It’s been a few years since YA and I traveled together. This is a four-day weekend trip that we’ve talked about for a few years now. Here are some interesting facts about our location:
- Nearly half the residents of the US live near here
- The gate to hell is hiding underneath North Street
- Part of the Berlin Wall can be found here
- Woody Harrelson was arrested in this city in 1982 before hitting it big in Hollywood
- The Anthony Thomas Company makes 50,000 pounds of chocolate here daily, including their famous candy named after a state tree
- The NFL was headquartered here from 1927 until 1938
- Jack Hanna is Director Emeritus to one of the largest attractions of its kind in North America here.
Where in the world are we? (Bonus points if you can say WHY we’re here!)
Boston for World Cup?

I am with Wes–Columbus, ohio. Are you getting chocolate? Adopting a dog?

There will probably be chocolate because how can I go four days without chocolate. But we are not coming home from Columbus with a dog.

Chocolate has been procured. There was an Anthony Thomas shop three minutes from the Indian Falls hike that we took after lunch. We did get a box of buckeyes and a few other assorted chocolates.

I know this is 100% wrong, but I’m going to guess Milwaukee, WI.
Just because.

I’m wondering what is meant by “near here”, that nearly half of the US residents could live near there…
I’m gonna guess Chicago, kind of like mig, just because.

Are the chocolates Buckeyes? The name Jack Hanna is tickling something in my brain, but can’t think what.

Jack Hanna is the Director Emeritus of the Columbus Zoo. He followed in the footsteps of Marlin Perkins of Wild Kingdom fame and was very prolific on the talk show circuit bringing animals with him. While he never actually starred in or hosted Wild Kingdom in later years he did tour for Mutual of Omaha who was the sponsor of Wild Kingdom. I have two friends who used to work for Mutual of Omaha and they’ve met him because of that.

I think Wes is probably right, but I have no idea why you’re there.

It’s all about animals this weekend. Wes had half of it when he said the zoo. If anybody here has ever watched Secrets of the Zoo, maybe you can guess the second half? Keep in mind that YA and I have seen every episode of Secrets of the Zoo at least five times.

The elephants are great.
My daughter and I were there in early May. The black bear cubs were very entertaining. Many areas are under remodeling.

The cheeta run was canceled because of torrential rain the day before.

Husband’s people are from Ohio, mainly Eastern and Southern Ohio like Canton and Chillicothe. They were originally coal miners. They loved cornbread, cornmeal mush, kind of hill people food. They talk funny. I have a first cousin, named Wes, who lives in Columbus and who was a librarian and document preservationist at Ohio State. Husband’s dad was an OSU graduate.

The brilliant James Thurber was born and raised in Columbus. “My Life and Hard Times” never fails to get me laughing. One of the homes he lived in is now a museum and literary center. The house is the setting for one of my favorite chapters from MLAHT, “The Night the Ghost Got In.”
