because of lighting. We managed to stay up until midnight on New Year’s Eve, and put in some late hours watching the Andor series (Husband kept saying, “just one more episode”). Usually, we’re in bed by 11:00 and up around 7:00. Hard to get up in the cold and dark; I often get up to turn up the thermostat and then hunker down in bed until the house warms up. Some mornings, kitty performs early wake-up service by scratching the side of the bed or “tapping” me in the face.

It’s easier to get up early and stay up late in the summer, when we might go to a concert, go for a late walk, or just sit out on the deck late into the evening.
