A World Gone Mad

Gravity, the 5-second rule, Murphys Law, chocolate is a food group, the toast will always land buttered-side down, oatmeal raisin cookies masquerading as chocolate chip cookies are sent by evil entities to usurp happiness.  These are givens.  In addition YA doesn’t like farm eggs and YA doesn’t like my recipe for deviled eggs.

Farm eggs.  I adore Ben’s farm eggs.  Rich, full flavor and then there are those deep golden yolks.  Bring them on!  Unfortunately YA isn’t always sure about “new” things and the farm eggs fall into this category.  She hasn’t said exactly but I think it’s the color of the yolks.

Deviled eggs.  While in theory YA likes deviled eggs, she doesn’t like my preferred recipe.  I’ve mentioned before that I am a Miracle Whip gal.  YA has grown up into a mayonnaise gal.  It I make the eggs with some Miracle Whip and some mayonnaise and give it a good dose of mustard, she will sometimes have one, but not always.

So after Ben delivered eggs on Sunday, I immediately boiled up a few and made deviled eggs.  When I asked YA if she was interested, she said no, so I made them my favorite way – Miracle Whip, mustard, pickle relish, salt, pepper.  And because they were farm eggs, they were stunning looking – more golden and orangish even than the header photo.  I ate some immediately, had some for breakfast on Monday (they were marvelous on toast with strawberry jam) and was looking forward to the last of the batch of breakfast yesterday.

Lo and behold – when I came downstairs, the container that had held the remaining four halves was empty and sitting in the sink.  SHE ATE MY DEVILED EGGS!  Even though I had made her least favorite version.

So now what?  I feel like I need to re-write all my life expectations.  What’s next… will the toast fall butter side up?

Any universal truths that have let you down?

  1. If Jane Austen was here today and had a look at our society’s crop of billionaires, she’d change her “truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” Her heroines would want nothing to do with our rich jerks and misfits.

  2. OT from Tuesday- Husband and I took the mattress and box spring out to the curb yesterday so the city could haul it away tomorrow. Late yesterday afternoon I saw that two young women had stopped in their car and were carefully looking the mattress over. I told them it was theirs if they wanted it, and that it was very clean. One of the women said she needed it for her daughter. They hauled them back onto the driveway “so no one else would take them” and left to go get a vehicle to transport the them. I am so happy that someone could use them.

    1. This is what living on my street is like. It’s actually a county road with a lot of traffic and there’s next to nothing that I have ever put out that hasn’t been taken before the trash people come to get it.

  3. That’s how they do “clean-up days” in a lot of small towns. Mankato and North Mankato plan for lots of cars driving up and down the residential streets, stopping, and taking things that have been left on the curb. They keep it to one day per year, which (mostly) eliminates people leaving things on the curb for weeks at a time waiting for someone to want their garbage. It’s a pretty good deal for people in need!

  4. I was told that there is someone waiting for everyone, and eventually he’d come along. Apparently this is one of those universal truths. Yeah. It’s a really good thing I like my solo living style, except for some occasional inconveniences,

  5. Update on the deviled egg situation. Last night I said to YA that she had eaten my deviled eggs and how surprised I was. She replied that these were the best I had ever made and could I please make more today using the exact same recipe. Good grief, my world is turned upside down.

  6. Rise and Shine, Baboons,

    Universal truths letting me down:

    * You will get over grief and loss–I have missed my father every day since he became ill. It has not stopped me from living my life, but I miss him.

    * The GOP will monitor itself and make sure fringe elements do not take over. (Someone said this to me). Ahem

    * Religion will teach moral values. Sometimes this is an outright lie. It could if not perverted by personal interests and needs, but I think not. Right now parts of religions teach cruelty and bigotry.

I will think of more throughout the day.

Clyde, best wishes for your new home. It sounds great.

    1. Which, as I recall, was the day VS got her name. Dale was writing some “Verily” stuff, and I realized it rhymed with Sherilee and she claimed it as her own!
