Mood And Weather

Last Saturday was really rainy here. It seemed to rain all day. In ND, rain was a discrete event that only lasted for a little while until it stopped completely. Our rain Saturday seemed to last for hours.

Husband has been very anxious about the weather here, getting pretty worked up during snow/rain storms and wind. He just isn’t accustomed to the way it goes here. Our very active terriers were surprisingly sleepy all day on Saturday. I assumed this was due to the weather. Husband napped. I find the only weather that gets me real excited is snow storms. I love blizzards if I am home. I find it hard to sleep!

We usually had very low humidity most of the time in ND. Here it is so variable. I find my arthritis gets worse as the humidity and air pressure change. We all have a lot to get used to.

How does the weather impact you? What weather do you find exciting or distressing ? Post some weather music.

  1. Rise and shine baboons,
I am off for four days to a sunny place and I will return on Monday. My friend and I are going to Savannah Georgia for the hidden Gardens tour. There will be reports when I get back home.

  2. I’m like Renee – love to be inside during a snowstorm, as long as everything’s working properly. I’m not fond of the heat and humidity in August, when we finally do have to sometimes turn on the A/C. However, we do have a humidifier going when the cold winter hits and the air is so dry.

I’ve been noticing our gas flame on the stove being more orange than blue lately. After reading up on causes and solutions, one was that even the humidity in the air in your kitchen can affect the flame. I turned off the humidifier, and the next day the flame is back to blue. ! (I probably could have turned off the humidifier earlier this spring.)

  3. Unless something about the weather promises to be really extreme, I mostly just go about my daily routines. If extreme, I take whatever measures seem necessary.

    It’s weather. It just happens.

  4. I like blizzards too, from safely inside a warm house. Any major weather event is fascinating and awe-inspiring when experienced safely. Every big-ass storm of any kind reminds me that we are definitely not in charge of our planet. Mama Nature always has the final say.

The increasingly warmer winters depress the heck out of me. I LOVE winter, love playing in snow. So when winter is a wimp, I’m not happy. I also hate hot humid summer weather. But give me a crisp fall day with a breeze pushing a few stray clouds across the sky and I’m happy. Or a frosty morning after a good snowfall the night before and everything is as white as can be. So I guess the good weather days offset the depressing days. But I think the depressing days are gaining ground on the lovely days.

  5. I’m grateful that my psyche is only minimally affected by weather. I have known people who were almost incapacitated by darkness or lack of sunlight. Seasonal affective disorder is a thing.

I grew up in a place with a very moderate coastal climate, no extremely hot or cold weather. Lots of windy, overcast, grey, and rainy days, interspersed with warm, sunny days. I was twenty-six years old before I was ever exposed to enough heat and humidity to justify air-conditioning.

I love the changing seasons and all kinds of weather. From a gentle spring rain to a torrential downpour; from a a gentle breeze to spectacular thunderstorm and everything in between. I am grateful, though, to not live in an area where violent hurricanes and other natural catastrophes occur with some regularity.

Here’s my pick for a weather related song:

  6. I have a friend who has seasonal affective disorder so I’ve seen upfront what weather can do to mood. I don’t have anything of the kind that I’ve ever been able to track and really, the only time that the weather bugs me is if it’s keeping me from doing something. I’m not overly crazy about hot hot hot weather (which is why I moved here from St. Louis) but I think I cope pretty well.

  7. Now that I’m retired, I love a good winter snowstorm or blizzard, as long as I am at home and the power doesn’t go down.

I used to love thunderstorms too, but that ended in 2018 with the tornado that hit us in Northfield. I was really scared. I was in the “basement” (not a true basement) as soon as the sirens went off. I felt the low pressure as the tornado roared overhead. It made my ears pop, so I rubbed Pippin’s ears for him. There was a roaring sound and sensation, and I heard several hard crashes and thuds. I stayed in the basement, clinging to Pippin.

I finally texted a neighbor. She said she was outside, that it was over, and that I really should come outside and see. Many large trees were down, part of my next door neighbor’s roof had blown off and was on my deck. I had no other real damage, but it scared the bejeebers out of me.
