This is a hard time of year for me. I grew up in a place where spring is already sprung at this point. Grass is poking up, flowering trees are beginning their glorious bloom and folks are out starting to clean up their yards and gardens. I’ve been in this part of the world for decades so I know that this current warm weather is just a tease. But there are no other signs; it’s just too early to be dreaming of the garden just yet. I know this in my head but my heart is so ready to get out there.
Then yesterday I saw my first SunSetter Retractable Awning commercial on TV. How is this not one of the first signs of spring???
How do you survive the “not quite winter anymore but not quite spring yet either” time?

I bought several packs of Seed Savers seeds at the Co-op the other day. Then I came home and swept out the garage and moved a couple of pots around to the patio. You’re not alone!
I’m wearing a warmer jacket today, though!

We are not starting seeds this year,. We plan to get bedding plants for the raised beds that are yet to be installed.

Saw the girl across the street on roller skates the other day, and on bikes with her mom. We’ve had a couple of walks in the neighborhood again, instead of indoors…

Just heard on the radio that the snow last night was the first of 3 events. The final one is supposed to be “the big one” on Sunday.
So for now, I guess ALL the clothes is in circulation.
This how the snow shovel is still out on Memorial Day. Ach.

Of course this is a week where I wrote today’s blog a couple of days ago because I’m very busy and now there’s snow on the ground so let’s just pretend today that spring might be just around the corner!

No pretending needed. When I woke up this morning, the neighbor’s yard across the street was covered in snow. Now that south-facing front lawn has no trace of snow at al. The first dandelions can’t be that far off.

I actually grilled Monday night. You take days like that at this early juncture as a gift but without jumping to any conclusions.
I haven’t had to break out my big snowblower yet this year but Sunday may require it. I hope it starts. If it does I’ll clear the public sidewalk for my side of the block. Everyone is done with snow shoveling at this point.

I guess I’m pretty sanguine about this shoulder season. Lived in MN far too long to get my hopes up for an early Spring. I also don’t get my hopes up for an extended Winter most years either. I’ve experienced blizzards in October, April, and May. March blizzards are expected, and we usually get one, so they don’t count as anomalies. That May blizzard was followed a few days later by 100 degree temps down here.
Ahhh, Minnesota. Variable weather is your spice of life.

The overlap between the full-on seasons. March is part winter, part spring most years, so it’s not the main attraction (the head). But it’s close to each.the shoulder).

Rise and Shine, Baboons,
You are right on time, VS. Everyone at my house has Spring Fever, including McGee. Last night the little Dickens grabbed husband’s CPAP mask off the bed as I was assembling the device and he would not give it back, even with a treat offered. This morning he is again way too energetic. He is happiest hanging outside watching all the birds, new to his life. Squirrels are also quite a draw. He is fully recovered from his recent surgery and feels really good!
Yesterday husband was so grouchy that I assigned his caregiver to take him to the motorcycle shop in Shakopee to look at the motorcycles. That was his annual Rite of Spring at this time of year. They returned home saying it made him feel sad that he cannot ride anymore, but that he enjoyed looking at the bikes, for a win of 50%. While he was occupied there, I went to a knitting shop in St. Paul, took myself out to lunch, then went on to a shoe store where I bought a pair of shoes.
We got everyone through the day. Now on to today…
